Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston in 1706 and ended his formal schooling at age 10. He went on to write for his brother's newspaper and publish Poor Richard's Almanack. As one of America's most famous Enlightenment thinkers, Franklin was also a prolific inventor who helped shape the modern world and grew increasingly involved in politics from the 1750s onward, founding the Pennsylvania Academy, which later became the University of Pennsylvania. An interesting fact is that Franklin first proposed the idea of daylight saving time in 1784.
