Olaudah Equiano was taken into slavery at age 11 and suffered through the brutal Middle Passage while being transported on the Atlantic slave trade. He had a long life as a slave but became very interested in personal freedom and democracy due to his involvement in the anti-slavery movement. He authored an influential book detailing his experiences as a slave called The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano.
