This document discusses regulations under MARPOL Annex VI to reduce air pollution from ships. The 2020 regulation will reduce the allowed sulfur content in marine fuel from 3.5% to 0.5% globally. Ships will need to switch to lower sulfur fuel, install exhaust gas scrubbers, or use alternative fuels like LNG to comply. The regulation aims to improve health and environment by reducing sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions. Enforcement will be conducted by port states through inspections and monitoring fuel sulfur content. Compliant fuel will be available at major ports. The shipping industry also aims to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutral shipping by 2050.
