Indigo provides off-grid solar power to the 1.6 billion people worldwide without electricity through an innovative pay-as-you-go business model. Customers can purchase solar energy credits via SMS that provide lighting and phone charging for a set period of time, saving 50% or more over traditional energy spending. Indigo has already deployed 200 systems across 4 countries in early 2011 and plans to deploy 4000 more systems across Africa in 2012. The company's vision is to energize rural homes affordably without grid connections through distributed, low-power solar solutions.
"Say goodbye to halogen bulbs commonly used in desk lamps and appliances with one simple step. DirectLED HL replaces these hot running halogen lamps with an efficient 1.2 watt LED light source. After installing a DirectLED HL your lamp will no longer run dangerously hot or emit potentially harmful UV radiation like your current halogen lamp does. Traditional halogens also need to be handled properly or they can explode. Best of all, the DirectLED HL is super efficient and costs pennies to run per year. Since its an EarthLED it will also last over 50,000 hours meaning you’ll have to buy 16 halogen bulbs over the same amount of time that your DirectLED HL will last.
Includes information about Borealis B10s such as spec sheets, comparisons, energy audits showing cost and energy savings. Other information about Borealis LED products

Cambridge | Jan-14 | Distributed Energy for Rural Africa: Azuri's IndoGo sola...Smart Villages
Presentation by Simon Bransfield-Garth, Azuri Technologies, Smart Villages Technology Workshop, Cambridge 14 January 2014
The purpose of the workshop was to bring together leading UK researchers to discuss emerging technologies for the sustainable production and use of energy in rural communities in developing countries, and to take a ‘look ahead’ at scientific developments and technologies that might be influential over the next 10 - 20 years. It was held under the auspices of the ‘smart villages’ initiative, a three - year project to advance sustain able energy provision for development in off - grid villages in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Arusha | Jun-14 | Azuri PayGo Solar Smarter Solar Power for the Emerging WorldSmart Villages
The workshop in Arusha explored the East African/Tanzanian environment for village energy, local case studies, challenges and opportunities, with a view to formulating policy recommendations for policymakers, funders, NGOs and other stakeholders the region. An important part of the workshop, and indeed the whole Smart Villages initiative work programme, was to gather evidence from existing projects that have provided or facilitated sustainable off-grid energy solutions in the developing world. The workshop gathered more than 50 experts, including policymakers, NGOs, off-grid energy entrepreneurs and others to look for solutions to providing energy to villages off the grid.

The imminent arrival of Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) in Africa will have a significant impact on the drive for greater electrification in rural areas.
The migration from analogue to 2nd generation of digital television broadcasting DVB-T2 is about to take place across the continent of Africa.
There is a groundswell of interest in DTT as it will offer viewers substantially more terrestrial television channels than are currently available. The technology will help improve the picture and sound quality of broadcast programmes and also give viewers access to radio and a host of other value-add services.
However, the major problem facing countries throughout Africa is the limited availability of electricity in remote settlements.
The only viable option for rural households is renewable energy with new-generation, low-cost hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) solutions being the preferred choice.
After adopting solar systems there is a dramatic change in customer behaviour and expectations. African want more than just lights.
