We’ve all heard that protecting skin from the sun will help prevent it from aging. But if you’re already older, is there any point to worrying about sun damage? Since the skin becomes more delicate and vulnerable as we age, that means that it’s more important than ever for older adults to protect their skin from damage caused by the sun. Older adults need to take special precautions to limit their sun exposure as much as possible.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease — is a disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and affect muscle movement. The ongoing damage from ALS causes motor neurons to die. When this occurs, the brain can no longer start or control muscle movement. This eventually can lead to paralysis.

Adam Ernst will speak about how the decision was made to switch to native code and how the company prepared to rewrite the app. He will share an inside look at the APIs and technical architecture Facebook uses to enable dozens of iOS developers to work on the same application. Automated testing is very important to Facebook, so Adam will also speak about how Facebook uses testing on iOS to keep the app reliable.
Are You Prepared? Winter Storms & Extreme Coldntoscano50
While the amount of danger from winter weather varies across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of
where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Winter storms
can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for
several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong
winds, ice, sleet and freezing rain.

Hurricanes are capable of producing winds in excess of 155 miles per hour and causing catastrophic damage to coastlines and several hundred miles inland. Additionally, hurricanes can also lead to storm surges along the coast and cause extensive damage from heavy rainfall.
All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes. Parts of the Southwest United States and the Pacific Coast also experience heavy rains and floods each year from hurricanes spawned off Mexico. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15 and ends November 30.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Ready to Weather the Storm? Severe Weather Infographic
1. READY to
WEATHER the STORM?
Severe weather impacts every part of the U.S., whether it’s a winter storm, tornado,
hurricane or wildfire. Everyone should take the necessary steps to prepare for these potentially dangerous
situations, so we compiled a few tips to help you stay safe during and after nature’s most hazardous weather patterns. Keep yourself updated on how to survive any storm, so that you and your family can be your own
force of nature.
Lightning
WINTER STORMS
The snowiest city in the U.S. is
Syracuse, N.Y., which averages
128 inches of snow yearly.
Lightning can heat the surrounding
air up to 50,0000 F, which is
five times hotter than the sun.
• Keep Watch for Hypothermia:
Seek medical attention if anyone
exhibits warning signs, like uncontrollable shivering, disorientation or slurred speech.
• Remember the 30/30 Rule:
Head indoors if you can’t
count to 30 between seeing
lightning and hearing thunder.
Wait 30 minutes after the
storm before leaving
your shelter.
• Build a Snow Fort: If you’re stranded outdoors
during a storm, build a fort. The snow can act
as insulation from wind and freezing temperatures.
• Avoid Concrete Surfaces:
Concrete walls and floors,
like those found in
basements, conduct
electricity.
Wildfires
More than 100,000 wildfires occur in the
U.S. each year, destroying up to 5 million
acres of land.
• Strategically Place Lawn Sprinklers: Keep
them near any above-ground fuel tanks and
leave them on during a wildfire to douse
the structure.
TORNADOES
Each year, about 1,200 tornadoes
strike the U.S. While they can last
longer than an hour, most last less
than 10 minutes.
• Know the Tornado Warning Signs:
Seek shelter if you see a greenish sky, large
hail, a low-hanging, rotating cloud or hear
a loud roar like a train.
• Cover Your Vents: Keep
vents covered with mesh
to prevent sparks and
embers from entering
your home.
• Avoid the Tornado’s Path: If you’re trapped
in a car and see a tornado, drive out of its
path by moving at right angles.
EXTREME HEAT
The worst heat wave occurred
in the summer of 1980, when
more than 1,250 people died
in the U.S.
Hurricanes
Hurricanes can pack wind speeds of more
than 160 mph and can unleash more than
2.4 trillion gallons of rain a day.
• Have Plenty of Water Supplies: Fill all empty containers
with drinking water. Fill sinks and bathtubs to provide an
extra supply for washing.
• Use Plywood to Reinforce Windows: Tape does not
protect windows from flying debris. It might keep more
• of the glass together when impacted, but it will not keep
it in place.
BE PREPARED
• Take a Cool Shower: Fans
do not prevent heat-related illnesses when the temperature
is in the high 90s.
• Eat Lightly: Avoid hot foods
and heavy meals, as they only
add heat to your body.
• Keep Watch for Heat Stroke:
Seek medical attention if
anyone exhibits warning signs
– like extremely high body
temperature, red/hot/dry skin,
nausea or a rapid,
strong pulse.
Before the Storm Hits
Prior to any storm, ensure your family has practiced an
emergency evacuation plan and has emergency kits in your
home and cars. Keeping the kit fresh is a great way to be
prepared for nature’s severe weather. Include items like:
• First-aid supplies
• Food and water
