Seven Questions Part 5

  • 1. 5)How did you attract and address your audience?
  • 2.  Sound Codes Used: -Speech :(Informal, varied tone of voice) -Music :(suitable music used for each news story. No music used, to show seriousness, no speech just background music)  The Presenters: -Variety of presenters. Interactivity: -Teenagers. -Facebook page -Use colloquial speech. -survey monkey -Interact with each other.
  • 3. New Stories The News Stories 1)What sixteen year olds do after leaving school.(Interview) -News Values: Human interest, Local interest. 2)Death of school teacher. (Interview) -News Values: :Human interest, Local interest, Negativity. 3) Film Releases. (Outside Broadcast) -News Values: Celebrity, Simplicity. 4) Chris Brown and Rihanna. (Voxpop) -News Values: Celebrity, Simplicity, Continuity.

Editor's Notes

  1. Speech- Our presenters used informal language so that our target audience, which are teenagers and people in their 20s, would feel comfortable because we are using their style of speech. This will increase the ability to engage our audiences and prevent them from getting bored. Despite not using formal language, we have relied on a varied use of tone of voice to clearly distinguish the more serious news stories from the less serious ones.In the beginning of our newscast we used an exciting tone of voice to create a fun atmosphere and immediately grab the attention of our audiences, which contrasts with the more serious tone of voice during the news regarding the death of a school teacher. We removed the dialogue at the end of our newscast for impact as an element of surprise. We wanted the audience to be tricked into thinking that the newscast was over so that they would be surprised when we shouted “Be there…!!” at the end, this was our attempt to leave a strong impression on our audience and increase the chances of them listening to our radio again the next day.Music- we used different music extracts for different news stories in order to match the atmosphere of that particular news story. For example the news story regarding new cinema releases , had a dramatic film-like background music. While the background music for the Chris Brown news was hip-hop beats which had a very street-like feel, which is used as a reference to Chris brown’s type of music and matches well with the image of our radio and the musical interests of our audience. In some news stories we found that using no background music would be the best way to immediately indicate to our audience that the topic of a news story is serious and important, regardless of the informal language used. For example the news story regarding the school teachers death. We made all of our presenters teenagers aged from 17 to 18 to make it more appealing to our teenage audience and allow them to relate better to our newscast. We also made our presenters interact with each other to reinforce the fun and exciting atmosphere of our newscast. We made our newscast interactive by allowing our audience to share their views on our official facebook page where we provide them with extra information that was not broadcasted and on our surveys in the survymonkey website.
  2. News storyThe first story was an Interview with a careers adviser from our school, We chose her because she is familiar with the issue regarding what students do after leaving school so she knows useful and up-to-date information about this issue which adds credibility to our radio since this allows our audience to trust that the information we are providing them, is correct since we have interviewed someone who is relevant. Our target audience would be interested in this story because their age range includes students aged 16 which are likely to be experiencing doubts and concerns regarding this issue so its highly possible that they will be able to find this information useful. It is also the longest news story because it contains important content which cannot be shortened. The second story starts off as a negative news story because it involves a person’s death, this would have human interest because it is a sad incident which could create sympathy from our audience, Our audience could relate to this because they are mostly students who spent a lot of time with their teachers in classrooms and have most likely been to many trips before. The second part of this story includes an interview with a student who has attended a performance of her teachers at her school. We have chosen to interview her because she has personally experienced how the school has changed the ways of celebrating the end of term so her opinion is relevant and most importantly she is also within the age range of our target audience, which allows our audience to make an assumption that her opinion on the show is reliable since people of similar ages are more likely to have similar interests. Our last two stories are focused on film and music, both of this topics are things that our target audience would be interested in hearing about because they are forms of relieving stress from exams and having fun in their free time. We used outside broadcasting for the cinema news because we wanted a spontaneous response from someone who has just watched a movie so their opinions on the film would be fresh and would most likely reflect their honest views on the film. This would allow our audience to trust that there is no social desirability involved in the person’s response to the film. The Chris brown news was placed last because this news isn’t completely recent and it’s not as important as the new film releases.
