Sets
• A set is a well-defined collection of distinct
objects, considered as an object in its own
right.
• Developed at the end of the 19th century, set
theory is now a ubiquitous part of
mathematics, and can be used as a foundation
from which nearly all of mathematics can be
derived.
Georg Cantor
• German mathematician.
• Created set theory - a fundamental theory in
mathematics.
• One-to-one correspondence between the
members of two sets, infinite and well-
ordered sets
• Proved that the real numbers are more
numerous than the natural numbers.
• He defined the cardinal and ordinal numbers
and their arithmetic.
Few Collections
(i) Odd natural numbers less than 10, i.e., 1, 3, 5, 7, 9
(ii) The rivers of India
(iii) The vowels in the English alphabet, a, e, i, o, u
(iv) Various kinds of triangles
(v) Prime factors of 210, namely, 2,3,5 and 7
(vi) The solution of the equation: x2 – 5x + 6 = 0
2 and 3.
N : the set of all natural numbers
Z : the set of all integers
Q : the set of all rational numbers
R : the set of real numbers
Z+ : the set of positive integers
Q+ : the set of positive rational numbers, and
R+ : the set of positive real numbers.
Two methods of representing a set
(i) Roster or tabular form
(ii) Set-builder form.
Roster form
• The set of all natural numbers which divide 42
is {1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42}.
• The set of all vowels in the English alphabet is
{a, e, i, o, u}.
• The set of odd natural numbers is represented
by {1, 3, 5, . . .}.
• The dots tell us that the list of odd numbers
continue indefinitely.
Set-builder form
• V = {x : x is a vowel in English alphabet}
• A = {x : x is a natural number and 3 < x < 10}
Empty set
• A set which does not contain any element is
called the empty set or the null set or the void
set.
• Let A = {x : 1 < x < 2, x is a natural number}.
Then A is the empty set,
because there is no natural number between
1 and 2.
Finite/Infinite sets
• A set which is empty or consists of a definite
number of elements is called finite otherwise,
the set is called infinite.
• Ex:
– Let W be the set of the days of the week. Then W
is finite.
– Let G be the set of points on a line. Then G is
infinite.
Equal/Unequal set
• Two sets A and B are said to be equal if they have
exactly the same elements and we write A = B.
Otherwise, the sets are said to be unequal and
we write A ≠ B.
• Ex:
– Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4} and B = {3, 1, 4, 2}. Then A = B.
– Let A be the set of prime numbers less than 6 and P
the set of prime factors of 30. Then A and P are equal,
since 2, 3 and 5 are the only prime factors of 30 and
also these are less than 6.
Subset
• A set A is said to be a subset of a set B if every
element of A is also an element of B.
• “A is a subset of B if a is an element of A
implies that a is also an element of B”
Superset/Singleton set
Intervals
• The set of real numbers
• { y : a < y < b} is called an open interval and is
denoted by (a, b).
• The interval which contains the end points
also is called closed interval and is denoted by
[ a, b ].
Universal set
• While studying the system of numbers, we are
interested in the set of natural numbers and
its subsets such as the set of all prime
numbers, the set of all even numbers, and so
forth.
• The universal set is usually denoted by U, and
all its subsets by the letters A, B, C, etc.
Venn diagram
• Venn diagrams are named after the English
logician, John Venn (1834-1883).
Union of sets
• Let A and B be any two sets. The union of A
and B is the set which consists of all the
elements of A and all the elements of B, the
common elements being taken only once.
• The symbol ‘U’ is used to denote the union.
Symbolically, we
• write A U B and usually read as ‘A union B’.
Intersection of sets
• The intersection of sets A and B is the set of all
elements which are common to both A and B.
Difference of sets
• The difference of the sets A and B in this order
is the set of elements which belong to A but
not to B. Symbolically, we write A – B and read
as “ A minus B”.
Complement sets – DeMorgan’s Law
• The complement of the union of two sets is the
intersection of their complements and the
complement of the intersection of two sets is
the union of their complements.
