From Social Media To Human Media - critical reflection on social media & some...Niels Hendriks
Â
This is a presentation by Liesbeth Huybrechts & Niels Hendriks given at the Glocal Conference in Macedonia in 2009. It makes a critical reflection on so-called social media and presents some design methods and projects dealing with social environments.
How to crowd-produce the public space? How can we conceive new models for social networks?
Those slides are from a presentation I gave for the launch event of the Creative Exchange, a UK program involving academics and companies.
http://thecreativeexchange.org
We are creating a new kind of reality, one in which physical and digital environments, media, and
interactions are woven together throughout our daily lives. In this world, the virtual and the physical
are seamlessly integrated. Cyberspace is not a destination; rather, it is a layer tightly integrated
into the world around us.

Wearable Technology - Learning, Connecting, Monitoring and Posing Seymourpowell
Â
Probably the most discussed technological advancements since the iPhone was introduced, wearable technology embodies the unavoidable and fascinating era of enmeshing computers and advanced electronic technologies onto our selves â through accessories and clothing. In sci-fi speak â it is the biological integration of electromechanical elements for the benefit of the human self. Cyborgs, then.
In this article I will explore four key questions with wearables â
Will wearable technology make us more skilful?
Will it make us more connected?
Will it make us healthier?
Will it be stylish?
In each, I will strive to understand the potential and concern for technology in these areas and explore how effective this tech is at replacing something inferior, or not.

The social Web is changing how we connect and collaborate, but it's not all about tools and technology. What are the human needs driving this transformation, and how can we make online choices that will most benefit our life communities: personal, professional, and civic?

A playful stroll thru heuristic fields of thought & feeling, focused upon opportunities for Foreign Language Learning Pedagogy to be transformed by New Media (Lev Manovich), NeuroCinematics, WeChat/WhatsApp, English Corners, right-brained learning/acquisition. Wikinomics and the practices of mass collaboration can be used by language learners for income generation--by doing audio editing of their target language to expandtheir level of i+1 (Krashen's concept of expanding one's level of comprehension of the target language input),by using repetition of audio segments (speeches/film dialogues/songs/etc.), silence, background music, slowing the speed of speech (but not the frequency). Such income-generating mass collaboration projects can benefit economically-challenged individuals/schools/NGOs/etc.

Reproducible research for an irreproducible planet.
Earth sciences are driven by analysing data from our sole experiment - planet Earth. As a result, many data collections are unique: megathrust earthquakes happen rarely, ongoing anthropogenic warming has no precedent. Moreover, innovative insights often take place at the transition between sub-disciplines and require objective data-informed communication across disciplines. Finally, communicating uncertainties is vital not only for basic sciences, but also regarding risk aversion and policy: As societies become ever more complex and interconnected with intricate, multi-scale problems (climate, energy, water, drought, long/short term hazards) that are difficult to disentangle for any individual, it is indispensable to create workflows which can be accessed, re-run, and presented in a clear manner. We should thus move the scientific workflow of collecting, cleaning, documenting and sharing data and methods, quantifying uncertainties and interpreting results towards a completely reproducible framework.
In seismology, we enjoy several open, global, sharing endeavours with massive success. I will present excerpts of such research projects, also linking seismology with mathematics, supercomputing, psychology, and zoology. I argue that an open culture facilitated by a reproducible mindset will elevate scientific progress, depreciate subjective bias and create an environment beyond monolithic research judgment.

Sidekick Solutions uses Bonterra Impact Management (fka Social Solutions Apricot) and automation solutions to integrate data for business workflows.
We believe integration and automation are essential to user experience and the promise of efficient work through technology. Automation is the critical ingredient to realizing that full vision. We develop integration products and services for Bonterra Case Management software to support the deployment of automations for a variety of use cases.
This video focuses on the notifications, alerts, and approval requests using Slack for Bonterra Impact Management. The solutions covered in this webinar can also be deployed for Microsoft Teams.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Â
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as âpredictable inferenceâ.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
Â
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more âmechanicalâ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
