Calendar This is an AP class, with an exam at the beginning of May, so we focus on the bulk of the course Fall Semester We will start working on the SGP Spring Semester Many of you already have rough drafts of your research paper.  If you don’t, don’t worry! The rough draft with interview notes is not due until 27 March. All you need to have between now and Spring Semester is the idea of what topic you want to do. You may, if you want, choose a topic different than what you wrote your 11 th  grade paper on.  However , please be aware that you are then  choosing  to write another 8-10 page paper, with all the requirements.
The General Requirements 8-10 page research paper On a controversy 5-6 webpage/article sources 2 book sources You will also add the information you got from your Shadowing Interview MLA formatted, properly cited Shadowing Product: You will create something. You will also create a portfolio that catalogs your work. Presentation: You will present your product to a panel
Your paper must revolve around a controversy. NOT PAPER TOPICS Game Warden Contracting Computer technology Restaurant business Pharmaceuticals Good Paper Topics Whether or not hunting out of season should be allowed How to convert your yard to include “green” ideas: rain gardens, water conservation How social media affects people’s lives Designing a business plan, layout, menu, design for a restaurant Are modern people over medicated? Surveys, research, anecdotals
Shadowing Ms. Rankin will arrange your shadowing. She will try to get it as close to your topic as possible. You will interview who you shadow AND put this information into your research paper: 15 open ended questions that enhance the research you have already completed and signed off on by your Advisor before you conduct your interview Typed transcript of the interview with the questions and answers identified Signature on typed transcript of person interviewed
Product:  A product cannot be created in the weeks before the due date, it needs to be a reflection of months of work.   Good Products Models Costumes or fashion designs Musical or dance performances  Website creation Drafting products Unacceptable Products Simple PowerPoints Scrapbooks Poster boards
Portfolio 1” binder with a clear front, and a professional decorated cover. Include a title page Include a Table of Contents A current resume Include your proposal Include a final draft of your research paper as well as supplemental materials: Typed interview questions and answers Transcript with signature of interviewee Include service learning hour log Include Verification form for service learning Include visual evidence of volunteering with typed captions Include your Advisor contract, as well as your log for time Include your parent consent form If appropriate, include copies of materials associated with product. If not, include visual evidence of product in progress A journal that reflects on the process and covers the entire timeline of the project
Presentation Be a speech of 8-10 minutes practiced in front of  the advisor before the final presentation in front of the school graduation board (your teacher, your advisor, your guidance counselor, an administrator) The presentation  SHOULD NOT  be you reading your paper, or written notes Speech should include the following: community service and research overview, lessons learned, experiences and insights, and references to portfolio Each student is required to have an audio-visual component in his/her presentation The student should introduce himself/herself to the panelists. The student should remember that this is a formal presentation. Dress appropriately. Consult a teacher, academic advisor, mentor, or presentation rubric to ensure appropriate selection of attire.
