- To learn the names of fruit items: pear, apple, strawberry, orange and
plum
Learning focus:
The activities will focus on:
- Vocabulary: caterpillar, apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges;
- Numbers: one, two three, four, five;
Integration of skills:
They will develop their:
- Speaking skills by asking and answering questions;
- Listening skills: listening to the story, following instructions and asking
and answering questions (eg: - “How many?”, - “Two pears”);

- Logical- Mathematical intelligence by counting the fruit item as and
matching them with the corresponding number.

Possible contingencies:
- Children talking at the same time when teacher asks questions.
Strategy: teacher encouraging children to sing the silence song.
- Youngest children (2 and 3 years old) getting distracted. Strategy:
teacher approaching children and praising their work.
- Children being shy and getting difficulties to speak. Strategy: teacher
encouraging children to repeat.
- Children not knowing what to do. Strategy: teacher explaining and
demonstrating the activity as many times as necessary.
Classroom management strategies:
- Start each activity explaining what it is, using the following pattern:
L2+L1+L2;
- Use mimes and gestures to help children understand;

Lesson stages:
Routine:
- Starting the lesson with the “Hello Song”: Children stand in a circle and
sing the song along while they do what the song says: hello friends
(they wave their hands), greet your neighbour (they greet their partner),
jump and turn around.
Lead-in presentation
Purpose:
- To introduce the numbers and fruit items of the story “The very Hungry
Caterpillar” since I am going to tell this story the next class
Timing: 10 minutes
Activity description and instructions as they will be said to
students (include direct speech)
- Tell children we are going to learn some numbers.
- Say the numbers out loud, while showing the number images, and elicit
repetition.
- Tell children we are going to learn some fruit items.

- Count the number of fruit items in the food images in a loud voice, and
elicit repetition.
Scaffolding strategies
- Make sure they have understood what to do by asking questions in L1 if
necessary.
- Encourage them to speak English by praising them every time they say
anything in English with different comments like: Excellent! Very Good!

- If children use L1, respond in English.
- Use mimes, gestures and pictures for them to understand the story.
- Use the following pattern: L2+L1+L2, when it is necessary.

Development of the sequence of activities
Activity: Comprehension
Purpose:
- To consolidate vocabulary by doing a matching activity ( 2/3-year-old
children).
- To develop fine-motor skills by following a line( 2/3-year-old children).
- To check comprehension of vocabulary by ticking the right box ( 4/5-
year-old children)
Timing: 10 minutes
Activity description and instructions are they will be said to

- Divide children by ages since they will do different activities.
Two/three-year-olds:
- The youngest children will do the following activity:

- Show them the sheet and tell them they have to follow the line, using their
pencils, to link the number with the fruit item.
-Give them the worksheet and explain what they have to do;

Four/five-year-olds:
- Show them the following sheet:

- Demonstrate the activity: tell them they they have to tick the
corresponding box, using their pencils.
- Ask them if they understand and check it by asking what they have to
do.
- When they are ready they have to say what they did. Students say
phrases like “ one apple”, “two pears”, “three plums”, “ four
strawberries”, “ Five oranges”.

- Sing the goodbye song together with the children.
