• The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
(or Global Goals for Sustainable Development)
are a collection of 17 global goals set by the
United Nations General Assembly.
• The goals are broad and interdependent, yet
each has a separate list of targets to achieve.
Achieving all targets would signal
accomplishing all 17 goals. The SDGs cover
social and economic development issues.

more on our oceans than we can imagine.
• Over three billion people depend on marine

at USD 3 trillion per year or close to 5% of
global GDP.
• Oceans contain more than 200,000 identified
species, but actual numbers may lie in the
millions. It is estimated that 91% of ocean
species have yet to be classified, and that 95%

• Marine pollution, an overwhelming majority of
which comes from land-based sources, is
reaching alarming levels, with an average of
13,000 pieces of plastic litter to be found on
every square kilometre of ocean.

11. • OCEAN ACIDIFICATION
• Oceans also absorb about 30 percent of the
carbon dioxide produced by humans, and we
are seeing a 26 percent rise in ocean
acidification since the beginning of the
industrial revolution.

• Over three billion people depend on marine
and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.
However, today we are seeing 30 percent of
the world’s fish stocks overexploited, reaching
below the level at which they can produce
sustainable yields.
