This document provides an outline and overview of the concept of sustainable development. It discusses how sustainable development first emerged in international reports in the 1980s focusing on balancing environmental protection and economic development. The document then defines development and sustainable development, describing it as meeting current needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It outlines the evolution of sustainable development through key conferences and frameworks. Finally, it discusses the three pillars of sustainable development as environmental protection, economic development, and social development with some adding a fourth pillar of cultural diversity.

Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment.
Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the Statement of principles for the Sustainable Management of Forests were adopted by more than 178 Governments at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3 to 14 June 1992.
Main messages It is 20 years since the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), Our Common Future, emphasized the need for a sustainable way of life which not only addresses current environmental challenges but also ensures a secure society well into the future. This chapter analyses the evolution of such ideas as well as global trends in relation to environment and socio-economic development.
The following are its main messages: The world has changed radically since 1987 – socially, economically and environmentally. Global population has grown by more than 1.7 billion, from about 5 billion people. The global economy has expanded and is now characterized by increasing globalization. Worldwide, GDP per capita (purchasing power parity) has increased from US$5 927 in 1987 to US$8 162 in 2004. However, growth has been distributed unequally between regions. Global trade has increased during the past 20 years, fuelled by globalization, better communication, and low transportation costs.
Technology has also changed. Communications have been revolutionized with the growth of telecommunications and the Internet. Worldwide, mobile phone subscribers increased from 2 people per 1 000 in 1990 to 220 per 1 000 in 2003. Internet use increased from 1 person per 1 000 in 1990 to 114 per 1 000 in 2003. Finally, political changes have also been extensive. Human population and economic growth has increased demand on resources. The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) recognized 20 years ago that the environment, economic and social issues are interlinked. It recommended that the three be integrated into development decision making.
In defining sustainable development, the Commission acknowledged the need for both intra- and intergenerational equity – development that meets not only today’s human needs but also those of more people in the future. Changing drivers, such as population growth, economic activities and consumption patterns, have placed increasing pressure on the environment. Serious and persistent barriers to sustainable development remain. In the past 20 years, there has been limited integration of environment into development decision making.
Environmental degradation is therefore undermining development and threatens future development progress. Development is a process that enables people to better their well-being. Long-term development can only be achieved through sustainable management of various assets: financial, material, human, social and natural. Natural assets, including water, soils, plants and animals, underpin people’s livelihoods. Environmental degradation also threatens all aspects of human well-being. Environmental degradation has been demonstrably linked to human health problems, including some types of cancers, vector-borne diseases, emerging animal to human disease transfer, nutritional deficits and respiratory illnesses.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

OUTLINE
3. The term “sustainable development” first came
to prominence in the world conservation
strategy (WCS) in 1980.
It achieved a new status with the publication of
two significant reports by brundtanld on : North
and South : a programme for survival and
common crises 1985 and
Our common future ( 1985) and had gained
even greater attention since the United Nations
conference on environment and development
(UNCED) held in Rio de Jenerio in June 1992.
4. WHAT IS DEVELOPMENT?
Generally development is the gradual growth of a
situation that becomes more advanced and strong
than previous one .
Development is intended to bring a promise a positive
change for human being and it’s surrounding.
Development may take place by bringing about a
change in policy , projects and legislation.
Development is a unfolding of human potential for
meaningful participation in economic, social, political
and cultural process and institutions, so that people
can improve their conditions.
5. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs .
Gro Harlem Brundtland first introduced the
concept of Sustainable development in 1987 .
He was the Prime minister of Norway and
Chairman of the World Commission on
Environment and Development.
9. Evolution of SD concept: RIO TO
JOHANNESBURG
The landmark event in the evolution of the concept of sustainable development had been the
1972 Stockholm conference on the human environment convened by the United Nations, the
reports of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED).
Our common future and the 1992 united nations conference on environment and development
(UNCED) or Rio earth summit as it is commonly referred to . The main activities between
successive landmark events sought to build on the outcome of the previous event ,to clarify
issues, and to provide inputs itni the mandatory process.
10. The UN established the commission on sustainable development
(CSD) In DECEMBER 1992 to ensure an effective follow up of UNCED
and to monitor and report on the implementation of the earth summit
agreement at the local , national , regional, and international levels
A (Rio+5) special session of the General Assembly, held in June 1997
, adopted a comprehensive programe of the CSD fir 1997 of agenda
21 as well as the work programme of the CSD fir 1997-2002.
The Kyoto Protocol adopted in December 1997 and the conference of
the parties (COPs) , held over the years , have made some advance
relating to clarification of various aspects of financing and
implementation sustainable development globally.
19. SOLAR ENERGY =The greatest advantage of solar energy are that it’s completely free and
is available in a limitless supply. Both of these factors provide a huge benefits to
consumers and help reduce pollution. Replacing non- renewable energy with this type of
energy is both environmentally and financially effective.
20. Wind energy is another readily available wind energy source . Harnessing is
the power of wind energy necessitates the use of windmills; however,
21. Due to construction cost and finding a suitable location, this kind of energy is meant
to service more than just the individual . Wind energy can supplement or even replace
the cost of grid power ,and therefore may be a good investment and remains a great
example of sustainable development.
22. CROP ROTATION =This farming practice is beneficial in several ways ,
most notably because it is chemical- free . Crop rotation has been
proven to maximize the growth potential of land , while also
preventing disease and insects in the soil . Not only can this form of
development benefits commercial farmers , but it can also aid those
who garden at home .
23. Efficient water fixtures. According to the EPA , it takes a lot of
energy to produce and transport water and to process waste water ,
and since than one percent of the earth’s available water supply is
fresh water , it is important that Sustainable water use is employed
at the individual and societal level .
24. GREEN SPACE =According to the UW – Madison Department of unban and regional planning,
advantages of green space include , “ helping regulate air quality and climate…. Reducing
energy consumption of countering the warming effect of paved surfaces…recharging
groundwater supplies and protecting lakes .
27. A Fourth Pillar
“…. Cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as
biodiversity Is for nature .” Sustainable development cannot
be understood “ simply in terms of economic growth, but also
as a means to achieve a more satisfactory intellectual,
emotional, moral , and spiritual existence.
Universal declaration on cultural Diversity (
UNESCO . 2001)
28. How many thing , learn and solve problems, what they value and
respect, what attracts and delights them , what offends them and
their sense of what is appropriate.
The soil in which the tree of identity has its roots
Manifest itself in human relations system of organization, technology,
arts , politics, economic, community life – all the things that humans
do .
29.
30. There is an underlying, hidden level of culture that is highly patterned
– a set of unspoken, implicit rules of behavior and thought that
controls everything we do . This hidden cultural grammar defines the
way in which people view the World, determines their value , and
establishes the basic tempo and rhythms of life . Most of us are either
totally unaware or else only peripherally aware of this . I call these
hidden paradigms primary level culture. (E.T.Hall)
31. The collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the
members of one group from another – the software of the mind
The eyes through which we see the world.
32.
33. Clean water & air
Fertile soil & good food
A livelihood & a healthy economy
An optimum population size
Halting global warming
Safety from poverty & disease
Social contract& a sense of
community
Work, rest & celebration
Opportunities to learn
39. Respect and care fir the community of life
Improve the quality of human life
Conserve the earth’s vitality and diversity
Minimize the depletion of non-renewable capacity
Change attitudes and practices
Enable communities to care for their own environment
Provide a national framework for integrating development and
conservation
Create a global alliance
40. Reduce dependence upon fossils fuel, underground
metals, and minerals
Reduce dependence upon synthetic chemical and others
unnatural substance
Reduce encroachment upon nature
Meet human needs fairly & efficiently
41. Global level – Ozone depletion ,Climate change; and Air pollution
Regional, National or Area level
water pollution- water depletion- deforestation- fisheries depletion
biodiversity- desertification and erosion
Local level – a plot , a farm or a village.
Soil losses – loss of soil quality ( chemical or Physical ) – loss of
farm income .
42.
43. Sustainable development requires the active involvement of all
stakeholders: government NGOs , private sector , but also civil
society. It is not just politicians, or policymakers who decide
what SD should be like .
44. You have to remind policy makers to make decisions to protect
your future: you can remind them that you want better jobs ,
cleaner cities, more equitable resources distribution, above all , a
guarantee that your future is secure , full of opportunity, a
pleasant World to live in and a healthy planet .
46. Eco friendly
Present generation should aware fir needs of presence and
future generations.
And also ensure the productivity assets available to future
generations are not .
Such technologies need to be developed and implemented
which help to conserve resources.
Prevent unnecessary pollution and help restore the environment
wherever appropriate.
48. We need to spread social awareness to bring massive
change in social attitude.
Action must be taken against the backdrop of serious
inequities and their impact on the Environment
Environmental mistakes of the past need not to be
repeated, as past patterns of degradation are not inevitable.
49. There are many always of
communication what sustainable
practices is …..
However what is most important
is to understand is to understand
the connectedness of each of
these areas
