Sclerosing agents are injected into unwanted veins to immediately shrink them and cause the veins to dissolve over weeks as the body absorbs them. Sclerosants include detergents, osmotic agents, and chemical irritants that disrupt or damage the vein's cellular membrane. Sclerosing agents are used to treat vascular malformations in children, as well as spider veins, smaller varicose veins, and hemorrhoids in adults.
