2. INTRODUCTION
 Bleeding gums is one of the most common conditions affecting
the oral cavity. The Chinese noticed bleeding gums as early as
2500 BC. They termed the associated diseases as ‘Ya-Kon’ which
means diseases of the soft tissue surrounding the teeth.
 Bleeding gums indicates a slowly progressing disease of the gums,
which may further involve the bone supporting the teeth and
ultimately result in tooth loss.

3.  Bleeding gums can result from following causes:
- Poor oral hygiene and tobacco use
- Vitamin K or C deficiency
- Stress-It can make it more difficult for the body to fight off infection.
- Taking blood thinners or other medications such as antidepressants, certain
heart medications and oral contraceptives.
- Any Bleeding or clotting disorders, diabetes or hereditary condition.
- Infection, which can be either in a tooth or the gum.
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy, resulting in pregnancy gingivitis.
- Dentures that don’t fit.
- Mouth sores

4.  Symptoms of bleeding gums are:
►The gums become soft, spongy and swollen.
► Bleeding - Bleeding is usually noticed while brushing
the teeth, or in the saliva, while spitting. Eating of any
coarse food items may induce bleeding from gums.
► Pain - Bleeding of the gums may occur with or without
associated pain.The pain, if present, is usually dull in
nature.
► Bad breath.

5. Treatment of bleeding gums includes:
 Applying pressure-Gum bleeding can be controlled by applying
pressure with a gauze pad soaked in ice water directly to the bleeding
gums.
Local application of some over-the-counter liquid solutions that
contain astringents can help control or reduce bleeding of the gums.
But long lasting results are obtained only by treating the cause.
 Proper dental hygiene - If long standing inflammation is the cause of
bleeding then removal of the source of bacteria will result in
improvement of the condition. Proper maintenance of the teeth by the
patient is a must.

6.  Vitamins supplements - For vitamin deficiency, proper diet or
vitamin supplements are recommended. Sore and bleeding gums can
be aggravated by citrus fruits and juices, rough or spicy food,
alcohol, and tobacco. Vitamin C supplements are recommended, if
citrus fruits and juices cannot be taken.
 If dentures (artificial teeth) make gums bleed, wear them only
during meals.
 Brush teeth gently (with a soft-bristle toothbrush) after every meal.
 Rinsing the mouth with salt water or hydrogen peroxide and
water

7.  Use a soft toothbrush and brush your teeth for at least two minutes
twice a day. Aggressive brushing can further damage the soft tissues
of your mouth. It is best if you can brush after every meal.
 Floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to
remove any remaining plaque.
 Rinse with warm salt water and avoid mouthwashes that contain
alcohol, which can dry out your mouth.
 Stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can
make bleeding gums worse.

8.  Visit the dentist at least once every 6 months for plaque
removal.
 Avoid aspirin unless your doctor has recommended that you
take it.
 If side effects of any medicine are causing the bleeding gums,
ask your doctor to prescribe a different medicine.
 See your dentist if your dentures or other dental appliances
do not fit well and are causing sore spots on your gums.
