Skipper has found that these ten tools help
him to cope with the river of life
Building Resilience
• The way you think can affect the way you feel
• There are different ways of looking at the same thing
• Focusing on what you are grateful for can help
Look on the
Bright Side
In this unit we will cover:
Building Resilience
Skipper is hurt by
unkind comments
One day Skipper overhears a friend
say, ‘Look at Skipper’s boat. It’s old
and tatty. He hasn’t been looking
after it very well, has he?’
Skipper is upset. He loves his
boat and he is sad to hear
what other people think.
Building Resilience
The way you
think can
affect the way
you feel
Building Resilience
Unhelpful thinking can bring you down
Skipper remembers what he
heard. The words go round
and round in his head. He
starts to think…
Maybe they are
right… my boat
is a bit old and
tatty
Perhaps I should
have done a better
job of looking after
it
All this thinking starts to
bring him down. It stops
him seeing clearly. It starts
to feel very dark and
gloomy on the boat.
Building Resilience
Thoughts can be changed
Skipper decides he needs to
stop thinking about it. He
looks in his tool box and
pulls out a Helpful Thinking
Helmet. He puts it on. He
asks himself the following
questions:
Is this true?
Is this helpful?
Is this kind?
Building Resilience
Use a Helpful Thinking Helmet
The Helpful Thinking Helmet
helps Skipper to realise what
was said is not true, not
helpful and not kind.
When he realises this he
begins to feel much better. It
doesn’t seem like such a big
deal anymore.

There are
different ways of
looking at the
same thing

Big deal or little deal?
Like Skipper, if we see something
as a little deal, it is easier for us to
forget about it and move on.
If we see it as big deal, it can
weigh us down. Instead of just
thinking about it, we need to do
something about it.

Looking at things in different ways
can help us to cope with them
For example, someone
else could see Skipper’s
boat as an old and tatty
boat. However that is only
their opinion.
In Skipper’s opinion, he sees
a boat that is beautiful because
it has helped him to cope with
all the challenges on the river
of life.

what you are
grateful for can
help

It can help to make a list of
what we are grateful for
To help, Skipper decides to
make a list of all the things he
loves about his boat.
When we focus on the good
things or good people we
have in our lives. It can help
us to feel better.

Keep hold of things
you are grateful for
Think of yourself as an
‘Appreciation Collector’.
The more you notice things you
are grateful for, the bigger the
collection you’ll have.

Create your own
memory jar of things
that you are grateful for.
Add items to the jar
which reminds you of
good times.
Be appreciation collectors and
create a ‘class appreciation
station’. You can leave notes of
thanks for what others have
done for you.

Some things in life are bad
they can really make you mad
and other things can put you to the test
when you're chewing on life's gristle
don't grumble, give a whistle
and this'll make things turn out
for the best and…

there's something you've forgotten
and that's to laugh and dance
and smile and sing
when you're feeling in the dumps
don't be silly chumps
just purse your lips and whistle
that's the thing and…

and you think you’ve had enough
and you’re being really driven round the bend
so keep your spirits up
don’t be a silly pup
this could be the beginning,

  • 4. Skipper has found that these ten tools help him to cope with the river of life
  • 5. Building Resilience • The way you think can affect the way you feel • There are different ways of looking at the same thing • Focusing on what you are grateful for can help Look on the Bright Side In this unit we will cover:
  • 6. Building Resilience Skipper is hurt by unkind comments One day Skipper overhears a friend say, ‘Look at Skipper’s boat. It’s old and tatty. He hasn’t been looking after it very well, has he?’ Skipper is upset. He loves his boat and he is sad to hear what other people think.

  • 8. Building Resilience Unhelpful thinking can bring you down Skipper remembers what he heard. The words go round and round in his head. He starts to think… Maybe they are right… my boat is a bit old and tatty Perhaps I should have done a better job of looking after it All this thinking starts to bring him down. It stops him seeing clearly. It starts to feel very dark and gloomy on the boat.
  • 9. Building Resilience Thoughts can be changed Skipper decides he needs to stop thinking about it. He looks in his tool box and pulls out a Helpful Thinking Helmet. He puts it on. He asks himself the following questions: Is this true? Is this helpful? Is this kind?
  • 10. Building Resilience Use a Helpful Thinking Helmet The Helpful Thinking Helmet helps Skipper to realise what was said is not true, not helpful and not kind. When he realises this he begins to feel much better. It doesn’t seem like such a big deal anymore. Ask yourself… When could you use a Helpful Thinking Helmet?

  • 13. Building Resilience Big deal or little deal? Like Skipper, if we see something as a little deal, it is easier for us to forget about it and move on. If we see it as big deal, it can weigh us down. Instead of just thinking about it, we need to do something about it.

  • 16. Building Resilience Looking at things in different ways can help us to cope with them For example, someone else could see Skipper’s boat as an old and tatty boat. However that is only their opinion. In Skipper’s opinion, he sees a boat that is beautiful because it has helped him to cope with all the challenges on the river of life.

  • 18. Building Resilience It can help to make a list of what we are grateful for To help, Skipper decides to make a list of all the things he loves about his boat. When we focus on the good things or good people we have in our lives. It can help us to feel better.
  • 19. Building Resilience Keep hold of things you are grateful for Think of yourself as an ‘Appreciation Collector’. The more you notice things you are grateful for, the bigger the collection you’ll have. Ask Yourself… What are you grateful for?

  • 22. Building Resilience Family Activity Class Task Create your own memory jar of things that you are grateful for. Add items to the jar which reminds you of good times. Be appreciation collectors and create a ‘class appreciation station’. You can leave notes of thanks for what others have done for you.

Building Resilience Always look on the Bright Side of Life Some things in life are bad they can really make you mad and other things can put you to the test when you're chewing on life's gristle don't grumble, give a whistle and this'll make things turn out for the best and… Always look on the bright side of life always look on the light side of life

Building Resilience Some things in life are tough and you think you’ve had enough and you’re being really driven round the bend so keep your spirits up don’t be a silly pup this could be the beginning, not the end and… Always look on the bright side of life always look on the light side of life x3

Editor's Notes

  1. Suggestion – Play ‘Always Look in the Bright Side of Life’ on entrance to assembly
  2. Skipper has to start to think about what he has heard The words he heard start going round and round in his head. He can’t get the negative comment out of his head. It is going round and round and he is spiralling further and further down. He is now in the doom and gloom and is feeling very negative about himself.
  3. It had certainly not been a kind thing to say. Once Skipper thought about it he realised it was not true and he needed to stop wasting time thinking about it. When he did this he began to feel much better and feel a lot more up - lighter even. It didn’t seem like such a big deal anymore
  4. EXPLAIN: To help us with this it can be useful when thinking about a situation to ask ourselves is this a big deal or a little deal? Little deals are normally something that can be fixed with just a small change, is temporary and doesn’t last for very long. A big deal is something that lasts a lot longer and can’t be changed easily or at all. If we ask if something is a big deal or a little deal and discover it is a little deal we can then try to fix the problem or ask somebody else to help us fix it. You will be learning a lot more about this throughout the unit back in your classrooms. Ask the kids what do they think? Is Skipper right – was it a big deal or a little deal? At the beginning Skipper thought the comments were a big deal but after reflecting with his thinking helmet he realises it is a little deal. This highlights that there is more than one way to look at the same thing….. To help us with this it can be useful when thinking about a situation to ask ourselves is this a big deal or a little deal? Two faces or a candle stick Just like in these optical illusions where you can look at the same thing in two different ways we can also do this with how we think about situations in our life. If we change our perspective on something we can change how we feel about something and it can help us to feel better.
  7. Explore the idea that both are right and could be true….but it is all down to your perspective of things.
  8. When we are feeling down it is especially important to open up your eyes to seeing the brighter side of life. We can do this by focusing on the good things or people we have in life and this can help us to feel better. It is important to remember that while there are some things in life we can not change we have a choice in how we deal with it. By focussing on the good things it can change how you are feeling and can help to reduce the pain or stress you are feeling.
