STEM4youth EU project or when research is done with schoolsJosep Perelló
We have just started a new EU project: STEM4youth. This is a SEAC project focussed on the Promotion of STEM education by key scientific challenges and their impact on our life and career perspectives. OpenSystems, our grup at UB, will contribute to this project by developing with very concrete schools specific research projects using participatory and citizen science practices in relation to human decision making and human mobility. We will work very closely with at least 2 schools to formulate the right scientific questions and see how far we can go together in a research project within the field of complex systems and computational social science. This effort can be considered as a continuation and as one step forward with respect to a pilot project within our recent RecerCaixa project of 20 hours of duration, in three different Secondary schools and restricted to human mobility. We will share the strategies of this new project
and the outcomes of early stages of this approach which with Complex Systems, Big Data and Social Systems.

This higher education case study presentation was delivered by Rosemary Borup during the measuring employability workshop of the December 2015 Learning Networks event held in Cardiff.
This keynote speech will synthesize lessons learned from more than 20 years of research and development in the areas of digital learning. The international research Centre CARDET participated in more than 100 digital learning research projects which focus on the use of technology across several contexts. The use of games, social media, and online tools is opening opportunities to both learners and teachers. The emphasis will be on the role of digital tools for revisiting how we teach and learn, and the potential for transforming education practices. We will focus on 3 key projects with interconnected themes.
Digital Responsible Citizenship - https://digital-citizenship.org. The DRC project seeks to improve students and teachers digital citizenship and competency in line with several components of the digital citizenship framework.
iDecide - http://www.idecide-project.eu. This policy reform project aims to develop an innovative toolkit and a mobile app to support evidence-based policy making. The focus is the reduction of disparities in learning outcomes and marginalization, by supporting school leaders, school staff, and policymakers to engage in shared and inclusive decision making.
ENTRINNO – Online game for entrepreneurship and innovation - http://www.entrinno.org. As part of this project we developed an online game teaching youth entrepreneurial skills. The project was implemented and evaluated in 8 EU countries.
We will bring together lessons learned discussing the key issues around gamification, storytelling, social media, and digital citizenship, providing recommendations for both researchers and practitioners.
This presentation is part of a seminar on online education hosted by the international research center CARDET and the Department of Education at the University of Nicosia. It provides an overview of online education, history, challenges, trends in higher education, and practical recommendations for the design and delivery of online programs.

6. The SciFi-Ed project aims
1. To increase pupils’ motivation and achievement in
science and other subjects, through the introduction of
Science Fiction in education.
2. To enhance the quality of teaching Science and
Technology, as well as an array of other subjects to
children aged between 9-15 years old.
3. To connect science education with real-life issues
such as the environment.
4. To provide girls and other marginalised groups with
better access to science education.
5. To contribute to the improvement of initial teacher
education and in-service professional development of
science teachers and to the exchange of innovative
teaching practices.
7. The SciFi-Ed project specific objectives
1. To introduce European educators of pupils aged between 9-15 to the
genre of science fiction and its subgenres, and convince them about its
literary and pedagogical value.
2. To provide educators with analytical information regarding acclaimed
international and European authors of Science Fiction for children and
young adults, and Sci-Fi titles available in partner countries.
3. To describe general approaches and specific methods and techniques to
teach through Science Fiction key competences and concepts in Science
and other important areas of the curriculum.
4. To support educators in utilizing film, multimedia, and Web 2.0
technologies to introduce Science Fiction in education.
5. To design sample Sci-Fi cross-curricular teaching units that may be used
by educators but also function as models for building new teaching units.
6. To pilot and implement Sci-Fi cross-curricular units in European schools,
record observations and conclusions, and make the results available to
teachers, schools, and policy makers in the form of case-study
descriptions.

8. The SciFi-Ed project Innovative Aspect
• European educational practice currently ignores or
even downgrades Science Fiction
• SciFi-Ed is the first project of its kind to tap on the full
potential of this exciting genre. The project’s innovation
lies exactly in the interdisciplinary/ cross-curricular
approach it proposes for infusing lessons across the
curriculum with the power of a good Science Fiction
story, and attracting students’ interest in science,
technology, and an entire spectrum of other fields of
knowledge.
