2. At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Illustrate how energy from volcanoes
may be tapped for human use; Code:
S9ES –IIIc-d-29
3. Lesson 1
1. define what geothermal energy is
2. identify some places in the
Philippines that use geothermal power
to generate electricity
4.
5.
6. The sun is Earth’s main source of
energy. It has a vast amount of energy.
The sun is considered Earth’s main energy
source since most of our energy sources
derive their energy from it.
7. There are two types of energy resources on Earth –
renewable and nonrenewable.
1. A renewable energy source or alternative energy
is one that can be replaced in a short period of
time such as solar energy and hydropower energy
while
2. a nonrenewable energy source takes millions of
years to replace or can never be replenished.
These energy sources can be used in many ways.
8. The Philippines is located along
the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of
volcanos and volcanic activities,
energy has been collected from them
making our country ranked second in
the worlds production of geothermal
energy.
9.
10. But do you know what Geothermal Energy really is?
Some natural source of heat beneath the
Earth’s surface. This source of heat warms up
water which is trapped in rocks formations and may
come up beneath its surface naturally
19. If you were to dig a big hole straight down into
the ground, you would notice that the temperature deep
down below is getting hotter the deeper you go. Why?
That is because the interior of the Earth is full of heat.
That heat is referred to Geothermal Energy!
The term geothermal energy is easy to
remember if you will break it down! The Greek word
geo refers to the Earth, and thermal means heat, so
geothermal energy is energy from Earth’s heat. This
energy is then used to power generators in the
production of electricity.
20. According to the Department of Energy one-fourth or 14.4%
of the electricity in the Philippines is geothermal generated such as in
Tiwi (Albay), Kidapawan (North Cotabato), Calaca (Laguna),
Tongonan (Leyte), Bago City (Negros Occidental), Valencia (Negros
Oriental), and Bacon (Sorsogon).
Power plants are built in an area where it is particularly hot
just below the surface such as near a group of geysers, hot springs,
or volcanic activity.
22. What’s More
Refer to the Map of the Philippine below, name
the different geothermal power plants and their
specific location. Choose your answer inside the
box and write it on the space provided.
