The Importance Of Sports Psychology In Sports
Sports psychology is one of the most up and coming sciences in the field of psychology. The
primary focus of this field is to teach these athletes in utilizing their mental capacity and their
physical talent to the fullest to reach that max performance. Psychologist in the sports field
examine the performance of the players and use principles that include motivational, cognitive, and
behavioral attributes to reach these high performance levels (Cox, 2012). A large portion of
success that occur in sports is due to mental factors and mastering the psychological aspect of it.
Seeing the importance of mental training in the past years has become crucial today. Scientist have
developed a variety of mental training programs that focus on mastering the skill of self confidence
(Cox, 2012).
Real life example of mental training According to Voight (2005), sports psychologyrefers to
assisting athletes to cleanse the mind of the clutter that is preventing them from achieving their
goal in sports. Voight also mentioned of an individual of the name James Dodson who is an
American sports writer. Before Dodson became a writer, he used to play golf. Dodson always
tried to break 80 strokes in golf. However, he always came up short in the game. Dodson use to go
out and purchase expensive gear and irons he thought would help in hitting 80 strokes. Even then
he still failed. It wasn t until he started seeing a sports psychologist to assist him in accomplishing
his goal. Dodson began to free

Obsession In Two Literary Works Essay
Obsession is one of the greatest obstacles for mankind to overcome. In Naguib Mahfouz s Midaq
Alley and Gabriel Garcia Marquez s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the motif of obsession helps
to both characterize and even foreshadow the fates of the characters. Both novels illustrate that
obsessions with an object or person leads to demise, but the novels differ in how they portray the
effects of these obsessions on humanity. Before continuing this analysis, obsession will be clearly
defined. For the purpose of this essay, obsession will be characterized by three concepts: the
character is shown constantly contemplating the desired object or person, most of a character s
actions or goals are oriented towards the object or person, and... Show more content on

When confronted with the obstacle of religion, Hamida yells I don t give a damn [about
violating the Qur an]! (Midaq Alley, P146). This complete disregard for her promises to both
Abbas and religious icons portrays Hamida s obsession with acquiring money as she consistently
contemplates money, orients all of her actions around gaining money, and as she destroys
religious obstacles in order to attain money. Later, Hamida s obsession with money leads her
into prostitution, emotional turbulence, and misery as she undergoes a moral degradation in
order to satiate her obsession. While Hamida is obsessed with financial success and the luxuries
that it brings, her fiancГ© Abbas is obsessed with his love for Hamida. After the first time of
being rejected by Hamida, Abbas refuses to leave her alone because he is truly in love and
[feels] certain his love for her would last a thousand years (Midaq Alley, P44). Although Hamida
rejects Abbas on numerous occasions, she is eventually convinced of his love as Abbas promises
to work for the Army to gain enough money to give Hamida anything she desires. Once Abbas
leaves for the army, Hamida looks to other men for financial stability instead of waiting for her
fiancГ© to return. When Abbas finally returns, he begins to drink in order to escape his emotional
pain. When Abbas notices the coquettish personality of Hamida as

Communication In Aviation Essay
Topic: Discuss the importance of communication in aviation and explain how misunderstandings in
communication have caused aircraft accidents
As the years progress, airplanes have been regarded as the handiest method to experience all the
foreign nations since the 1950s. There is no denying that the impact on aviation on human history
is vital. Hence, the public anticipates that the industry is approximately perfect. Nevertheless, with
the collisions of the past aircraft, it is evident that misapprehending the communication between the
air traffic controllers and pilots account for mortal accidents. Consequently, I am going to compare
two aircraft accidents in the past and analyze how the tragedy resulted from.
The Linate Airport disaster happened on October 8, 2001, miscommunication and Air Traffic
Control s unawareness were the major reasons that accounted for the collision at Linate Airport
which is one of the busiest airports in Milan, Italy. The runway was surrounded by dense fog, which
made the visibility condensed to approximately 656 feet (200 meters). Furthermore, the
meteorological condition may also have contributed to the tragedy, combined with factors such as
high traffic volume.
The Cessna 525A CitationJet 2, D IEVX, arrived at Milan following a flight from Cologne (Köln).
Cessna 525A was to carry out a return flight to Paris Le Bourget, carrying two pilots, a Cessna s

Essay Emile Durkheim and the Collective Conscience
Emile Durkheim and the Collective Conscience Emile Durkheim (1858 1917) was a French
sociologist who strongly influenced the discipline of sociology. It was apparent to Durkheim that
since the French Revolution, the nation had been wracked by conflict and moral crisis (Stones,
2008). At the individual level, rising suicide rates reflected a growing sense of malaise. Durkheim s
goal was to develop a sociologythat would help France overcome this continuing moral crisis. By
tracing the influences on Durkheim to his predecessor August Comte and the German scholars of
experimental psychology, it is possible to understand how Durkheim came to the conclusion that
society is greater than the individual, and how his idea of a collective... Show more content on

In contrast, individuals who populate any society are eminently social beings guided by moral
rules. Pope and Johnson (1983) state that Durkheim proposed that society revitalizes individuals
and gives them strength to persevere in the face of the vicissitudes of everyday life. Stones
(2008), further states that Durkheim felt that we acquired all the best in ourselves and all the
things that distinguish us from other animals from our social existence. Thought, language,
world views, rationality, morality and aspirations are derived from society. Thus, the
unsocialised individual, the individual divorced form society, the beast within us, is a poor
approximation of the highly socialised beings that constitute societies. The importance of social
factors over the individual can also be seen in Durkheim s work on suicide (Stones, 2008).
Suicide was explained in terms of two independent variables, integration in society and regulation
by society. Low levels of integration led to egoistic suicide, while low levels of regulation led to
anomic suicide. Durkheim cited egoism and anomie as the main causes of suicide in the modern
world; a world which he believed showed less interaction and people thinking more about
themselves than others. As a result, people are less bound to one another, there is less community
and social control is weaker (Stones, 2008). Durkheim applied his

Citizen Kane Narrative Techniques
1.)Citizen Kane is recognized as one of the greatest films made in the history of cinema, mostly due
to its innovativeness. The cinematography, sound, and narrative structure cemented Citizen Kane s
legacy and influenced films of all genres for years to come. James Naremore wrote an essay that
described why Citizen Kanewas held up to such high regard, using examples from other scenes to
highlight how the use of certain techniques help to make the film stand out. Naremore writes that
Kane is important for many reasons, among them its ingenious juggling of time and perspective, its
carefully designed sound track, and its influential use of wide angle, deep focus photography. (pg.
322, Naremore, Film Analysis). The film strategies that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Citizen Kane focuses on developing scenes from the protagonist s past, and how his death has
affected the secondary plot of a reporter investigating his last words. The narrative strategy, in
which the whole story is told in flashback from slightly different points of view (the equivalent of
the unreliable narrator in fiction), was unprecedented in a Hollywood film. The technique of
telling the story of Kane from multiple points of view dispels the illusion that we are learning
the truth about Charles Foster Kane. As numerous commentators such as Naremore have
observed, the film is like a complicated jigsaw puzzle which the viewer must piece together, bit
by bit, in order to see the whole picture. Only in the final moments of the film, when we despair
of ever discovering the meaning of Rosebud, does the film s narration return us to a privileged
omniscient perspective, revealing the final missing piece. One scene that helps develop the unique
structure is the beginning scene, with the film opening to Kane s death. Most films do not begin
with the character s death, especially with a detailed scene like Citizen Kane. At the start of the
film, the camera pans up and over a sign on a wire fence

Qfd3 Case Study
Qfd1 (labeled as Qbws1 on the chart) was found at River Mile 189.5 preserved between a Black
Ledge lava dam remnant and a basalt flow. The base of the deposit was 110m above the current
river level while the top of the deposit was 170 m above the current river level. The clasts were
92% basalt and had identical Rare earth element (REE) patterns, which indicated that they came
from the same lava dam source. The clasts ranged in size from hyaloclastite ash and lapilli to a 6
m diameter limestone boulder. Based on age and pattern of REE, Qfd1 deposits seemed to have
correlated with the dam produced by the Upper Prospect lava flows (Fenton et al. (2004)). While
the Toroweap Dam correlated in age to Qfd1, its REE pattern did not align in a parallel... Show

It was composed primarily of gravels, basalts, and glass. The basalts and glasses in Qfd3 did not
seem to be related based on the La/Sm ratio while their Gd/Lu ratios were somewhat similar.
Qfd3 deposits were complicating in correlating to a specific dam to the fact that the presence of
extralocal river gravels and quartz in the lower parts of the deposition could indicate two
separate flooding events. One correlation is with the Whitmore Cascade because its La/Sm and
Gd/Lu was similar to the REE pattern of Qfd3 s boulders. Another idea is that the failure of the
Toroweap Dam could have emplaced the existing outburst flood deposit thus explaining the
presence of extralocal gravels. The hypothesis with the most consistent result is that the failure of
a lava dam near the Whitmore Cascade reworked the previous Qfd3 deposit and deposited
boulders and cobbles from the Whitmore Cascade on top of Qfd3 glasses. This hypothesis is
consistent with the REE chart thus this explanation is seen as a strong candidate. Qfd4 deposits

Reconstruction During The Civil War Essay
Reconstruction
The United States went through many changes after the Civil War and during the Reconstruction
period of 1866 1877. Before Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on December, 1863, by John
Wilkes, Lincoln announced the first Reconstruction plan a year before the Civil War had ended
and Lincoln offered general amnesty to white southerners who would pledge an oath of loyalty to
the government and accept the abolition of slavery. During the summer of 1865, Johnson not long
after he took office had revealed his plan for Reconstruction or as he preferred to call it
Restoration, which reflected both his staunch Unionism and his firm belief in states rights. He
offered some form of amnesty to Southerners who would take the oath of allegiance.
In 1865 and 1866, under the administration of President Andrew Johnson new southern state
legislatures passed restrictive black codes to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and
other African Americans. North outraged over these codes eroded support which led to the triumph
of the more radical wing of the Republican Party and the approach known as Presidential
Reconstruction. During Radical Reconstruction which began in 1866, and for the first time in
American history, blacks gained a voice in government and they won elections to southern state
legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces
including the Ku Klux Klan would reverse the changes wrought by Radical

What Is The Effect Of Door-Holding Behavior On Door...
Introduction (half page max.) Method Participants Participants who were observed are students
and staffs in university of Toronto. Materials A sign with Be kind, hold the door was used in this
experiment to see the influence on the behaviour of participants. Procedure The whole experiment
is divided into three phrases. From first ten minutes, participants are observed in terms of door
holding behaviour. Then, the target behaviour(whether they hold the door) are recorded. In next 10
minutes, a sign is used to examine the difference in frequency of the target behaviour. In last 10
minutes, the sign is removed and the target behaviour is observed. Researchers need to observe
participants without any physical and verbal interference during the process. After data are
collected, researchers need to use statistical method to analyze it. Experimental Design DV IDV In
this study, quasi experimental method was used. The independent variable is the presence of the

Story Of An Hour By Kate Chopin
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is a short story from the late nineteenth century focusing on a
young woman as she reacts to a report that says her husband, on the top of the list of the report, had
died in a train accident. Due to this unfortunate accident she is given the chance of freedom and
Chopin s story tells that hour.
The main theme to this short story one may think it relates to the saying, carpe diem , meaning to
seize the day. The themes of this short story include oppression and repression. In the late
nineteenth century, society wanted women to take care of their children, cook, and keep the house
clean. This short story hints that Mrs. Mallard s husband was in charge of his wife. Jamil states that
a woman is not expected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A piece of irony from the short story was the title of the story, The Story of an Hour. This may be
ironic to one because, just by the title being stated, the story must have happened within an hour,
but Kate Chopin made it seem like it lasted a couple of days. This is ironic because Mrs. Mallard
only needed an hour to know that she did not need her husband anymore to be happy and live.
But, it would take another wife, maybe a few years to fully recover from a spouse s death. The
main irony one may see the most is in the end of the story in paragraph twenty three when Katie
Chopin states …joy that kills (Chopin, 2). Jamil states Louise is the joy that she refuses to
surrender, as the patriarchy would require her to do at Brently s return. But, for one climactic
hour of her life, Louise does truly taste joy. (220) This is an ironic sentence at the end of the
story due to the doctors believed that Mrs. Mallard was happy to see her husband alive and in
one piece. The ending was very ironic because of the outcome of Mrs. Mallard. The whole story
was a rising action until you got to her death at the end of the story. The author made it seem that
there was so much for Mrs. Mallard to live for, but when Mrs. Mallard saw her husband, alive,
there was not anything worth living for to Mrs.

Why Same Sex Couples Should Be Allowed to Legally Marry
Why Same Sex Couples Should be Allowed to Legally Marry
All men were created equal. It is for this reason that gays have the same rights when it comes to
housing, jobs, protection under the law, and so on, despite their difference in sexual preference.
Well then, if gays have the same rights as heterosexual men and women, why can they not be
legally married in the U.S? That is the question that half our country should be asking themselves,
since 50% of U.S citizens oppose gay marriage. However, extraordinarily, 75% of the people in the
U.S are all for gay rights (Bidstrup). But, when it comes to marriage, for one reason or another, the
line is drawn. Gay relationships are the same as straight relationships in all aspects except ... Show

As the case with various arguments, there are all whom will take the slippery slope argument
approach in their reasoning for the banning of gay marriage. A slippery slope argument is a
point in which one thing happening will lead to another thing happening, triggering a domino
effect of negative consequences from one single action. In this case, the argument at hand would
be that along with the legalization of gay marriage comes the allowing of bestial marriage,
polygamy, and many other wrongs (Bidstrup). This tactic of scaring people of accepting the
beneficial consequences of one rational decision is absurd. In countries where gay marriage is
legal, there has been no talk of any such changes or disgusting tendencies. In many Scandinavian
countries where same sex marriages are allowed, society has remained sound (Bidstrup). If
anything, marriages between criminals and those who lack morals would lead towards the anarchy
that would occur with bestial marriages and polygamy. Those who have homosexual preferences
do not share any of the same moral defects as do the criminals that can wed freely. Society needs to
open their eyes to the normality of homosexuality and the benefits of gay marriage will be
exposed. There are those who believe that gay marriage defeats the purpose of the bonding
between two different gendered people in reproduction. The idea that gay marriage should be
disallowed because two same sex partners can t reproduce is

The Impact Of British Art On The World Of Art And...
British art is respected across the world for it s unique techniques and skills used for painting. A
lot of artist from around the world visit Britain for it s thick culture in the world of art and
opportunities. Almost all Minority art made in Britain falls into one of the two baskets, either it is
created by an artist from an African American/ Caribbean origin, or by the common people of the
Indian sub continental background. Despite of the attempts made to accumulate these two
inconsequential groups together, in order to promote, what Britain still identifies as Black art ,
what they bring to the world of art is radically divergent, mostly because of their origin s personal
crisis as well as due to their history of struggle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Otherness in the field of art in some regions is not being identified and appreciated as it should
be. Fixity has now become a way of practicing culture, where racial differences in the discourse of
colonialism, is a incongruous methodology of representation. Fixity gives a feeling of firmness and
an unchanging order as well as disorder, immortality and daemonic repetition of racism in art
naturally.
Similarly, the racial and gender stereotype, that is reflected in the way of art and it s analysis, is
a major rambling blueprint, in the manifestation of identification as well as of consciousness, that
wavers between different opinions of what is conscientiously being repeated, always in a fixed
state and something that has already been known for a long period of time. Therefore, it is the
force of ambivalence that gives racial stereotype it s prevalence, and that shield s it s repeatability
in changing historical events and in it s wandering case.
Art is known to be region based, but a lot of artist now prefer going to a different nation and
grasp a different technique and skills. But when it comes to opportunities, for example; an Indian
origin or South Asian origin artist may be at a greater disadvantage as compared to the white artist
in British society, mainly because of an unchallenged racial intolerance or partiality, and also
because of the history of British colonies in Asia. History

Essay On San Joaquin Valley Environment
The San Joaquin Valley Environment: Live Well or Live Long? According to Doyle Rice of
USA Today Newspaper, California is currently in it s fourth year (2012 2015) of one of the state
s worst droughts in the past century. In August of 2014, all of California was declared to be in a
drought and over half of the state was in exceptional drought, the worst level (Rice). This drought
has led to violent wildfires, water shortages, and potentially staggering agricultural losses. Because
of the severity of the drought, the CaliforniaGovernor, Jerry Brown, declared a statewide drought
emergency to reduce water usage and regulate restrictions on the use of outdoor water. One of the
areas in California that would be greatly affected by the drought is the San Joaquin Valley, a place
well known for it s agricultural success because of it s environment. My goal in this paper is to
inform you of what the San Joaquin Valley environment is like, partially in result of the California
drought, and how the valley environment is impacting the lives of the residents.

the profits coming into the valley. Water companies are then forced to dig into the aquifers, or
natural underground water supplies, which have caused the land to sink. All of these environments
have affected one another and have caused ill effects to the residents, more so due to the California

The Difference Between Civil Rights And Civil Rights
I noted that the U.S. civil liberties, as well as, U.S. civil rights are generally located in the first ten
amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, as well as, the Fourteenth
Amendment. The distinction between civil liberties and civil rights is blurred since the concepts
are used interchangeably, even though they refer to different kinds of guaranteed protections. Civil
liberties are protections against government actions. Whereas civil rightsrefer to positive actions
governments should take to create equal conditions. The primary objective of this essay is to
distinguish between civil rights and civil liberties. In this essay, I present a case related to the
civil right to free expression or creation of equal conditions in forum 4.1. Whereas in forum 4.2 I
present a provision of the US Patriot Act related to civil liberties or protections against federal
government action.

Course Taking And Apparatus Set Up
Course taking and apparatus set up will be the first steps in this project. For safety measures, the
apparatus needs to be reinstalled under the fume hood. Basic pretreatment processes will be
carried out in order to prepare the biosorbents for adsorption. Aiming to check the reliability of the
system and find possible pitfalls, some preliminary tests will be run, and the results will be
analyzed. Once the reliability of the apparatus, repeatability of the process, and standard operating
procedure are determined, the next phase of the project will be commenced.
5.2Phase 2
In this phase, the experiments will be focused on single component and binary systems. Firstly, pure
methane will be fed into the column and the adsorption process will be investigated. Afterwards,
the same experiments at similar conditions will be carried out using pure water vapor. Based on
the result of these experiments, a new set of experiments will be designed and carried out for
binary systems (Methane and water vapor). Equilibrium and kinetics will be studied. Dynamic
studies will be accomplished. Generally, the performance of Flax Shive and Oat Hulls in PSA
process will be determined.
5.3Phase 3
To further investigate the adsorption process, various isotherms will be fitted on the experimental
data. Equilibrium capacity, uptake of species, diffusion constants, and selectivity will be calculated.
Based on these results, the nature of the adsorption process will be determined. Afterwards, a set

Art Spiegelman Maus Essay
Art Spiegelman writes Maus to depict the events of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. Spiegelman
uses a comic book medium to portray his father s experiences in Auschwitz which is a very
unusual way to write about a serious topic. Art Spiegelman reveals the true terror and horror of the
Holocaust in Maus through firsthand accounts and experiences to enhance and convey a deeper
meaning along with visual representations to intensify the story in a whole new way where the
reader can have a more understandable approach to the events of the comic book. Spiegelman s
way of depicting the Holocaustthrough a comic book is completely acceptable because of the comic
book s visual experiences, and firsthand account evidence that allows the reader to interpret the
book in their creative way to have a more sophisticated interpretation and understanding than with a

Essay about Jane Addams
An American pragmatist and feminist, Hull House founder Jane Addams (1860 1935) came of age
in time of increasing tensions and division between segments of the American society, a division
that was reflected in debates about educational reform. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw
the profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her
efforts to support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways
she relied on to overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. Her
theories about the interdependent nature of living in a democracy provided a backdrop for her
educational theory. Education, she thought, needed to produce people who... Show more content on

They have no common, collective faith. The labor movement in America displays this mark of
its youth and immaturity (Addams 61). In the same tone, she believed that the working class
and capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character
of American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the
workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and
worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the
movement does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor
even necessarily the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62).
Addams saw the definition of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole.
The literal notion of brotherhood demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger
vision of life there can be no perception of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions
became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by reducing their talks to single industry issues. Addams
clearly did not support the Marxist vision of labor, although she frequently read writers adopting
this perspective. As a pragmatist, Addams advocated a number of laws to protect the worker,
especially women workers, which

doesn t merely consist of gothic themes such as the supernatural, incest or the sublime, like many

Subsequently, the count appears a much more powerful figure in the story, predominantly
because of the gender of the character. Rowe states that fairy tales perpetuate the patriarchal
status quo by making female subordination seem a romantic desirable, indeed an inescapable fate
14 This implies that the females in fairytales are often created to appear in control due to the
dramatizing of the fairytale genre, where in fact it is simply superficial and the truth of the matter
is that the male will always be in power. Because of the magical fairytale genre and the
supernatural elements to the tale such as when her boots leapt off the Countess s feet and on to the
girl s legs 15 it presents Carter with the opportunity to Explore the theme of psychic transformation,
liberating her protagonists from conventional gender roles 16 This suggests that because of the
magical sensations that a fairytale brings to a narrative then traditional gender roles are dismissed.
This allows Carter to make the countess appear more masculine at the end of the narrative, looking
down on the Count while she reined in her stamping mare and watched him narrowly 17 and the
Count appear inferior and more feminine; Weeping, the Count got off his horse. 18 This is
stereotypical in many other tales, The Evil Stepmothers in both Snow White and Cinderella and the
men below them are presented as being more feminine. She presents the women in the story as other

The Debate Of God s Existence
We are raised to follow these old traditions which are passed from generation to generation. We
are told to follow certain norms or otherwise the big guy upstairs will punish us for being
disobedient . To many, believing in God is the only way to live, the reason for the way everything
is, and it s the meaning to life. To others, God, is just a popular view whose existencecannot be
proven. While both Atheist and Agnostics agree on the questioning of God s existence, they
disagree on the reasoning of why thing are the way they are. Agnostics believe in a higher power
while Atheists believe in strictly science. Both points of views made me question if science is
really the only explanation for everything, how people came to believing , and the effects of
believing in a higher power. Although it is true, there is no evidence to prove God s existence, why
not live a good moral live regardless of the existence of a higher power or not?
The main argument we are presented with is whether God exists or not. One argues that there is no
evidence to prove its existence while the other one argues that we aren t capable enough to
understand the philosophical mysteries of the universe. One point of view we see is an atheist.
Atheists argue that there is absolutely no scientific evidence for his existence and from what they
have heard the definition of God is a logical impossibility in this known universe therefore, God
does not exists. To Atheist, the explanation behind

The Feathers Of The Wind
Feathers in the Wind I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for the final time. I attempted to
gather my thoughts, but it was no use. There were no thoughts that could justify the action I
needed to do. I composed myself and cocked back the lever to load my BB gun. The steel and
carbonate composite that made up the gun never felt colder, even on a hot summer s day like
today. The world seemed to stop spinning and there was nothing but silence. It was only myself and
the task at hand. I removed my finger from the triggerguard and placed it behind the trigger itself. I
closed my eyes again. I was ready to finish this. It was only an hour beforehand when I found it a
little black and grey fuzzball, like something you would find when you go up to clean out your
attic. I found it resting on the pavement of my driveway. It sat there baking in the hot August
afternoon sun. It was just bobbing its little head around, but unable to move. I walked up to
further investigate and to my unfortunate discovery, it was a small bird. It must have fallen out
of the oak tree and took quite the flight down. Upon further inspection, I found that the bird had
appalling injuries to its neck, head, and wing. The top of the head had a horrible gash which
gave the bird the appearance of having a shaved head. It stuck out like a sore thumb. The wings
were both mangled and broken. I quickly realized that this poor creature was not going to survive.
I tried gathering a shoe box and feeding it and

The Public Sphere Within Theatre
The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen
Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers
to the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public
matters of interest and public issues. Habermas writes: the audience does not constitute a space
for spectators and listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate.
(Habermas in Balme 2012). The Public spherehas now become a space, a stage, for performers,
speakers and protesters to have a voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the
audience, spectators and listeners.
On reading Christopher B. Balme s The theatrical public sphere, the concept of theatre s role in the
Public Sphere is explored. Balme traces the origins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear,
conceptual boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also
little doubt that the major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and
migration, climate change, the erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few)
have all in some way a bearing on the public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and
where citizens are free to enter and engage in discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a
discursive arena located outside and between state bureaucracies on the one hand and economics
and business on the other, it occupies a crucial role in the functioning of so called free societies.
The question to be explored here is what role theatre and performance in practice play in this realm
and how performance and theatre theory can contribute to the debates. (Balme

Before the causes and results of Kennedy s decision to land on the moon can be adequately
analyzed and discussed, it is necessary to understand the context of his time as President and the
events that preceded it. Therefore, I will provide a small amount of context about the Cold Warand
the situation leading up to Kennedy s We choose to go to the moon speech on September 12, 1962.

After the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Unionbecame embroiled in what is
now known as the Cold War, this was both an international competition between two countries, and
an ideological confrontation between capitalism and communism. This led to direct and indirect
competition on many fronts, such as proxy wars and police actions, the Olympics, the Nuclear
Arms Race, and the Space Race. (Citation).
Although there is disagreement on the precise date that the Space Race began, the moment that it
became an important competition that was in the forefront of the minds of everyday Americans is
on April 12, 1961 when Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarinorbited the earth in Vostok 1. (citation).
This event created a feeling amongst the American public that the Russians were further ahead in

How Did World War 1 Occur
World War one happened because an archduke of Austria Hungary named Franz Ferdinand was
assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. It was the first world war and it was also a global war that

their allies; France, Britain, and Russia. First the U.S. wanted to remain neutral but, instead they
decided to join. Some soldiers wanted to remain neutral. The trigger for the war was the
assassination of Ferdinand. The triple Entente and the Central Powers were fighting against each
other in a war using the trench warfare method. Imperialism was another reason for U.S.
involvement. Their job was to make sure that Germany didn t defeat the allies. They also had

Why I Was The Only Person Who Was Ready
My thirteen year old mind could not handle waiting idly in an uncomfortable, wooden chair. By
that time, my powdered makeup had turned into beads of liquid. Can we please leave, I yelled
we re going to be late! In response to no response, I stood up from my chair and marched into my
cousin s room. I was startled as I walked in on one of the most frantic scenes I had ever
witnessed. There were clothes sprawled on the floor, makeup powder on the dresser and jewelry
on the bed. My cousins and aunts were running around the room; some were getting ready, some
were arguing and some were talking on the phone. The mixture of heat and expensive perfume
was asphyxiating. We re going to miss the trip tia ! I failed to understand why I was the only person
who was ready. We had all been aware of our reservations for the party boat in Old San Juanfor
almost a week.
We re almost ready Val, go start the car. Her response was almost humorous because I knew she
was nowhere near being ready. On her head, rested her shower cap and in the closet, hung her
dress. Respectfully, I continued to follow her orders and accept our inevitable lateness.
I was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February,4th, 1999. Since that day, I have come to the
conclusion that no one on the island is familiar with the concept of time. Puerto Ricans often
jokingly regard reoccurring tardiness as a common quality. Along with their skewed view of time,
they also seem to have an aversion to frugality. Unfortunately,

How Does Political Comedy Affect Participation
Participation is the platform of our democratic system, without it, democracy does not work.
Each year brings a new wave of voters, turning 18, that the politicians hope to get a vote out of.
Most of the younger voters, do not turn to hard news to get their information. Instead, they look
to soft news to receive their information. The soft news category encompasses late night news
television, such as Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, and John Oliver. In this paper, I will explore the
implications of John Oliver s Last Week Tonight on voter participation. In this paper, I will argue
that political comedies will affect participation. I will discuss the different late night shows, Jon
Stewart, Steven Colbert, and John Oliver, but I will focus more specifically on John Oliver... Show

On the other hand, many have also feared that we watch late night comedic news shows and
then get a waterdowned version of the issues explained. Research has showed that yes, late night
political satyr shows are increasing participation. One way this is done is through late night TV
shows as a gateway to traditional news. Specifically, with the help of Lauren Feldman and
Dannagal Goldthwaite Young s paper LateNight Comedy as a Gateway to Traditional News, I
will explore this as one reason why political comedy shows affect participation. There are varying
reasons as to how the content of these shows fosters participation. We expect that exposure to
political comedies will encourage political participation because it makes politics fun. These types
of shows build a community of followers Cao and Brewer claim, Such shared experience or

Dred Scott s The Supreme Court Of The United States
It has been presented to the Supreme Court of the United States of America that Mr. Dred Scott
pleas for freedom from his slave master, Mr. Sanford. Initially Mr. Scott was owned by Dr.
Emerson until Mr. Emerson s death when Scott was sold to Mr. Sanford. Under intense scrutiny
and discernment it has been decided by the Supreme Court that Mr. Dred Scott has the
inalienable right to be a free citizen of the United States of America. Scott is a slave, owned by
Mr. and Mrs. John Emerson since 1836. Scott currently resides in St. Louis, Missouri as of
1830. Mr. Dred Scott has presided residence in both Illinois and Wisconsin Territory,
accompanied by his slaveholder. The Illinois and Wisconsin Territories are free, meaning that no
man nor woman can be private property of another. Because of this, Mr. Emerson has no control
nor jurisdiction over Scott. Mr. Scott resided in free territory for several years, therefore, he must
leave this courtroom as a free man. Although slavery is not abolished in the South, it is abolished
in both of the territories that Scott visited during his involvement with Mr. Emerson, making it his
right to be free. It is of the slaveholder s duty to not enter the territories of Illinois and Wisconsin
expecting his slave to maintain in his possession. The responsibility is left on Mr. Emerson and it
is due to his ignorance that his slave will gain freedom today. Slavery is prohibited in both
territories, making it unreasonable that a man should remain a

Freud s theory of psychosexual development is based on erogenous zones which are important
stages of development. According to the theory, there are five stages throughout one s life: Oral
phase, anal phase, phallic phase, latency phase, and genital stage. Each stage is involved in
particular conflicts that must be resolved before moving on to the next stage of development. All
the stages have two things in common: each stage has their own comfort and pleasure source.

increased by hanging out and attending same school club activities. Even though my sexual

had a crush on one particular girl, but I was too shy to express my feelings because it was not
normal for other students at my age it seemed. It seemed that I may have skipped my latency
stage or it was not noticeable. In this stage, I did not stop chewing pencil. It got worse and had to
talk to my parents about it. The conflict of sucking and biting of oral stage was resolved during my
latency phase when I was introduced to chewing gum.
Last stage, genital phase, occurs from puberty to adulthood. In this stage many things happen.
Puberty kicks in, thus change in body for reproduction occurs. Also, increase in hormonal
changes activates the sexual urges which were dormant for years. Sexual attraction and interest
of opposite sex is increased. Desire for independence is still great, but still needs supervision
from their parents. I had my first girlfriend when I was 12, before my puberty. Unfortunately, she

Symbols In The Truman Show
There are some names that have symbolism in the Truman Show that are very important to what
the show means and how we understand it. The names are Seahaven, Truman, Burbank,
Christof, Santa Maria, Simeon. Seahaven is a symbol because a sea can represent freedom in
Truman s case because he sailed to be free from the lies. A haven is a safe place. When you put
these two words together is makes Seahaven which represents a safe place to be free from the
real world and all of reality. Truman is a symbol because it is his name and it means he is a true
man. This also connects with a quote where Christof says While the world he inhabits is, in some
respects, counterfeit, there s nothing fake about Truman himself. This shows that Seahaven is fake

Who Is Man s Worst Enemy In Macbeth
Man s Worst Enemy
Annika Boehme
Ambition is like water. Humans need it to live but too little will weaken and kill you. Conversely,
too much and you ll drown. (Unknown). Ambition can drive individuals to do prodigious things.
However, when pursued with overconfidence and lust for power, ambition can lead to extreme
actions that can affect oneself and the people around them. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare
discusses the idea regarding the impact an individual s ambition has on themself and others.
Macbeth was promised or cursed by three witches that he would obtain more power and would one

order to secure that position for himself, after having been encouraged by his wife. With the

king, which drove both him and Lady Macbeth crazy as they realized their greed led to their
tragic downfall. This can be seen when Macbeth murdered his friend Banquo and his murderous
deeds came back to haunt them. Not only did these murders have a toll on Macbeth but the
weight of these murders was on Lady Macbeth as well. Following the murder of Banquo, Lady
Macbeth was found sleepwalking and trying to wash her hands of the King s blood. Lo you, here

Personal Reflection Of Journalism As An Elective Class
When I first selected Journalism as my Elective class I would be challenged in ways I had never
experienced in the conventional classroom before. After a full year of the class, I found that
while this was demonstrated to be true, the real challenge came from learning how to channel my
self motivation and intrinsic passion as opposed to external pressures like harsh due dates and
grading. I have never before in my life been given the opportunity to write about my passions and
interests for a grade, nor have I had the chance to write on behalf of a respected school institution.
My motivations in journalismwere essentially flipped from those of the conventional classroom,
where my grades are motivated by the institutional pressures of the school, and my actual learning
of the subject is motivated by my personal interest in the class. Instead in journalism, my grades
are dependent on my personal interests, and my actual learning of the subject is dependent on the
institutional pressures of working for such an esteemed organization. This has provided me with a
much more realistic educational experience, relative to the professional world, as I am motivated
internally to produce content at the job of my choice and externally to conform to the expectations
of my employer. I chose to take journalism to see if I could accountably manage my work without
many of the guidelines and structure presented in most classes, and I feel that, 12+ quality articles

PIP Assessment for Ben Hall
PIP Assessment Ben Hall
Ben Hall is believed be been born in Maitland, New South Wales on the 9th of May 1837. His
parents were both ex convicts, Eliza Somers and Benjamin Hall, who sadly passed away in 1951
which explains why he robbed many different people in New South Wales, and became one of
Australia s most wanted bushrangers that Australia has ever had, to date.
Ben then became a stockman and sold cattle to all of the miners on the diggings at Lambing Flat.
Be was known as a hard working and honest man who never gave up if e was given a task. Ben
caught wild cows and wild horses that were located in nearby hills. Ben Hall began running his
own butcher shop in 1852 in a small town near Murrurundi, but he started getting into trouble with
the local police for stealing horses and cattle. Later on in life, he got married to a lady named
Bridget Walsh in Bathurst.
In 1862, his life was then changed forever as his wife left him for another man and took their
son, Henry with her. He went back to his home to find that his farm had been burnt down along
with a large sum of his farm. He also came back to find all of his cattle and livestock dead of
starvation as they had cruelly been left in the stockyards. Hall then lost interest in cattle and saw
no need to live as he became closer to Frank Gardiner, a commonly known bushranger in the area.
He then started to get himself in to trouble with the police when he was arrested for highway

Computer Technology and its Advancement in Nursing
As nursing students, we are taught to utilize the nursing process in almost every aspect of our work.
The nursing process communicates and coordinates care with all other clinical disciplines. It assists
in coordinating discharge planning, education, teaching, and transition of care. Utilizing
informatics and healthcare technologies is one of the nursing essentials of the Master s in

A Research Study On Biotechnology Essay
The scientists who are conducting biotechnology research from the government grant like NIH,
they have to deal with the government before their research take place from thoughts to laboratory
and laboratory to in the real field. They have to prove the subject safety during each stage of the
research from pre clinical to clinical phase I to phase IV to the regulatory agencies. Biotechnology
research experts put maximum efforts to follow the regulatory mechanism than any other
technology users. There is no evidence that biotechnology carriages additional risk, but there are
uncertainties that concern the public. Biotechnology product put the same risk on subjects as the
airplane put on travellers. The cost of new biologic product development through the approval is
approximately $2.6 Billion, means $2600 million plus the cost of post marketing surveillance is
$312 million, which is many times higher than one Airbus A380 800 that cost $428 million. The
regulatory program may differ for different field of biotechnology. The plant related biotechnology
researches are rolling fast, and some potential products are in the pipeline with less requirement
comparable to animal based and human base biotechnology products. Animal related biotechnology
research has showed more complex than scientists expected, both in terms of genetics and social
issues. Most people are not worrying much about transferring genes from one plant to another plant
or transferring a one gene from bacteria

Talk Show Ellen Degeneres
When times are difficult and people feel as if there is no possible way they could ever be happy
again, one of the best ways to overcome that feeling of uselessness is by doing something you
love to do. One way some individuals believe is the best way to overcome difficult times is
through comedy. One person who believes making people laugh can help ease her pain is Ellen
Degeneres. In her talk show Ellen when she was upset about her dog being taken away from
another family, she said, I m a human being and I have bad days and I have sad days but when I
walk out here and when ya ll cheer and when you re here to dance and here to laugh and I know I
make people happy, it changes my mood. I come out here and I can do anything because of the...

She said that she found her calling when she performed a makeshift comedy routine about a person
that was telling a story while eating. Her performance at the party was noticed and she started
getting requests from local coffeehouses to perform for them as well. Ellen landed her first
solid gig in 1981 as emcee at Clyde s Comedy Corner in the French Quarter which happened to be
the only comedy club in New Orleans at the time. Her reward for her shows at the Corner...was
being named the funniest person in America in 1982 by a talent scout for the cable channel
Showtime. Degeneres first gig had made a huge impact on her comical career because soon
enough Ellen found herself touring the United States in a Winnebago bus. But being named the
Funniest person in America has its downside. One of these downsides was having people try to
humiliate you in front of a crowd. Ellen recalled a time when she was working a club and the
previous performer had turned the crowd against her before she even took the stage. The front
row was a bunch of guys who actually stood up, turned their chairs around, and faced the other
way, Degeneres said. Instead of giving up she ended up hiring an agent and then entered into a
contest at the San Francisco Comedy Festival where she came in second! Her fame kept on rising
between being called onto the Tonight Show and other talk shows. She performed for

Great Recession
During the great recession era that began in late 2007 and lasted until mid 2009, the labor
market took a major loss. The reasons that caused the labor market to plummet during this time
frame were due to unemployment, a decrease in income and lack of education. Despite the efforts
from the government to help as much as possible, the labor market had taken the worst hit and
was at its lowest since the last three decades. It is important for everyone to understand what a
weak labor market can result in. In this paper, I will discuss these findings and what impact they
had on the labor market to weaken it to such a low point. Before entering into details about these
findings, I would like to provide some information about the labor market.... Show more content on

Unemployment, the decrease in income and lack of education are all correlated with one another
and were the major things that weakened the labor market during the great recession. The lack of
education during this time resulted in many individuals to lose their jobs. Unemployment being
at all time high caused many individuals to go back to school so they could find jobs. When
people were unemployed, their household income declined as well. Inflation played a major role
in unemployment; employers could not keep workers due to the cost of business going up, so they
let go of the workers that did not have an education or low skill

  • 3. Obsession In Two Literary Works Essay Obsession is one of the greatest obstacles for mankind to overcome. In Naguib Mahfouz s Midaq Alley and Gabriel Garcia Marquez s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the motif of obsession helps to both characterize and even foreshadow the fates of the characters. Both novels illustrate that obsessions with an object or person leads to demise, but the novels differ in how they portray the effects of these obsessions on humanity. Before continuing this analysis, obsession will be clearly defined. For the purpose of this essay, obsession will be characterized by three concepts: the character is shown constantly contemplating the desired object or person, most of a character s actions or goals are oriented towards the object or person, and... This complete disregard for her promises to both Abbas and religious icons portrays Hamida s obsession with acquiring money as she consistently contemplates money, orients all of her actions around gaining money, and as she destroys religious obstacles in order to attain money. Later, Hamida s obsession with money leads her into prostitution, emotional turbulence, and misery as she undergoes a moral degradation in order to satiate her obsession. While Hamida is obsessed with financial success and the luxuries that it brings, her fiancГ© Abbas is obsessed with his love for Hamida. After the first time of being rejected by Hamida, Abbas refuses to leave her alone because he is truly in love and [feels] certain his love for her would last a thousand years (Midaq Alley, P44). Although Hamida rejects Abbas on numerous occasions, she is eventually convinced of his love as Abbas promises to work for the Army to gain enough money to give Hamida anything she desires. Once Abbas leaves for the army, Hamida looks to other men for financial stability instead of waiting for her fiancГ© to return. • 4. Communication In Aviation Essay Topic: Discuss the importance of communication in aviation and explain how misunderstandings in communication have caused aircraft accidents As the years progress, airplanes have been regarded as the handiest method to experience all the foreign nations since the 1950s. There is no denying that the impact on aviation on human history is vital. Hence, the public anticipates that the industry is approximately perfect. Nevertheless, with the collisions of the past aircraft, it is evident that misapprehending the communication between the air traffic controllers and pilots account for mortal accidents. Consequently, I am going to compare two aircraft accidents in the past and analyze how the tragedy resulted from. The Linate Airport disaster happened on October 8, 2001, miscommunication and Air Traffic Control s unawareness were the major reasons that accounted for the collision at Linate Airport which is one of the busiest airports in Milan, Italy. The runway was surrounded by dense fog, which made the visibility condensed to approximately 656 feet (200 meters). Furthermore, the meteorological condition may also have contributed to the tragedy, combined with factors such as high traffic volume. The Cessna 525A CitationJet 2, D IEVX, arrived at Milan following a flight from Cologne (KГ¶ln). Cessna 525A was to carry out a return flight to Paris Le Bourget, carrying two pilots, a Cessna s sales manager and a prospective customer. The plane arrived at 06:59 and was ... • 5. Essay Emile Durkheim and the Collective Conscience Emile Durkheim and the Collective Conscience Emile Durkheim (1858 1917) was a French sociologist who strongly influenced the discipline of sociology. It was apparent to Durkheim that since the French Revolution, the nation had been wracked by conflict and moral crisis (Stones, 2008). At the individual level, rising suicide rates reflected a growing sense of malaise. Durkheim s goal was to develop a sociologythat would help France overcome this continuing moral crisis. By tracing the influences on Durkheim to his predecessor August Comte and the German scholars of experimental psychology, it is possible to understand how Durkheim came to the conclusion that society is greater than the individual, and how his idea of a collective... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, individuals who populate any society are eminently social beings guided by moral rules. Pope and Johnson (1983) state that Durkheim proposed that society revitalizes individuals and gives them strength to persevere in the face of the vicissitudes of everyday life. Stones (2008), further states that Durkheim felt that we acquired all the best in ourselves and all the things that distinguish us from other animals from our social existence. Thought, language, world views, rationality, morality and aspirations are derived from society. Thus, the unsocialised individual, the individual divorced form society, the beast within us, is a poor approximation of the highly socialised beings that constitute societies. The importance of social factors over the individual can also be seen in Durkheim s work on suicide (Stones, 2008). Suicide was explained in terms of two independent variables, integration in society and regulation by society. Low levels of integration led to egoistic suicide, while low levels of regulation led to anomic suicide. Durkheim cited egoism and anomie as the main causes of suicide in the modern world; a world which he believed showed less interaction and people thinking more about themselves than others. As a result, people are less bound to one another, there is less community and social control is weaker (Stones, 2008). Durkheim applied his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Citizen Kane Narrative Techniques 1.)Citizen Kane is recognized as one of the greatest films made in the history of cinema, mostly due to its innovativeness. The cinematography, sound, and narrative structure cemented Citizen Kane s legacy and influenced films of all genres for years to come. James Naremore wrote an essay that described why Citizen Kanewas held up to such high regard, using examples from other scenes to highlight how the use of certain techniques help to make the film stand out. Naremore writes that Kane is important for many reasons, among them its ingenious juggling of time and perspective, its carefully designed sound track, and its influential use of wide angle, deep focus photography. (pg. 322, Naremore, Film Analysis). The film strategies that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Citizen Kane focuses on developing scenes from the protagonist s past, and how his death has affected the secondary plot of a reporter investigating his last words. The narrative strategy, in which the whole story is told in flashback from slightly different points of view (the equivalent of the unreliable narrator in fiction), was unprecedented in a Hollywood film. The technique of telling the story of Kane from multiple points of view dispels the illusion that we are learning the truth about Charles Foster Kane. As numerous commentators such as Naremore have observed, the film is like a complicated jigsaw puzzle which the viewer must piece together, bit by bit, in order to see the whole picture. Only in the final moments of the film, when we despair of ever discovering the meaning of Rosebud, does the film s narration return us to a privileged omniscient perspective, revealing the final missing piece. One scene that helps develop the unique structure is the beginning scene, with the film opening to Kane s death. Most films do not begin with the character s death, especially with a detailed scene like Citizen Kane. At the start of the film, the camera pans up and over a sign on a wire fence ... • 7. Qfd3 Case Study Qfd1 (labeled as Qbws1 on the chart) was found at River Mile 189.5 preserved between a Black Ledge lava dam remnant and a basalt flow. The base of the deposit was 110m above the current river level while the top of the deposit was 170 m above the current river level. The clasts were 92% basalt and had identical Rare earth element (REE) patterns, which indicated that they came from the same lava dam source. The clasts ranged in size from hyaloclastite ash and lapilli to a 6 m diameter limestone boulder. Based on age and pattern of REE, Qfd1 deposits seemed to have correlated with the dam produced by the Upper Prospect lava flows (Fenton et al. (2004)). While the Toroweap Dam correlated in age to Qfd1, its REE pattern did not align in a parallel... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was composed primarily of gravels, basalts, and glass. The basalts and glasses in Qfd3 did not seem to be related based on the La/Sm ratio while their Gd/Lu ratios were somewhat similar. Qfd3 deposits were complicating in correlating to a specific dam to the fact that the presence of extralocal river gravels and quartz in the lower parts of the deposition could indicate two separate flooding events. One correlation is with the Whitmore Cascade because its La/Sm and Gd/Lu was similar to the REE pattern of Qfd3 s boulders. Another idea is that the failure of the Toroweap Dam could have emplaced the existing outburst flood deposit thus explaining the presence of extralocal gravels. The hypothesis with the most consistent result is that the failure of a lava dam near the Whitmore Cascade reworked the previous Qfd3 deposit and deposited boulders and cobbles from the Whitmore Cascade on top of Qfd3 glasses. This hypothesis is consistent with the REE chart thus this explanation is seen as a strong candidate. • 8. Reconstruction During The Civil War Essay Reconstruction The United States went through many changes after the Civil War and during the Reconstruction period of 1866 1877. Before Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on December, 1863, by John Wilkes, Lincoln announced the first Reconstruction plan a year before the Civil War had ended and Lincoln offered general amnesty to white southerners who would pledge an oath of loyalty to the government and accept the abolition of slavery. During the summer of 1865, Johnson not long after he took office had revealed his plan for Reconstruction or as he preferred to call it Restoration, which reflected both his staunch Unionism and his firm belief in states rights. He offered some form of amnesty to Southerners who would take the oath of allegiance. In 1865 and 1866, under the administration of President Andrew Johnson new southern state legislatures passed restrictive black codes to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans. North outraged over these codes eroded support which led to the triumph of the more radical wing of the Republican Party and the approach known as Presidential Reconstruction. During Radical Reconstruction which began in 1866, and for the first time in American history, blacks gained a voice in government and they won elections to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces including the Ku Klux Klan would reverse the changes wrought by Radical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Story Of An Hour By Kate Chopin The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is a short story from the late nineteenth century focusing on a young woman as she reacts to a report that says her husband, on the top of the list of the report, had died in a train accident. Due to this unfortunate accident she is given the chance of freedom and Chopin s story tells that hour. The main theme to this short story one may think it relates to the saying, carpe diem , meaning to seize the day. The themes of this short story include oppression and repression. In the late nineteenth century, society wanted women to take care of their children, cook, and keep the house clean. This short story hints that Mrs. Mallard s husband was in charge of his wife. This may be ironic to one because, just by the title being stated, the story must have happened within an hour, but Kate Chopin made it seem like it lasted a couple of days. This is ironic because Mrs. Mallard only needed an hour to know that she did not need her husband anymore to be happy and live. But, it would take another wife, maybe a few years to fully recover from a spouse s death. The main irony one may see the most is in the end of the story in paragraph twenty three when Katie Chopin states …joy that kills (Chopin, 2). Jamil states Louise is the joy that she refuses to surrender, as the patriarchy would require her to do at Brently s return. But, for one climactic hour of her life, Louise does truly taste joy. (220) This is an ironic sentence at the end of the story due to the doctors believed that Mrs. Mallard was happy to see her husband alive and in one piece. The ending was very ironic because of the outcome of Mrs. Mallard. The whole story was a rising action until you got to her death at the end of the story. The author made it seem that there was so much for Mrs. Mallard to live for, but when Mrs. Mallard saw her husband, alive, there was not anything worth living for to Mrs. ... • 11. Why Same Sex Couples Should Be Allowed to Legally Marry Why Same Sex Couples Should be Allowed to Legally Marry All men were created equal. It is for this reason that gays have the same rights when it comes to housing, jobs, protection under the law, and so on, despite their difference in sexual preference. Well then, if gays have the same rights as heterosexual men and women, why can they not be legally married in the U.S? That is the question that half our country should be asking themselves, since 50% of U.S citizens oppose gay marriage. However, extraordinarily, 75% of the people in the U.S are all for gay rights (Bidstrup). But, when it comes to marriage, for one reason or another, the line is drawn. As the case with various arguments, there are all whom will take the slippery slope argument approach in their reasoning for the banning of gay marriage. A slippery slope argument is a point in which one thing happening will lead to another thing happening, triggering a domino effect of negative consequences from one single action. In this case, the argument at hand would be that along with the legalization of gay marriage comes the allowing of bestial marriage, polygamy, and many other wrongs (Bidstrup). This tactic of scaring people of accepting the beneficial consequences of one rational decision is absurd. In countries where gay marriage is legal, there has been no talk of any such changes or disgusting tendencies. In many Scandinavian countries where same sex marriages are allowed, society has remained sound (Bidstrup). If anything, marriages between criminals and those who lack morals would lead towards the anarchy that would occur with bestial marriages and polygamy. Those who have homosexual preferences do not share any of the same moral defects as do the criminals that can wed freely. Society needs to open their eyes to the normality of homosexuality and the benefits of gay marriage will be exposed. There are those who believe that gay marriage defeats the purpose of the bonding between two different gendered people in reproduction. A lot of artist from around the world visit Britain for it s thick culture in the world of art and opportunities. Almost all Minority art made in Britain falls into one of the two baskets, either it is created by an artist from an African American/ Caribbean origin, or by the common people of the Indian sub continental background. Despite of the attempts made to accumulate these two inconsequential groups together, in order to promote, what Britain still identifies as Black art , what they bring to the world of art is radically divergent, mostly because of their origin s personal crisis as well as due to their history of struggle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Otherness in the field of art in some regions is not being identified and appreciated as it should be. Fixity has now become a way of practicing culture, where racial differences in the discourse of colonialism, is a incongruous methodology of representation. Fixity gives a feeling of firmness and an unchanging order as well as disorder, immortality and daemonic repetition of racism in art naturally. Similarly, the racial and gender stereotype, that is reflected in the way of art and it s analysis, is a major rambling blueprint, in the manifestation of identification as well as of consciousness, that wavers between different opinions of what is conscientiously being repeated, always in a fixed state and something that has already been known for a long period of time. Therefore, it is the force of ambivalence that gives racial stereotype it s prevalence, and that shield s it s repeatability in changing historical events and in it s wandering case. Art is known to be region based, but a lot of artist now prefer going to a different nation and grasp a different technique and skills. According to Doyle Rice of USA Today Newspaper, California is currently in it s fourth year (2012 2015) of one of the state s worst droughts in the past century. In August of 2014, all of California was declared to be in a drought and over half of the state was in exceptional drought, the worst level (Rice). This drought has led to violent wildfires, water shortages, and potentially staggering agricultural losses. Because of the severity of the drought, the CaliforniaGovernor, Jerry Brown, declared a statewide drought emergency to reduce water usage and regulate restrictions on the use of outdoor water. One of the areas in California that would be greatly affected by the drought is the San Joaquin Valley, a place well known for it s agricultural success because of it s environment. My goal in this paper is to inform you of what the San Joaquin Valley environment is like, partially in result of the California drought, and how the valley environment is impacting the lives of the residents. The Difference Between Civil Rights And Civil Rights I noted that the U.S. civil liberties, as well as, U.S. civil rights are generally located in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, as well as, the Fourteenth Amendment. The distinction between civil liberties and civil rights is blurred since the concepts are used interchangeably, even though they refer to different kinds of guaranteed protections. Civil liberties are protections against government actions. Whereas civil rightsrefer to positive actions governments should take to create equal conditions. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw the profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her efforts to support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways she relied on to overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. Her theories about the interdependent nature of living in a democracy provided a backdrop for her educational theory. Education, she thought, needed to produce people who... In the same tone, she believed that the working class and capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character of American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the movement does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor even necessarily the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62). Addams saw the definition of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole. The literal notion of brotherhood demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger vision of life there can be no perception of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by reducing their talks to single industry issues. We are told to follow certain norms or otherwise the big guy upstairs will punish us for being disobedient . To many, believing in God is the only way to live, the reason for the way everything is, and it s the meaning to life. To others, God, is just a popular view whose existencecannot be proven. While both Atheist and Agnostics agree on the questioning of God s existence, they disagree on the reasoning of why thing are the way they are. Agnostics believe in a higher power while Atheists believe in strictly science. Both points of views made me question if science is really the only explanation for everything, how people came to believing , and the effects of believing in a higher power. Although it is true, there is no evidence to prove God s existence, why not live a good moral live regardless of the existence of a higher power or not? The main argument we are presented with is whether God exists or not. One argues that there is no evidence to prove its existence while the other one argues that we aren t capable enough to understand the philosophical mysteries of the universe. One point of view we see is an atheist. Atheists argue that there is absolutely no scientific evidence for his existence and from what they have heard the definition of God is a logical impossibility in this known universe therefore, God does not exists. • 22. The Feathers Of The Wind Feathers in the Wind I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for the final time. I attempted to gather my thoughts, but it was no use. There were no thoughts that could justify the action I needed to do. I composed myself and cocked back the lever to load my BB gun. The steel and carbonate composite that made up the gun never felt colder, even on a hot summer s day like today. The world seemed to stop spinning and there was nothing but silence. It was only myself and the task at hand. I removed my finger from the triggerguard and placed it behind the trigger itself. I closed my eyes again. I was ready to finish this. It was only an hour beforehand when I found it a little black and grey fuzzball, like something you would find when you go up to clean out your attic. I found it resting on the pavement of my driveway. It sat there baking in the hot August afternoon sun. It was just bobbing its little head around, but unable to move. I walked up to further investigate and to my unfortunate discovery, it was a small bird. It must have fallen out of the oak tree and took quite the flight down. Upon further inspection, I found that the bird had appalling injuries to its neck, head, and wing. The top of the head had a horrible gash which gave the bird the appearance of having a shaved head. It stuck out like a sore thumb. The wings were both mangled and broken. I quickly realized that this poor creature was not going to survive. I tried gathering a shoe box and feeding it and ... • 23. The Public Sphere Within Theatre The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers to the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public matters of interest and public issues. Habermas writes: the audience does not constitute a space for spectators and listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate. (Habermas in Balme 2012). The Public spherehas now become a space, a stage, for performers, speakers and protesters to have a voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the audience, spectators and listeners. Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear, conceptual boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also little doubt that the major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and migration, climate change, the erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few) have all in some way a bearing on the public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and where citizens are free to enter and engage in discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a discursive arena located outside and between state bureaucracies on the one hand and economics and business on the other, it occupies a crucial role in the functioning of so called free societies. The question to be explored here is what role theatre and performance in practice play in this realm and how performance and theatre theory can contribute to the debates. (Balme ... Under intense scrutiny and discernment it has been decided by the Supreme Court that Mr. Dred Scott has the inalienable right to be a free citizen of the United States of America. Scott is a slave, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Emerson since 1836. Scott currently resides in St. Louis, Missouri as of 1830.
