DRIVESDRIVES
 A variable-frequency drive (VFD) (also
termed adjustable-frequency drive, variable-speed drive, AC
drive, micro drive orinverter drive) is a type of adjustable-
speed drive used in electro-mechanical drive systems to
control AC motor speed andtorque by varying motor
input frequency and voltage.
 Drives are categorise into two :-
 AC DRIVES
 DC DRIVES
The first step is to convert the ac-supply voltage into dc using a
rectifier circuit. The dc power contains voltage ripples, which filter
capacitors smooth . This dc voltage then converts back into ac,
typically using pulse-width modulation . The output voltage turns
on and off at a high frequency, with the duration of on-time, or pulse
width, controlled to approximate a sinusoidal waveform.
 FEATURES
 Mains supply different from motor supply – any
combination is possible
 Synchronous motor control
 Master – slave configuration
 Multi-motor control
 UPS for control supply
 Support for standard industrial communication protocols
(Modbus, Profibus, DeviceNet, TCP/ IP etc.)
 Analog input 4 ~ 20 mA for frequency setting
 Sinusoidal multi-level PWM output waveform, no output
filter required. Can be directly connected to standard
induction motor, without damage to the insulation of the
cable or the motor, low harmonics of the motor
 ADVANTAGES
 Switching ON/Off
 FWD/ REV operations
 Speed control
 Variable acceleration deceleration options
 Variable Speed Drives are energy efficient. Efficiency of the
drives will be of the order 92-95%.
 Dynamic response of VSDs compare to dc drives leading to
better control
 Using VSDs we can get wide ranges of speed, torque and power
outputs which helps in attaining better control of the system.
Starting Currents in VSDs are less compared to conventional
dc drive system
 Efficiency of variable speed drives is improved by increase in
the power factor of the drive system
 Starting Currents in VSDs are less
 DISADVANTAGES
 Higher cost of the drive system
 Generation of Harmonic currents

 NETWORKSNETWORKS
 Network automation is the process of automating
the configuration, management and operations of
a computer network.
 Network automation is implemented through the
combination of hardware and software-based
solutions that automatically execute and manage
repetitive network environment processes.
 MODBUS:-
 Modbus is a serial communications
protocol originally published
by Modicon(now Schneider Electric) in 1979
 Modbus is a serial master/slave protocol. Modbus can run over any
serial type media (copper, fiber, wireless,
modem, etc..)
 Modbus Plus is a peer-to-peer protocol which runs at 1 MBPS. The
Modbus Plus protocol specifies the
software layer as well as the hardware layer. Proprietary
cabling and terminators must be used with aModbus Plus network.
 ModbusTCP/IP is an EtherNet based protocol. ProSoft Technology &
ModbusTCP/IP products act in a
master/slave capability.
 Modbus enables communication among many (approximately
240) devices connected to the same network, for example a
system that measures temperature and humidity and
communicates the results to a computer. Modbus is often used
to connect a supervisory computer with a remote terminal
unit (RTU) in supervisory control and data
acquisition(SCADA) systems. Many of the data types are
named from its use in driving relays: a single-bit physical
output is called a coil, and a single-bit physical input is
called a discrete input or a contact.
 There are two common types of Modbus – RTU and
TCP/IP.These are simply two different ways of
transmitting data. While Modbus defines how the data is
structured for transmission” RTU “and “TCP/IP “wrap
the structured data for specific methods of transmission.
 The main reasons for the use of Modbus in the
industrial environment are:
 developed with industrial applications in mind
 openly published and royalty-free
 easy to deploy and maintain
 moves raw bits or words without placing many
restrictions on vendors
 Simplicity
 Modbus application
 PLCs (Modicon Quantum, Momentum, Premium,
TSX Micro, Compact)
 Drives
 IP 20/IP 67 I/O
 Operator terminals
 CANopen :-
 CANopen is a communication protocol and device profile specification
for embedded systems used in automation. In terms of the OSI model,
CANopen implements the layers above and including the network layer.
The CANopen standard consists of an addressing scheme, several small
communication protocols and an application layer defined by a device
profile. The communication protocols have support for network
management, device monitoring and communication between nodes,
including a simple transport layr for message
segmentation/desegmentation. The lower level protocol implementing
the data link and physical layers is usually Controller Area Network (CAN)
 WE can describe the functionality and characteristics of a CANopen device
by means of an "Electronic Data Sheet" (EDS)
 CANopen distinguishes two basic data transmission mechanisms:-
 The access to entries of the object dictionary through "Service Data Objects"
(SDO)
 The exchange of process data through "Process Data Objects" (PDOs).
CANopen is a standardized application for distributed automation systems
based on CAN (Controller Area Network)
It offers the following performance features: -
Transmission of time-critical process data according to the producer consumer
principle
Standardized device description (data, parameters, functions, programs) in the
form of the so-called "object dictionary". Access to all "objects" of a device with
standardized transmission protocol according to the client-server principle
Standardized services for device monitoring (node guarding/heartbeat), error
signalisation (emergency messages) and network coordination ("network
management")
Standardized system services for synchronous operations (synchronization
message), central time stamp message
Standardized help functions for configuring baud rate and device
identification number via the bus
Standardized assignment pattern for message identifiers for simple system
configurations in the form of the so-called "predefined connection set“
 The recommended permissible bit rates for a CANopen
network are given as: 10 kbps, 20 kbps, 50 kbps, 125
kbps, 250 kbps, 500 kbps, 800 kbps and 1000 kbps.
 Additionally, for CANopen, two additional conditions
must be fulfilled:
 All nodes must be configured to the same bit rate and
 No node-ID may exist twice.

  • 38.  NETWORKSNETWORKS  Network automation is the process of automating the configuration, management and operations of a computer network.  Network automation is implemented through the combination of hardware and software-based solutions that automatically execute and manage repetitive network environment processes.  MODBUS:-  Modbus is a serial communications protocol originally published by Modicon(now Schneider Electric) in 1979
  • 39.  Modbus is a serial master/slave protocol. Modbus can run over any serial type media (copper, fiber, wireless, modem, etc..)  Modbus Plus is a peer-to-peer protocol which runs at 1 MBPS. The Modbus Plus protocol specifies the software layer as well as the hardware layer. Proprietary cabling and terminators must be used with aModbus Plus network.  ModbusTCP/IP is an EtherNet based protocol. ProSoft Technology & ModbusTCP/IP products act in a master/slave capability.
  • 40.  Modbus enables communication among many (approximately 240) devices connected to the same network, for example a system that measures temperature and humidity and communicates the results to a computer. Modbus is often used to connect a supervisory computer with a remote terminal unit (RTU) in supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA) systems. Many of the data types are named from its use in driving relays: a single-bit physical output is called a coil, and a single-bit physical input is called a discrete input or a contact.  There are two common types of Modbus – RTU and TCP/IP.These are simply two different ways of transmitting data. While Modbus defines how the data is structured for transmission” RTU “and “TCP/IP “wrap the structured data for specific methods of transmission.
  • 41.  The main reasons for the use of Modbus in the industrial environment are:  developed with industrial applications in mind  openly published and royalty-free  easy to deploy and maintain  moves raw bits or words without placing many restrictions on vendors  Simplicity  Modbus application  PLCs (Modicon Quantum, Momentum, Premium, TSX Micro, Compact)  Drives  IP 20/IP 67 I/O  Operator terminals
  • 42.  CANopen :-  CANopen is a communication protocol and device profile specification for embedded systems used in automation. In terms of the OSI model, CANopen implements the layers above and including the network layer. The CANopen standard consists of an addressing scheme, several small communication protocols and an application layer defined by a device profile. The communication protocols have support for network management, device monitoring and communication between nodes, including a simple transport layr for message segmentation/desegmentation. The lower level protocol implementing the data link and physical layers is usually Controller Area Network (CAN)  WE can describe the functionality and characteristics of a CANopen device by means of an "Electronic Data Sheet" (EDS)  CANopen distinguishes two basic data transmission mechanisms:-  The access to entries of the object dictionary through "Service Data Objects" (SDO)  The exchange of process data through "Process Data Objects" (PDOs).
  • 43. CANopen is a standardized application for distributed automation systems based on CAN (Controller Area Network) It offers the following performance features: - Transmission of time-critical process data according to the producer consumer principle Standardized device description (data, parameters, functions, programs) in the form of the so-called "object dictionary". Access to all "objects" of a device with standardized transmission protocol according to the client-server principle Standardized services for device monitoring (node guarding/heartbeat), error signalisation (emergency messages) and network coordination ("network management") Standardized system services for synchronous operations (synchronization message), central time stamp message Standardized help functions for configuring baud rate and device identification number via the bus Standardized assignment pattern for message identifiers for simple system configurations in the form of the so-called "predefined connection set“
  • 44.  The recommended permissible bit rates for a CANopen network are given as: 10 kbps, 20 kbps, 50 kbps, 125 kbps, 250 kbps, 500 kbps, 800 kbps and 1000 kbps.  Additionally, for CANopen, two additional conditions must be fulfilled:  All nodes must be configured to the same bit rate and  No node-ID may exist twice.
