Mind maps are diagrams that visually organize information around a central concept. They were popularized by psychologist Tony Buzan in the 1970s as an effective study tool. Mind maps use images, colors, and branches to radiate key words and ideas from a central image. Guidelines recommend starting with a central topic in multiple colors and connecting branches of keywords on individual lines. Mind maps can be used for generating, visualizing, structuring, and classifying ideas for tasks like studying, problem-solving, decision making, note-taking, and brainstorming in personal, education, business and other contexts. Research found mind maps may be particularly effective for lower ability students compared to other study methods.
