COMMUNICATION
INTRODUCTION
• October, 1957: Soviets launch first artificial satellite into Earth orbit. Fifty years ago, on
October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made satellite,
shocking the American public and beginning the Space Age. People had been dreaming
of space travel for some time before the launch of Sputnik.
DEFINITION
• A communication satellite is an artificial satellite that transmits the
signal via a transponder by creating a channel between the transmitter
and the receiver at different Earth locations. Telephone, radio, television,
internet, and military applications use satellite communications.
• For example, Earth is a satellite because it orbits the sun. Likewise, the
moon is a satellite because it orbits Earth. Usually, the word “satellite”
refers to a machine that is launched into space and moves around Earth
or another body in space.
HOW
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION WORKS
• Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the
antennas on the Earth. The antennas then capture those signals and
process the information coming from those signals.
WORKING :
1. An uplink Earth station or other ground equipment transmits the
desired signal to the satellite.
2. The satellite amplifies the incoming signal and changes the
frequency.
3. The satellite transmits the signal back to Earth.
4. The ground equipment receives the signal.

There are so many types of satellites like: Communication Satellites, Earth
Observation Satellites, Navigation satellites, scientific & Exploration
satellites, experimental satellites, small satellites etc.
Types of Satellite Systems :
• GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) at about 36,000km above the earth’s
surface.
• LEO (Low Earth Orbit) at about 500-1500km above the earth’s surface.
• MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) or ICO (Intermediate Circular Orbit) at about
6000-20,000 km above the earth’s surface.
• HEO (Highly Elliptical Orbit)

• Digital cinema.
• Radio broadcasting.
• Amateur radio.
• Internet access.
• Military.
• Disaster Management
• Used in GPS (Global Positioning System)
• Weather forecasting system
• Navigation
• broadcasting
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT IN
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
• The cover image displays the Earth with stylized representation of multiple
orbiting satellites. There are almost 5,500 active satellites in orbit as of spring
2022, and one estimate predicts the launch of an additional 58,000 by 2030.

• Decrease the signal traveling in the outer space
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Voyager 1 is the first human-made object to venture into interstellar space.
Voyager 1 discovered a thin ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons:
Thebe and Metis. At Saturn, Voyager 1 found five new moons and a new ring
called the G-ring.
• 14.6 billion miles (23.3 billion kilometers)
• It’s receiving and executing commands from Earth,
