Connecting College Faculty to Open Content Repositories: Challenges and Oppor...Tom Caswell
This presentation will describe the Open Course Library, an ongoing project to redesign Washington's 81 highest enrolling college courses as open educational resources. During this multi-‐year effort, faculty members from the Washington state colleges are creating openly licensed courses using their existing learning management system. These courses will be shared within the 34-‐college system using a Creative Commons CC-‐BY license. I will discuss opportunities and challenges we have faces in this ongoing effort. Participants will recognize the role of faculty technology resource centers in many university Open Courseware operations, will understand the need for a simpler, more sustainable approach to creating open educational resources in Washington's community college system, will learn how faculty are using their existing LMS tool to create open educational resources in the Open Course Library project, and will consider the implications of increased use and remixing of open learning resources and the need for tools that make this easier for faculty.

In an effort to improve the quantity and quality of online and blended courses taught at Purdue University North Central, a new program was put into place in fall 2014. Based on research in the value of peer mentoring in academic settings, a group of faculty mentors with extensive experience teaching with technology were paired with others who are just getting started. This presentation will describe the program structure, as well as the successes and challenges of the program from the faculty point of view, in order to assist other institutions in exploring similar models for improved faculty development.

What recommendations exist for reinforcing academic integrity and providing meaningful feedback? This online discussion to shared tips and best practices for assessing student learning using Blackboard.
Questions that should be asked for online delivery classes are: Is the instructor using online exemplary practices? Is the instructor qualified to teach online? Methods that could be used on a voluntary basis to answer these questions will be discussed.

Abstract:
Participate in the development of a research model to support the National DETA Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Extended Abstract
Come help us develop a research model to facilitate cross institutional research on blended instruction. The future of blended learning should be driven by research-based instructional and institutional interventions as the result of cross institutional research impacting access, learning effectiveness, and student satisfaction.
To give you a little background, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will share their efforts in the establishment of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. They seek to foster student access and success through evidence-based, cross-institutional online learning practices and technologies. Specifically, DETA looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in blended and online learning, including competency-based education, for underrepresented populations through rigorous research.
This workshop looks to engage the blended learning community in assisting of the development of DETA's research agenda, including a research model for distance education and research toolkits that can be used by institutions across the country. Through collaborative group discussions, this workshop will look for participants to brainstorm and prioritize ideas around defining student success, identifying key research questions to drive future research, development of shared measures to be gathered by different institutions, creation of instrumentation, and more. The outcomes of this workshop will inform research conducted in 2016. Further, opportunities for community engagement, including funding to conduct cross-institutional research, will be discussed.
