This document discusses assessments for 21st century students and the North Carolina Virtual Public School's (NCVPS) approach. It outlines that NCVPS uses formative, bi-weekly assessments aligned to learning goals to provide real-time feedback. Teachers analyze assessment data using five questions to inform instructional next steps. A variety of assessment tools and face-to-face methods are employed to evaluate student learning and reduce plagiarism. The High Five team will support the assessment process by setting data discussion days, including assessment strategies in course guides, collaborating on best practices, and making recommendations for Fall 2008 and beyond.

The authors have proposed the development and validation of curricular and educational materials to support graduate and undergraduate education in digital librarianship. Several curriculum modules have now been developed. Experts in digital librarianship and digital library education have reviewed each. Further validation of these modules will be obtained through this evaluation study, prior to their widespread dissemination.

Implementing and utilizing personal learning environments (PLEs) in educational settings is a challenging and complex process that requires the intensive involvement of both teachers and students. There are several important issues that need to be considered in order to build PLEs and utilize them as effective learning tools in educational settings. Among other issues, the implementation of PLEs in a way that can support the student’s control and improve the teacher’s practices is a key factor affecting the adoption of them by students and teachers. In this paper, we propose a framework for developing PLEs in educational settings in order to support teachers and students to negotiate control and then analyze the perceptions of teachers regarding the impact of the framework on their teaching practices.
Engineering Success in Research-led TeachingGary Wood
This presentation illustrates the power of research-led learning experiences in encouraging students to engage more deeply with their subject discipline, by presenting a module in which students research and develop assistive technologies for older people. Such projects have value for all students, because they demand and develop their capabilities in problem enquiry and response; creativity and innovation; calculated risk-taking; decision making that leads to taking action; and working collaboratively. In short, research-led teaching develops students' enterprise capabilities. That is, it enables them to spot opportunities and respond to them by having ideas and making those ideas happen. We will show that this approach inspires students to succeed, whilst at the same time equipping them with skills that complement their subject knowledge and make them highly effective students and graduates, prepared to face the challenges of progressing through their degree programme and transitioning into the world of work.

A Guide to Curriculum and Accreditation Mapping Using Examsoft Categories and...ExamSoft

A public university nursing program was searching for a method of tracking student outcomes across multiple levels from exam questions through national accreditation standards. The program chose ExamSoft as the vendor to provide secured testing and assist in categorizing and documenting compliance with standards. The Categories feature offers users the ability to close the loop on accreditation standards and outcome documentation. During the implementation process, several solutions were identified while some challenges remain. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the faculty development team’s experience with creating, tagging and verifying outcomes and accreditation standards using the ExamSoft Categories feature. Additionally the process for using the Categories feature in ExamSoft to comply with standards across all levels of curriculum mapping will be demonstrated. The information in this presentation can be applied by any program seeking an efficient method of mapping the relationship between exam questions and accreditation.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Design categories specific to individual program needs
2) Construct a plan to implement the use of categories in their programs
3) Demonstrate how to create category folders in exam-soft for unique accreditation standards and course outcomes.
4) Construct an exam blue print using the categories feature in exam-soft

Districts have an abundance of data but often do not know how or when to use it. Take an inventory of your existing assessments, decide if they are being used correctly and then eliminate overlaps and fill in gaps. Now you are ready to develop an assessment plan based on need.

In the summer of 2006 teams of teachers using feedback from previous curriculum guides, plus delta feedback, the NCSCOS, and years of experience at using language arts guides met for the purpose of developing a language arts instruction guide that would provide the best guide possible for the continuous improvement of instruction in Iredell-Statesville Schools. The area Executive Directors and related support areas were responsible for leading lead teachers and classroom teachers through this process. Similar teams met in math, writing, science and EOC and Honors courses with the same processes and charges for improvement of instruction. The degree to which the work has been accomplished is in direct correlation with the needs expressed at each level. (Ex: Elementary is language arts, math, science. High school is all core EOC courses).
