INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC
Multi Modal Transport Operator’s Act 1993 was a
positive sign for economic development, and
initiatives of Indian Transport Operators, but India
still is still a matter of concern.
Challenges faced:
1. Fuel prices are highest in the Globe,
2. Poor warehouses and roads,
3. Connectivity and Integration between transport
means,
4. Shortage of professionals/ experts,
5. Complicated documentation/ rules and regulations.
INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC
“Multi Modal Transport System refers usually for
International Transaction, signed under a single
contract, where the sole responsibility with regard to
safe, timely delivery of the product lays with the
transporter, from the point of dispatch/ origin, to the
point of delivery/ destination, which also includes
Transit Documentation, Legal norms and currencies,
Transshipment, Multi-Means of Transport, Handling
of Goods, Goods Tracking, Goods Clearance at
various transit points, Goods Insurance and finally
timely delivery of goods in safe and good
condition”.
(It’s a self definition)
INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC
“Multi Modal Transport System, is still a growing
topic for the following reasons:
1. India lacks professional transport operators,
2. MTO Act was first passed in 1993, but got its first
insurance after formation of IFFCO-TOKIO in Dec
2000,
3. India still has shortage of warehouses,
4. India still is far from good roads,
5. Integration between means of transport is still a
growing subject matter and so on.
“India needs to develop MMTS in domestic market,
therefore to tap the international market”.
CURRENT ISSUES AND TRENDS
 MMTS concept is common only in large scale industries, where
products are moving in bulk like Cement, Raw Materials like Ore,
Iron and Steel and so on.
 MMTS is uncommon with medium and small scale industries and
small transport operators due to the fear of damages and lost of
goods.
 Bengaluru in particular has proper connectivity, by Road, Rail,
Pipe, Air and Water ways, but freight is not uniform,
 Bengaluru is still a developing destination for transshipment
operations.
 ‘Make in India’ is our dream, but ‘FUEL COST’ is one of the
serious matter, every investor wants to discuss.
 Attracting more entrepreneurs, both domestic and international
requires a effective logistics system/ better infrastructure.
 Tackling Rain or Sun Heat is still a matter of concern. (POOR
INFRASTRUCTURE).
How is it addressed in literature?
 Some articles were referred.
 The source were from Google Scholar,
Science Direct, EBSCO, Emerald….
 Most of the articles are based on ‘Shortest
Distance’ or ‘Tracking the consignments’
and usually international.
(India needs to strengthen its domestic market)
 The articles I went through include:
How is it addressed in literature?
1. Sunil (Jan 2016) of Mumbai Railway

4. Constantinou, (Mar 2014) describes the research
methodology and design of electronic resources in support
of the graduate program in International Transportation
Management at SUNY Maritime College. A team of faculty
librarians have designed the online research guides to meet
the requirements of the graduate students at the final stages
of completing their Master of Science in international
transportation management.
The SUNY Maritime College graduate students are required
to conduct a final research assignment in global business
and transportation, global statistics; foreign labour markets;
foreign trade policies; and cultural, economic, and political
contexts of supply chain management..

5. Jiang (2007) in his article focuses on the
concept of ubiquitous logistics and discusses the
possible opportunities that are brought about by
implementing U-Logistics in the logistics industry
in China. In order to implement the U-Logistics
in China step-by-step, the implementation
procedure is designed from the surface and point
aspect.
How is it addressed in literature?
6. Daniel and White, in their Article focuses
on a study related to the Delphi technique.
While the concept of supply or value chains
is well known, in order to perform
effectively in such increasingly demanding
environments, it is considered that
organisations should form linkages with a
wider number and type of organisations, and
for a wider range of activities, such as
trading, outsourcing and collaboration.

7. According to Yu Yi and Liu Xin-Liang, the
cluster analysis of the logistics demand points, it
can help logistics conveniently select reasonable
logistics distribution centre, then to reduce their
transportation costs, and improve transport
efficiency. This thesis firstly introduces the CURE
algorithm and UFLP model, then, proposes an
improved algorithm based on CURE, and describes
the specific process. Finally, it also proves the
algorithm's effectiveness and superiority for
choosing Logistics Centre based on the numerical
experiments..

8. Shih-Miao Chin, Ho-Ling Hwang and Peterson
Bruce, in their paper highlights geo-spatial science-
related innovations and developments conducted by the
Center for Transportation Analysis (CTA) at the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. The researchers have been
developing integrated inter-modal transportation
solutions through innovative and cost-effective research
and development for many years. Examples of these GIS-
related products include: the CTA (Center for
Transportation Analysis) Transportation Networks; Geo
Freight system; and the Web-based Multi-Modal Routing
Analysis System. In addition, an application on
assessment of railroad hazmat routing alternatives is also
discussed..

 9. Sendra Salcedo and Cairo Battistuti, have stated that in Mexico City
there are 12 subway lines and over 350 bus lines that do more than 12
million trips daily. All this lines are unscheduled and information about their
stations location is limited. Only expert public transport users have enough
knowledge to choose a fast rout to their destination using this transport
system. The city transport system is a big maze for users; this situation
makes inexpert users avoid public transport services, preferring taxis or their
own car. In an environment so full of uncertainty, how can users choose the
fastest route to their destinations? This paper tackles the unscheduled public
transport fastest route search problem in Mexico City proposing as solution
a Public Transport Navigation System (PTNS).

 9B. Sendra Salcedo and Cairo Battistuti, (Contd.. From Page 1)
 Although solutions for minimum delay rout search problems have been widely studied, and
many algorithms have been created, Mexico City public transport data is highly variable and
uncertain making impossible to implement any of them, therefore the necessity of finding a
solution not based on the public transports uncertain data but in their users knowledge. The
system developed in this work finds fast routs to a destination in public transport by using a
search algorithm with knowledge based time dependent heuristic. The proposed heuristic aims
to capture the knowledge of public transport expert users and combine it with data given by
transport companies to calculate the fastest routes available. The heuristic considers the
transport line´s speed, waiting time and the trail distance. These factors make the heuristic
search algorithm produce routes that are faster than the ones considered by any public
transport user. The heuristic is a time dependent function and therefore the Estimated Time of
Arrival (ETA) generated is precise. Test were made comparing trip times of persons with and
without the PTNS (Public Transport Navigation System) installed in their mobile devices. The
results showed that persons that followed the PTNS (Public Transport Navigation System)
suggested rout had significantly shorter trip time than the ones who did not use the system..

10. Chowharry, Choy, Lee and Lam has expressed
information on Knowledge and Analytical-based
Intelligent System (KAIS) to support daily operations.
Numerous technologies and logistics information systems
are used by various logistics service companies for
customizing logistics management. KAIS embeds the
information communication and decision support
technology. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Case-
Based Reasoning (CBR) and portal technologies are
combined to develop KAIS. The overall logistics service
quality and customer satisfaction level is significantly
improved in Eastern Logistics by using Knowledge and
Analytical-based Intelligent System (KAIS)..
How is it addressed in literature?
11. Liu, Honglu and Hua, Guowei, in their article,
“An introduction is presented in which the editor
discusses various articles within the issue on topics
including information technology in logistics, an
evolution model for electronic commerce (e-
commerce) markets and a loan default
discrimination model”.
How is it addressed in literature?
13. Judt, Tony presented, an essay on the use of
railway system. It offers the history of railway
system that was born during the industrial
revolution. The author states that challenges in
terms of industrial modernity including long-
distance telegraphic communication, harnessing of
water, as well as urban and rural drainage was first
succeeded by railway companies. It also examines
the design and construction of railway stations that
served as a travel adventure of archetypical
modern experience.
PROPOSED WORK ON CONTRIBUTION PLANNED
1. It would be proposed, to gather data (Information)
through a structured questionnaire (Delphi Method)
from the Industry Experts.
2. The questionnaire may emphasize only to:
a. Industrialists who dispatch bulk goods > 500
Kilometers, in Bengaluru to Kolkata route.,
b. Multi Modal Transport Operators in this route –
Railways, Roadways, Airways in particular,
c. Identify possible transshipment points and
warehousing in this route.
PROPOSED WORK ON CONTRIBUTION PLANNED
The proposal is limited to only one route, Ex-
Bengaluru to Kolkata, due to the following:
1. Distance: Longer distance can have more
possibilities for more respondents, (Approx.1900
Kms)
2. Key Business Cities: Both Bengaluru and Kolkata,
3. Connectivity: Both cities are connected by Air, Road
and Rail. (Kolkata even by Water)
4. Transshipment Points: Ichapuram and Hyderabad
are the possible transshipment points, (Two possible
transshipment points)
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH
 Application of MMTS across the country,
 MMTS for transport reforms,
 MMTS strengthens the economy and industry,
 MMTS can strengthen our warehouses,
 Logistics is the backbone for economic
development,
 Every transport mode and every manufacturer, will
get opportunity and so on…

  • 2. RESEARCH TOPIC “A Study on the effectiveness of Multi-Model Transport System for Logistics Solutions, with reference to Ex- Bengaluru to Kolkata” – An Applied Research.
  • 3. RESEARCH TOPIC Proposed Respondents: Bulk Transport Contractors and Bulk Product Manufacturers, who ship consignments, Ex-Bengaluru to Kolkata and Ex-Kolkata to Bengaluru. Fundamental Study: 1. Effectiveness in compared to the existing ‘Uni- Model Transport System’. 2. Effective Logistics for economic development.
  • 4. MOTIVATION OF THE WORK PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE:  Possess some experience,  Exposure in the profession in domestic movements,  Possess contacts with the operative heads in the industry.  Effective logistics is a need, for economical development.  It can support the industry as a whole.  ‘Make in India’, too one of the stimulator.
  • 5. MOTIVATION OF THE WORK 1. Practically Application : Spiderman courier service Ex-ITC, Munger to VST, Hyderabad also at AST Ltd in transportation Ex-AAL, Mysuru to JDF, Jabalpur/ Telco, Jamshedpur).& 2. Company at risk: AST Ltd – ITC’s imported vessel shipment Ex-Chennai Port to ITC Bengaluru, 3. Company suffered: ABC India Ltd’s - Transport and installation of Mahatma Buddha Statue at Husain Sagar Lake, Hyderabad & AST’s - Transportation of thin steel sheets – Imported consignment from Mumbai Harbour to Am Tech Packs Ltd, Mysuru.
  • 6. INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC Multi Modal Transport Operator’s Act 1993 was a positive sign for economic development, and initiatives of Indian Transport Operators, but India still is still a matter of concern. Challenges faced: 1. Fuel prices are highest in the Globe, 2. Poor warehouses and roads, 3. Connectivity and Integration between transport means, 4. Shortage of professionals/ experts, 5. Complicated documentation/ rules and regulations.
  • 7. INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC “Multi Modal Transport System refers usually for International Transaction, signed under a single contract, where the sole responsibility with regard to safe, timely delivery of the product lays with the transporter, from the point of dispatch/ origin, to the point of delivery/ destination, which also includes Transit Documentation, Legal norms and currencies, Transshipment, Multi-Means of Transport, Handling of Goods, Goods Tracking, Goods Clearance at various transit points, Goods Insurance and finally timely delivery of goods in safe and good condition”. (It’s a self definition)
  • 8. INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH TOPIC “Multi Modal Transport System, is still a growing topic for the following reasons: 1. India lacks professional transport operators, 2. MTO Act was first passed in 1993, but got its first insurance after formation of IFFCO-TOKIO in Dec 2000, 3. India still has shortage of warehouses, 4. India still is far from good roads, 5. Integration between means of transport is still a growing subject matter and so on. “India needs to develop MMTS in domestic market, therefore to tap the international market”.
  • 9. CURRENT ISSUES AND TRENDS  MMTS concept is common only in large scale industries, where products are moving in bulk like Cement, Raw Materials like Ore, Iron and Steel and so on.  MMTS is uncommon with medium and small scale industries and small transport operators due to the fear of damages and lost of goods.  Bengaluru in particular has proper connectivity, by Road, Rail, Pipe, Air and Water ways, but freight is not uniform,  Bengaluru is still a developing destination for transshipment operations.  ‘Make in India’ is our dream, but ‘FUEL COST’ is one of the serious matter, every investor wants to discuss.  Attracting more entrepreneurs, both domestic and international requires a effective logistics system/ better infrastructure.  Tackling Rain or Sun Heat is still a matter of concern. (POOR INFRASTRUCTURE).
  • 10. How is it addressed in literature?  Some articles were referred.  The source were from Google Scholar, Science Direct, EBSCO, Emerald….  Most of the articles are based on ‘Shortest Distance’ or ‘Tracking the consignments’ and usually international. (India needs to strengthen its domestic market)  The articles I went through include:
  • 11. How is it addressed in literature? 1. Sunil (Jan 2016) of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, in his project, ‘Multi- Modal Integration of bus service with sub-urban trains of Mira-Bhayandar, says on Rail-Road integration to rationalize bus service to sub-urban trains.
  • 12. How is it addressed in literature? 2. Nisha (March 2016), in her paper ‘An Analysis of Nepal’s transit through India’, (Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations) says on legal instruments of countries, documentation, transshipment procedures, arbitrary bank guarantee and infrastructure. Along with the relevance of WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement. She recommends improving transit and revise the prevailing treaties as per international standards.
  • 13. How is it addressed in literature? 3. Vivek (Jan 2016), Hony Secretary, Association of Multi Modal Transport operators of India, says positive on Multi Modal Transport System due to the passing of Multi Modal Transport Act 1993, in the parliament. He says on its potentials and revenue generations by 2020 and the role of Information Technology in integrating and collaborating the experts in the field.
  • 14. How is it addressed in literature? 4. Constantinou, (Mar 2014) describes the research methodology and design of electronic resources in support of the graduate program in International Transportation Management at SUNY Maritime College. A team of faculty librarians have designed the online research guides to meet the requirements of the graduate students at the final stages of completing their Master of Science in international transportation management. The SUNY Maritime College graduate students are required to conduct a final research assignment in global business and transportation, global statistics; foreign labour markets; foreign trade policies; and cultural, economic, and political contexts of supply chain management..
  • 15. How is it addressed in literature? 5. Jiang (2007) in his article focuses on the concept of ubiquitous logistics and discusses the possible opportunities that are brought about by implementing U-Logistics in the logistics industry in China. In order to implement the U-Logistics in China step-by-step, the implementation procedure is designed from the surface and point aspect.
  • 16. How is it addressed in literature? 6. Daniel and White, in their Article focuses on a study related to the Delphi technique. While the concept of supply or value chains is well known, in order to perform effectively in such increasingly demanding environments, it is considered that organisations should form linkages with a wider number and type of organisations, and for a wider range of activities, such as trading, outsourcing and collaboration.
  • 17. How is it addressed in literature? 7. According to Yu Yi and Liu Xin-Liang, the cluster analysis of the logistics demand points, it can help logistics conveniently select reasonable logistics distribution centre, then to reduce their transportation costs, and improve transport efficiency. This thesis firstly introduces the CURE algorithm and UFLP model, then, proposes an improved algorithm based on CURE, and describes the specific process. Finally, it also proves the algorithm's effectiveness and superiority for choosing Logistics Centre based on the numerical experiments..
  • 18. How is it addressed in literature? 8. Shih-Miao Chin, Ho-Ling Hwang and Peterson Bruce, in their paper highlights geo-spatial science- related innovations and developments conducted by the Center for Transportation Analysis (CTA) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The researchers have been developing integrated inter-modal transportation solutions through innovative and cost-effective research and development for many years. Examples of these GIS- related products include: the CTA (Center for Transportation Analysis) Transportation Networks; Geo Freight system; and the Web-based Multi-Modal Routing Analysis System. In addition, an application on assessment of railroad hazmat routing alternatives is also discussed..
  • 19. How is it addressed in literature?  9. Sendra Salcedo and Cairo Battistuti, have stated that in Mexico City there are 12 subway lines and over 350 bus lines that do more than 12 million trips daily. All this lines are unscheduled and information about their stations location is limited. Only expert public transport users have enough knowledge to choose a fast rout to their destination using this transport system. The city transport system is a big maze for users; this situation makes inexpert users avoid public transport services, preferring taxis or their own car. In an environment so full of uncertainty, how can users choose the fastest route to their destinations? This paper tackles the unscheduled public transport fastest route search problem in Mexico City proposing as solution a Public Transport Navigation System (PTNS).  Contd.... 2
  • 20. How is it addressed in literature?  9B. Sendra Salcedo and Cairo Battistuti, (Contd.. From Page 1)  Although solutions for minimum delay rout search problems have been widely studied, and many algorithms have been created, Mexico City public transport data is highly variable and uncertain making impossible to implement any of them, therefore the necessity of finding a solution not based on the public transports uncertain data but in their users knowledge. The system developed in this work finds fast routs to a destination in public transport by using a search algorithm with knowledge based time dependent heuristic. The proposed heuristic aims to capture the knowledge of public transport expert users and combine it with data given by transport companies to calculate the fastest routes available. The heuristic considers the transport line´s speed, waiting time and the trail distance. These factors make the heuristic search algorithm produce routes that are faster than the ones considered by any public transport user. The heuristic is a time dependent function and therefore the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) generated is precise. Test were made comparing trip times of persons with and without the PTNS (Public Transport Navigation System) installed in their mobile devices. The results showed that persons that followed the PTNS (Public Transport Navigation System) suggested rout had significantly shorter trip time than the ones who did not use the system..
  • 21. How is it addressed in literature? 10. Chowharry, Choy, Lee and Lam has expressed information on Knowledge and Analytical-based Intelligent System (KAIS) to support daily operations. Numerous technologies and logistics information systems are used by various logistics service companies for customizing logistics management. KAIS embeds the information communication and decision support technology. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Case- Based Reasoning (CBR) and portal technologies are combined to develop KAIS. The overall logistics service quality and customer satisfaction level is significantly improved in Eastern Logistics by using Knowledge and Analytical-based Intelligent System (KAIS)..
  • 22. How is it addressed in literature? 11. Liu, Honglu and Hua, Guowei, in their article, “An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses various articles within the issue on topics including information technology in logistics, an evolution model for electronic commerce (e- commerce) markets and a loan default discrimination model”.
  • 23. How is it addressed in literature? 13. Judt, Tony presented, an essay on the use of railway system. It offers the history of railway system that was born during the industrial revolution. The author states that challenges in terms of industrial modernity including long- distance telegraphic communication, harnessing of water, as well as urban and rural drainage was first succeeded by railway companies. It also examines the design and construction of railway stations that served as a travel adventure of archetypical modern experience.
