SAP Business Warehouse
By: Sanjeet Kumar
Overview:
During all business activities, companies create data. In all areas
of the company, employees use this data as a basis for making
decisions.
SAP NetWeaver BW allows you to group together and format
large amounts of business data in an Enterprise Data
Warehouse.
 By analyzing the data with the BI tools in SAP BEx, supported
by Enterprise Planning tools, you can find important
information to support the decision-making process in your
company.

Difference Between SAP R/3 and BW
The transaction-orientated OLTP and the analysis orientated OLAP environment
must be considered as a single entity. The data for the business processes
produces a multitude of information that can not easily be used for targeted
analysis. Therefore, the data is firstly cleansed, then technically and semantically
prepared.

Data Basis
Additional heterogeneous data can be loaded via extractors:
. Flat files: A flat file in ASCII or CSV format can automatically be read by
the SAP BW standard.
XML: XML data can also be processed in SAP BW.
Data Staging Tools
. DB Connect: Allows relational databases to be accessed directly. Here, SAP
DB Multi Connect is used to create a connection to the database management
system (DBMS) in the external database
ETL tools: In heterogeneous system landscapes, an important requirement is
that the different data structures and content are consolidated before being
loaded into SAP BW. You can use an ETL tool to load data from heterogeneous
systems, such as Siebel and PeopleSoft, transform this data into a single
format and then load it via a Business Programming Interface into SAP BW.
. UD Connect: Using UD Connect, you can access just about all relational
and multi-dimensional data sources. UD Connect transfers the data as flat
data. Multi-dimensional data is converted to a flat format when UD Connect
is used.

SAP BW Business Explorer
The Business Explorer (BEx) is a SAP BW component that provides flexible
reporting and analysis tools that you can use for strategic analysis and supporting
the decision-making process in your organization.
These tools include query, reporting and OLAP functions. The BEx enables a
broad range of users to access SAP BW information: Using the Enterprise Portal,
Intranet/Internet (Web Application Design) or using mobile end devices (WAP or i-
mode enabled mobile telephones, and personal digital assistants).

The SAP BW Star Schema Concept
This database schema classifies two groups of data: facts (sales or quantity, for
example) and dimension attributes(customer, material, time, for example). Facts
are the focus of the analysis of a business. activities. The fact data (values for the
facts) are stored in a highly normalized fact table. The values of the dimension
attributes are stored in various denormalized dimension tables (from a
semantical point of view: dimensions): Here, logically related dimension attributes
are stored as a hierarchy(parent-child relationships) within the dimension table. The
dimension tables are linked relationally with the central fact table by way of foreign
or primary key relationships. The dimensional attribute with the finest level of detail
of the corresponding dimension table is a foreign key in the fact table. In this way,
all data records in the fact table can be identified uniquely.

Basic Cube
Basic Cubes are the central objects of the multi-dimensional model in SAP BW.
Reports and analyses are based on these. From a reporting perspective, a Basic
Cube describes a self-contained data set within a business area, for which you can
define queries. A Basic Cube consists of a quantity of relational tables arranged
multi-dimensionally, meaning that it consists of a central fact table
surrounded by several dimension tables. SID tables link these dimension
tables to their respective master data tables.

Master Data Tables/SID Tables
Additional information about characteristics is referred to as master data in the
SAP BW system. A distinction is made between the following master data types:
Attributes
Texts
(External) Hierarchies
Master data information is stored in separate tables, that is independent of
the dimension tables, in what are called master data tables (separately for
attributes, texts and hierarchies).

Advantages of the SAP BW Star Schema
GHCL Limited
 Advantages:
The use of automatically generated INT4 keys I (SID keys, DIMID
keys) enables faster access to data than via long alpha-numeric keys.
Thanks to the excavation of master data from the dimension tables
using the SID technique, the following modeling possibilities exist :
Historizing dimensions
Multi-lingual capability
Cross-Basis Cube use of master data ( shared dimensions.)→
The query performance is improved here as aggregated key figures
can be stored in their own fact tables.

Info Objects
Info Objects contain the technical and specialist information for master and transaction data in SAP BW. These
enable information to be modelled in a structured form in SAP BW.
Info Objects are used for the definition of reports, to evaluate master- and transaction data.

Advantages:
GHCL Limited
 Cross-Application Visibility into Business Process Performance.
We can pull data from various SAP Applications.
 Permanent data storage
SAP BW data warehouse is an excellent way to store after transactional data generation.
 Improved Customer Service Levels.  Lose baggage a lot.  Not sure why or how.  A data
warehouse is an excellent detective tool.
 Increased Capacity Utilization Rates.
You are going to need a data warehouse to attack all the elements of the problem.
 Proactive Decision Making  Enabled by Real-Time Data.
SAP BW can be a much effective in Real Time reporting and decision making.
 Configuration problems with SAP R/3 get Surfaced Quickly.
Already Runs a Retail Operation, T-mobiles .
 Marketing, Sales & Operations Planning Work Better with Better Data.
Forecast accuracy can be done.
 Bad data is Quickly Identified by SAP BW.
Loss every year due to bad data, this is really one of the top benefits of SAP BW.
