o Sand mining is a
practice that is used to
extract sand.
o Sand
is mined from beaches,
and from ocean beds
and river beds.
o It is often used in
manufacturing cement.

4. What are Illegal Sand Mining Activities?
 Illegal mining has been going on at various locations in
India today.
 The Thekedaars or Contractors forcefully seize the sand
and auction it at two to five times the government rate.
These people are called as SAND MAFIAS.
 Even when the sand is not auctioned to them, they lift it
and sell it for huge profits.
 They also collect illegal taxes from the fishermen.

6. 1. SAND MAFIA TRUCK MOWS DOWN COP
(FARIDABAD, June 12, 2012)
• A Haryana Police constable Mahavir Singh
was run over by a truck loaded with sand,
when he attempted to stop the vehicle at the
Badarpur border. Police claimed the bus
carried illegal sand minings from Yamuna. He
was rushed immediately to the hospital but
was unfortunately declared dead on arrival.

8. 2. Central team finds rampant mining in U.P.
district (AUGUST 10, 2013)
 The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had found
mining rampant in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Uttar
Pradesh along the Yamuna River.
 This was in violation of the environmental regulations, the
Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act,
1957 and the directions given by the Honourable Supreme
Court, Honourable High Court of Allahabad and National
Green Tribunal, New Delhi.
 But the committee did not recommend any action against
either the officers or the miners in the district. Instead, it laid
down procedures, rules and precautions to be applied in
future.

laid by sand mafia (August 9, 2013)
 Durga Shakti Nagpal, a young Indian civil servant, has found herself
the focus of huge media attention and political debate after she was
suspended allegedly for ordering the destruction of a wall that was to
form part of a mosque.
 Political and environmental activists, however, argue that Ms. Nagpal
was targeted for work she reportedly did to curtail illegal mining in
Uttar Pradesh, the northern Indian state where she was a local
magistrate.
 Ms. Nagpal, was suspended on July 27 from her post in Gautam
Buddh Nagar in western Uttar Pradesh by the Samajwadi Party-led
government.
