I. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
This course, Academic Writing Skills 202, basically introduces the concepts of paragraphs and
essays. There are seven chapters for this course: Chapter 1: Introduction to Academic Writing_
Beginning Studies at an American University; Chapter 2: Types of Paragraphs_ Lifetime Firsts;
Chapter 3: Organizations of Paragraphs_ Holidays; Chapter 4: Coherence and Cohesion_ Passages of
Life; Chapter 5: Unity and Completeness_ Events in U.S. History; Chapter 6: From Paragraph to
Essay_ Animals in Their Ecosystems; and Chapter 7: The Thesis Statement_ How Human Beings
Shape Their Environment.
Furthermore, Academic Writing is designed to develop and sharpen learners’ academic and
professional writing skills and effective strategies in English. Hence, the learners are supposed to get
involved in some practical and independent activities to maintain their ability and skills in English
academic writing settings. For maintaining the capacity building, they have to work in teams to discuss
about the lessons and projects. They also have the individual tasks to do in order to strengthen their
writing skills. In addition, they are required to do the group assignments and quizzes as extra practices.
Group assignments would give them the chance to work with other group members to find out the
supporting documents related to their particular given topics. They also do their presentations about the

findings they have found with group members. This also lets them gain other skills such as research
skills and presentation skills.
Therefore, this course exists of seven chapters about paragraphs and essays. The lecturer would be
facilitating and lecturing on the lessons. However, the learners are required to participate and work in
pairs or groups to discuss about the given topics and present to the class.
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES
This academic course is aimed to help build the learners’ proficiency and confidence in English
writing tasks. The learners are supposed to learn the basic definitions of paragraph and essay. They are
also able to determine the certain formats and styles of paragraphs and essays. Moreover, writing with
the accuracy is also another significant purpose of this course. Therefore, they would be able to be
confident in their writing tasks. They are able to produce the proficient writing outcomes in terms of
basic paragraphs and essays.
 At the end of the academic course, the learners will be able to:
- Dynamically get involved with the basic concepts of paragraphs and essays.
- Effectively share the concepts and opinions of the lessons with the class.
- Collaboratively work with classmates to achieve the particular aims of each lesson.
- Productively describe the useful information of structures of paragraphs and essays.
- Efficiently practice writing paragraphs and essays.
III. COURSE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT

 Assignment must be held on October 27th
, 2020.
 Mid-Semester Exam must be held on October 19th

VI. TEACHING METHODS
As the earlier mentioned in the course description, there are various techniques and activities for the
learners and the lecturer to collaboratively work in order to achieve the well planned and proposed
objectives. For instance, group discussions, pair-work, individual work, group assignment, individual
assignment, tests, homework, quiz, sharing sessions, individual presentation, group presentation,
teacher-centered-approach, learner-centered-method, and other related activities will be dynamically
processed during the respective academic course. All above mentioned tasks are about the practical
activities of the course of Academic Writing Skills 202.

VIII. COURSE POLICY
1. Cheating: Any cheating, plagiarism, copying of any assignments from textbooks, Internet, and
friends’ will be not allowed. It may seriously result in a failing grade.
2. Attendance: All students are expected to attend all the class sessions regularly and punctually.
3. Class Participation: Participation in class, discussions, sharing, and asking questions are
required and considered as parts of course assessments.
4. Phone Use: Students have to turn off their phones or keep in silent mode during class time.
5. Mid-Semester Exam & Homework & Final Exam: Students will automatically get an “F” if
they are found cheating.
6. Tardiness: Lateness is an unacceptable behavior; the students will be considered an absence if
she or he is late twice.

  • 1. 1 INSTITUTE OF NEW KHMER Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Languages Department of English Program: English Literature_ 202 Associate Batch: 11; Bachelor Batch: 09 ___________________________________________________________________________________ Course Syllabus  Course Title: Academic Writing Skills_ 202  Time: Two Hours /a Week  Institution: Institute of New Khmer (INK)  Number of Class Hour: 45 Hours  Room: 201  Lecturer: Mr. CHUENG Pich (Diploma Degree in IEAP at PUC; BA in English Literature at PSBU; BA in English for Communication at WU; M.Ed. in English Based, PSBU; and M.Ed. in Mentoring, NGPRC of NIE)  Official Hours: Tuesday: 5:30 – 8.30 P.M.  Contact Information: +855 81 47 32 43; Email Address: pichhigher2020@gmail.com ___________________________________________________________________________________ I. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS This course, Academic Writing Skills 202, basically introduces the concepts of paragraphs and essays. There are seven chapters for this course: Chapter 1: Introduction to Academic Writing_ Beginning Studies at an American University; Chapter 2: Types of Paragraphs_ Lifetime Firsts; Chapter 3: Organizations of Paragraphs_ Holidays; Chapter 4: Coherence and Cohesion_ Passages of Life; Chapter 5: Unity and Completeness_ Events in U.S. History; Chapter 6: From Paragraph to Essay_ Animals in Their Ecosystems; and Chapter 7: The Thesis Statement_ How Human Beings Shape Their Environment. Furthermore, Academic Writing is designed to develop and sharpen learners’ academic and professional writing skills and effective strategies in English. Hence, the learners are supposed to get involved in some practical and independent activities to maintain their ability and skills in English academic writing settings. For maintaining the capacity building, they have to work in teams to discuss about the lessons and projects. They also have the individual tasks to do in order to strengthen their writing skills. In addition, they are required to do the group assignments and quizzes as extra practices. Group assignments would give them the chance to work with other group members to find out the supporting documents related to their particular given topics. They also do their presentations about the
  • 2. 2 findings they have found with group members. This also lets them gain other skills such as research skills and presentation skills. Therefore, this course exists of seven chapters about paragraphs and essays. The lecturer would be facilitating and lecturing on the lessons. However, the learners are required to participate and work in pairs or groups to discuss about the given topics and present to the class. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES This academic course is aimed to help build the learners’ proficiency and confidence in English writing tasks. The learners are supposed to learn the basic definitions of paragraph and essay. They are also able to determine the certain formats and styles of paragraphs and essays. Moreover, writing with the accuracy is also another significant purpose of this course. Therefore, they would be able to be confident in their writing tasks. They are able to produce the proficient writing outcomes in terms of basic paragraphs and essays.  At the end of the academic course, the learners will be able to: - Dynamically get involved with the basic concepts of paragraphs and essays. - Effectively share the concepts and opinions of the lessons with the class. - Collaboratively work with classmates to achieve the particular aims of each lesson. - Productively describe the useful information of structures of paragraphs and essays. - Efficiently practice writing paragraphs and essays. III. COURSE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT Attendance Textbooks Assignment Mid-Semester Exam Final Exam 10% 10% 15% 15% 50% Total Percentage 100 % Notes:  Assignment must be held on October 27th , 2020.  Mid-Semester Exam must be held on October 19th , 2020.  The Final Examination must be taken (Institute will inform). The Academic Course must be properly ended on December 31st , 2020.  These above-mentioned notes are subject to change accordingly to the compulsory situation. TEACHING METHODS As the earlier mentioned in the course description, there are various techniques and activities for the learners and the lecturer to collaboratively work in order to achieve the well planned and proposed objectives. For instance, group discussions, pair-work, individual work, group assignment, individual assignment, tests, homework, quiz, sharing sessions, individual presentation, group presentation, teacher-centered-approach, learner-centered-method, and other related activities will be dynamically processed during the respective academic course. VIII. COURSE POLICY 1. Cheating: Any cheating, plagiarism, copying of any assignments from textbooks, Internet, and friends’ will be not allowed. It may seriously result in a failing grade. 2. Attendance: All students are expected to attend all the class sessions regularly and punctually. 3. Class Participation: Participation in class, discussions, sharing, and asking questions are required and considered as parts of course assessments. 4. Phone Use: Students have to turn off their phones or keep in silent mode during class time. 5. Mid-Semester Exam & Homework & Final Exam: Students will automatically get an “F” if they are found cheating. 6.
