China taking over USA and the West in Climate Change Coping amulya123
In 2017, it is crystal clear that China is taking over global leadership with stalwarts of the West: USA and England explicitly dumping Climate Change as not even existing after demonizing China as a "Third World" country exempt from Greenhouse Gases Emissions control in the earlier Kyoto Protocol proposals. But China had been investing in massive non Greenhouse Gases emitting industrial and economy at a scale larger than all of the West as this Indian bureacrat, Sanwal, normally not a friend or admirer of China, pointing this out as early as 2011 before the Rio+20 conference, and my graduate student has done a nice presentation about this Paper.

The recent midterm elections resulted in the election of new members of congress. One of them, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has proposed what has been described as the Green New Deal modeled after the programs the government used in the 1930’s to pull the country out of the Great Depression. The goal of the groundbreaking legislation is to mitigate the effects of climate change while simultaneously creating a fair and just economy. Hear about what the New Green Deal proposes, why it is nothing new and what needs to happen for this legislation to become a reality.

"Changing climate - Is resource efficiency a way out of crisis?"
All countries must take more action. Otherwise the climate change will continue steadily. As a result, there is a growing risk that different types of crisis and the struggle for increasingly scarce natural resources, such as clean water, will become more common. Could resource efficiency boost growth at country level and, in this way, prevent conflicts? And what would be the role of resource efficiency in the recovery from conflicts? What are the challenges and opportunities of the bioeconomy in the slowing down of climate change?
Very topical morning seminar in Joensuu Eastern Finland pointed out the relationship between resource efficiency, development and conflicts on the one hand and the relationship between climate change and bioeconomy on the other.
Speeches were given by Doctor Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman of IPCC and Heidi Hautala, Finland’s Minister for International Development.
The seminar, organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, TERI and the Nordic office of TERI, served as an introduction to the Koli Forum that will take place between 17 and 19 September.

India may have dodged a bullet as Cyclone Phalin strikes Bay of Bengal 12 October 2013. Cyclone Phalin is one of the most powerful cyclones in history, yet the death toll reported as of 14 October only 21. 900,000 residents were evacuated to shelters in schools and government offices. Authorities also moved food and medicine close to affected areas before the storm. Those preparations now are credited with the huge reduction in casualties compared with 1999's Cyclone Orissa, which killed 10,000 and caused more than $2 billion in damage. The comparatively low mortality this time may be result of effective strategic planning and collaboration (i.e., working together on a common goal) for becoming cyclone disaster resilient

My My Digital Artifact focuses on three issues about Cities and Climate Change:
1- How cities contribute to climate change.
Cities have become awesome in size, and also greenhouse gas emissions. Larger cities have a ravenous appetite for energy, consuming ⅔ of the world's energy and creating over 70% of global CO2 emissions.
2- Impacts of Climate change on Cities
Almost 50% of cities are already dealing with the effects of climate change, and nearly all are at risk. Over 90% of all urban areas are coastal, putting most cities on Earth at risk of flooding from rising sea levels and powerful storms. The financial effects of climate change can be just as devastating as the physical ones. Unexpected expenditures from storms, flooding, snow removal and drought can lead to major disruptions in business operations and city budgets.
3- How cities also have the opportunity to be integral to its solution.
Urban density can actually create the possibility for a better quality of life and a lower carbon footprint through more efficient infrastructure and planning.
City mayors are directly accountable to their constituents for their decisions, and are more nimble than state and national elected officials to take decisive action—often with immediate and impactful results. What our cities do individually and in unison to address climate change can set the agenda for communities and governments everywhere.
We believe that a better global future lies in urban innovation and action. As the majority of future humans will live in cities, it just makes sense that our solution to climate change will reside there too.

The Fifth Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the
most comprehensive and relevant analysis of our changing climate. It provides the scientific fact base that will be used around the world to formulate
climate policies in the coming years. This document is one of a series synthesizing the most pertinent findings of AR5 for specific economic and business sectors. It was born of the belief that the cities sector could make more use of AR5, which is long and highly technical, if it were distilled into an accurate, accessible, timely, relevant and readable summary. Although the information presented here is a ‘translation’ of the key content relevant to this sector from AR5, this summary report adheres to the rigorous scientific basis of the original source material.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
