Code of ethics
▸ The ICN code of nurses is the foundation
for ethical nursing practice throughout the
world. It was adopted by ICN in 1953 and
revised and completed in 2012.
‣ It has four principal elements that outline
the standards of ethical conduct of nurses.
 Nurses and people
 Nurses and practice
 Nurses and the profession
 Nurses and co-workers

1.Nurses and people
• The nurse's primary professional responsibility is to people requiring nursing
care.
In providing care, the nurse promotes an environment in which the human
rights, values, customs and spiritual beliefs of the individual, family and
community are respected.
• The nurse ensures that the individual receives sufficient information on which
to base consent for care and related treatment.
• The nurse holds in confidence personal information and uses judgement in
sharing this information.
• The nurse also shares responsibility to sustain and protect the natural
environment from depletion, pollution, degradation and destruction.

2. Nurses and practice
• The nurse carries personal responsibility and accountability for nursing
practice, and for maintaining competence by continual learning.
• The nurse maintains a standard of personal health such that the ability to
provide care is not compromised.
• The nurse uses judgement regarding individual competence when accepting
and delegating responsibility.
• The nurse at all times maintains standards of personal conduct which reflect
well on the profession and enhance public confidence.
The nurse, in providing care, ensures that use of technology and scientific
advances are compatible with the safety, dignity and rights of people.

3. Nurses and the profession
The nurse assumes the major role in determining and implementing
acceptable standards of clinical nursing practice, management, research and
education.
The nurse is active in developing a core of research-based professional
knowledge that supports evidence-based practice.
The nurse is active in developing and sustaining a core of professional
values.
The nurse, acting through the professional organization, participates in
creating a positive practice environment and maintaining safe, equitable
social and economic working conditions in nursing.
.The nurse contributes to an ethical organisational environment and
challenges unethical practices and settings.

4. Nurses and co-workers
• The nurse sustains a collaborative and respectful
relationship with co- workers in nursing and other
fields.
• The nurse takes appropriate action to safeguard
individuals, families and communities when their
health is endangered by a co-worker or any other
person.
⚫The nurse takes appropriate action to support and
guide co-workers to advance ethical conduct.

Responsibilities
Nurses have four fundamental
responsibilities:
• To promote health,
• To Prevent illness,
• To restore health and
• To alleviate suffering
What is Nursing Liability?
– Nurses are responsible for
providing safe, competent, legal,
and ethical care to clients and
families .
– Nurses are expected to meet
standards of care, meaning the
care that they provide to clients
meets set expectations and is what
any nurse in a similar situation
would do.
– Standards of care are developed
from professional standards
. TYPES OF LIABILITY IN
NURSING
PERSONAL LIABILITY:
■ Each professional is responsible for his or her
own actions
■ SUPERVISOR LIABILITY:
■ Supervisors are responsible for the actions of
those working under their directions
■ *EMPLOYER LIABILITY:
■ Employers can be held responsible for actions
committed by employers
STEPS TO AVOID LIABILITY
■ Practice within the scope
of state laws and nurse
practice act.
■ - Collaborate with
colleagues to determine
the best course of action.
■ - Use established practice
standards to guide
decisions and actions

■ Always put the client's rights and
welfare first.
■ Develop effective interpersonal
relationships with clients and
families.
■ - Accurately and thoroughly
document all assessment data,
treatments, interventions, and evalu-
ation of the client's response to care.
NURSING LIABILITIES AND
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
 All nursing observations should be noted
carefully, describing accurately
 Patients complaints should be recorded as
accurately and specifically
 Nurse must report through proper channels
 Authorities must be informed regarding any
kind of equipment, materials or supplies, which
for any reasons less than safe for use in the
patient's care
 Insurance protection

a therapeutic relationship with each
client.

establishing and ma​intaining boundaries.

information about themselves only after
they determine it may help to meet the
therapeutic needs of the client.

the client’s family and friends as with the

 Nurses do not act as representatives for
clients under powers of attorney or
representation agreements.
 Nurses help colleagues to maintain
professional boundaries and report evidence
of boundary violations to the appropriate
person.

  • 4. Code of ethics ▸ The ICN code of nurses is the foundation for ethical nursing practice throughout the world. It was adopted by ICN in 1953 and revised and completed in 2012. ‣ It has four principal elements that outline the standards of ethical conduct of nurses.  Nurses and people  Nurses and practice  Nurses and the profession  Nurses and co-workers
  • 5. ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses 1.Nurses and people • The nurse's primary professional responsibility is to people requiring nursing care. In providing care, the nurse promotes an environment in which the human rights, values, customs and spiritual beliefs of the individual, family and community are respected. • The nurse ensures that the individual receives sufficient information on which to base consent for care and related treatment. • The nurse holds in confidence personal information and uses judgement in sharing this information. • The nurse also shares responsibility to sustain and protect the natural environment from depletion, pollution, degradation and destruction.

Nurses and practice • The nurse carries personal responsibility and accountability for nursing practice, and for maintaining competence by continual learning. • The nurse maintains a standard of personal health such that the ability to provide care is not compromised. • The nurse uses judgement regarding individual competence when accepting and delegating responsibility. • The nurse at all times maintains standards of personal conduct which reflect well on the profession and enhance public confidence. The nurse, in providing care, ensures that use of technology and scientific advances are compatible with the safety, dignity and rights of people.

Nurses and the profession The nurse assumes the major role in determining and implementing acceptable standards of clinical nursing practice, management, research and education. The nurse is active in developing a core of research-based professional knowledge that supports evidence-based practice. The nurse is active in developing and sustaining a core of professional values. The nurse, acting through the professional organization, participates in creating a positive practice environment and maintaining safe, equitable social and economic working conditions in nursing. .The nurse contributes to an ethical organisational environment and challenges unethical practices and settings.

Nurses and co-workers • The nurse sustains a collaborative and respectful relationship with co- workers in nursing and other fields. • The nurse takes appropriate action to safeguard individuals, families and communities when their health is endangered by a co-worker or any other person. ⚫The nurse takes appropriate action to support and guide co-workers to advance ethical conduct.

What is Nursing Liability? – Nurses are responsible for providing safe, competent, legal, and ethical care to clients and families . – Nurses are expected to meet standards of care, meaning the care that they provide to clients meets set expectations and is what any nurse in a similar situation would do. – Standards of care are developed from professional standards

TYPES OF LIABILITY IN NURSING PERSONAL LIABILITY: ■ Each professional is responsible for his or her own actions ■ SUPERVISOR LIABILITY: ■ Supervisors are responsible for the actions of those working under their directions ■ *EMPLOYER LIABILITY: ■ Employers can be held responsible for actions committed by employers
  • 13. STEPS TO AVOID LIABILITY ■ Practice within the scope of state laws and nurse practice act. ■ - Collaborate with colleagues to determine the best course of action. ■ - Use established practice standards to guide decisions and actions

NURSING LIABILITIES AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES  All nursing observations should be noted carefully, describing accurately  Patients complaints should be recorded as accurately and specifically  Nurse must report through proper channels  Authorities must be informed regarding any kind of equipment, materials or supplies, which for any reasons less than safe for use in the patient's care  Insurance protection

Nursing Liability do ethical scope of nursing practice ■ Nurses use professional judgment to determine the appropriate boundari​es of a therapeutic relationship with each client. ■ The nurs​​e is always responsible for establishing and ma​intaining boundaries. ■ Nurses disclose a limited amount of information about themselves only after they determine it may help to meet the therapeutic needs of the client.

Nursing Liability do ethical scope of nursing practice(Cont….)  Nurses maintain the same boundaries with the client’s family and friends as with the cl​​ient.  Nurses do not act as representatives for clients under powers of attorney or representation agreements.  Nurses help colleagues to maintain professional boundaries and report evidence of boundary violations to the appropriate person.
