Introduction:
Most of the region, as its name implies, lies within a valley between the Cordillera
and the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. The country's longest river also flows in this
region while its east cost faces the Pacific Ocean. Hence, the Cagayan Valley
Region offers a never-ending adventures of caves, forest, waterfalls, beaches and

Quirino
Igado (or higado) is a Filipino pork dish originating from
the Ilocos Region in the Philippines.[1][2] Its name means "liver"
in Spanish for which it features, although it may include other
pork meats and offal also.[3][4]
The pork―liver, meat, and offal―are sliced into tiny pieces
and simmered with bell pepper and green peas, producing a
dish often likened to the menudo.[1] Unlike menudo, igado
typically uses soy sauce (or patis) and vinegar rather than
tomato sauce. Also, potatoes and carrots are optional.[5]
The dish was a favorite of Elpidio Quirino, an Ilocano, and
sixth president of the Philippines.
Festivals and Special Events

Cagayan
Aggao Nac Cagayan is a founding anniversary celebration in the province
of Cagayan, Philippines held every June 29. A province-wide festivity, it is gathering of
the province’s localities and a celebration of their diverse cultural festivals. It lasts for a
week and opening activities kick off in June 23.
Aggao Nac Cagayan translates to Cagayan Day. It is a festival that is joined by LGUs
of component localities of the province of Cagayan, schools, institutions, and other
organizations.
In the past, Cagayan was peopled by aboriginal group known as Agtas. Migration of
the Malays followed suit, displacing the aborigines to the more remote interiors of the
lands. The area had established trading centers with contacts and economic activities
with seafaring Chinese, Japanese, and other foreign merchants.
It was one of these settlements that Spanish colonizer Juan de Salcedo came upon
during his exploration at the onset of the Spanish conquest.
The civil government of Cagayan was established through a royal decree on June 29,
1583. It was then called La Provincia de Cagayan whose capital is Nueva Segovia
(the town of Lla-lo) and which consisted the provinces of Batanes, Isabela, Nueva
Vizcaya, Quirino, and some territories of Kalinga and Apayao. Reorganization over the
next centuries saw partitions of the province until in 1908 that its territory was defined.
the Piat Sambali Festival is a week-long celebration that takes place every year in
Piat, Cagayan, Philippines. The festival is a religious and cultural revival that
commemorates the Christianization of the Itawes region of Cagayan. It features
street dancing, cultural shows, and a beauty pageant.
It is celebrated from June 23 to 30. The festivity flows into the actual Feast of Our
Lady of Piat, which is kept on July 1 and 2. The festivity is a religious and cultural
revival to commemorate the Christianization of the Itawes region of Cagayan.
Bangkarera is a boat race along the river in Cagayan. It is participated by fisher
folks who want to showcase their skills in navigating the river and compete among
each other. It also puts a spotlight on the aquatic resources of the province.
Participants are representatives of their localities.

Major Cultural Groups Major Industries
language/Dialects Spoken
There are four major cultural groups in the Cagayan Region. These are the Ivatan,
Ibanag, Itawes, and Ilocano.
The Ivatans possessed unique skills to be resilient with weather conditions
of typhoon and drought in Batanes. They have built walls made of thick limestone
and thick cogon roof for their houses. They also have acquired the skill of
predicting the weather through the behavior of animals. The relative isolation of
the Ivatan/Itbayats in the Batanes/Babuyan group of islands has led to a distinct
indigenous culture with strong self- sufficiency. Because they are located in
typhoon prone areas, the houses, lifestyles, and agricultural crops are
conditioned to withstand strong winds. Agriculture is the base of livelihood with
self-sufficiency as the norm, hence, no marketplace exists in the communities.
The Ivatans are known for their oral traditions such as lyric songs (lagi), working
songs (kalusan) and legends (kabbata).
The Ibanag literally means ―people of the river,‖ as they are the people who
settled along the banks of the Cagayan River and the northern coasts of Luzon.
The Ibanag are concentrated within the towns of Tuguegarao, Solana, Cabagan,
and Iligan. They originally inhibited the areas by the mouth of Cagayan River but
have moved up and gradually influenced culture of older ethnicities like the Itawit,
Isinay, and Ga’dang. The Ibanag language became the lingua franca for
commerce. The culture was also heavily influenced by the migration of the
Ilocanos.
The Itawes have been variously called Itawit, Itawig, Tawish, Itawi, Itaves,
and Itabes. The Itawes means the people from across the river. In many towns,
the Itawes live with the Ibanag and Ibanag has become the standard language.
The Ilocanos make up the 3rd largest ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines
and is the most prominent ethnic group in the Philippines. Ilocano or Iluko is a
Western Austronesian language spoken in Northern Luzon, in various parts of
Philippines, and around the world. It comprises its own branch in the Philippine
Cordillera family of languages
The main corps are rice, corn, and tobacco.
Fishing is prevalent in the coast
of Cagayan, Isabela, Batanes and Magat Dam in
Isabela.
The region also produces livestock like cattle,
hog, carabaos, and poultry.
Other livelihood of the region includes rattan
furniture making and other
indigenous materials mainly for export

  • 28. Major Cultural Groups Major Industries language/Dialects Spoken There are four major cultural groups in the Cagayan Region. These are the Ivatan, Ibanag, Itawes, and Ilocano. The Ivatans possessed unique skills to be resilient with weather conditions of typhoon and drought in Batanes. They have built walls made of thick limestone and thick cogon roof for their houses. They also have acquired the skill of predicting the weather through the behavior of animals. The relative isolation of the Ivatan/Itbayats in the Batanes/Babuyan group of islands has led to a distinct indigenous culture with strong self- sufficiency. Because they are located in typhoon prone areas, the houses, lifestyles, and agricultural crops are conditioned to withstand strong winds. Agriculture is the base of livelihood with self-sufficiency as the norm, hence, no marketplace exists in the communities. The Ivatans are known for their oral traditions such as lyric songs (lagi), working songs (kalusan) and legends (kabbata). The Ibanag literally means ―people of the river,‖ as they are the people who settled along the banks of the Cagayan River and the northern coasts of Luzon. The Ibanag are concentrated within the towns of Tuguegarao, Solana, Cabagan, and Iligan. They originally inhibited the areas by the mouth of Cagayan River but have moved up and gradually influenced culture of older ethnicities like the Itawit, Isinay, and Ga’dang. The Ibanag language became the lingua franca for commerce. The culture was also heavily influenced by the migration of the Ilocanos. The Itawes have been variously called Itawit, Itawig, Tawish, Itawi, Itaves, and Itabes. The Itawes means the people from across the river. In many towns, the Itawes live with the Ibanag and Ibanag has become the standard language. The Ilocanos make up the 3rd largest ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines and is the most prominent ethnic group in the Philippines. Ilocano or Iluko is a Western Austronesian language spoken in Northern Luzon, in various parts of Philippines, and around the world. It comprises its own branch in the Philippine Cordillera family of languages The main corps are rice, corn, and tobacco. Fishing is prevalent in the coast of Cagayan, Isabela, Batanes and Magat Dam in Isabela. The region also produces livestock like cattle, hog, carabaos, and poultry. Other livelihood of the region includes rattan furniture making and other indigenous materials mainly for export - Tagalog - English - Ivatan - Ichbayaten - Ilokano - Ibanag - Itawis - Gaddang - Isinay
