fish pond
A fish pond is a reservoir that is stocked with
fish and is used for fish farming in aquaculture.
It is the most common process of fish culture.
It is also used for recreational fishing and
ornamental purposes.

Types of ponds
On the basis of stages of growth there are three types of ponds;
Nursery ponds
Fattening ponds
Stocking ponds

Nursery pond
A pond where spawn is reared up to fry stage is known is nursery pond.
Nursery pond are the subset of rearing pond that house fish during the
most delicate and difficult stages of growth.
Nursery ponds are fertilize prior to the arrival of new batch so there are
plenty of food sources.

Size
Nursery pond should be small and shallow, a pond having 0.02 - 0.06 ha
water area and 1 - 1.5 meter depth are most suitable.
The three days old spawn are stocked.
Fishes are reared for 21 to 90 days to attain a length of 2 to 3 cm.
In practice 10million spawn per hactre are stocked in nursery pond.

Management:
 Management of nursery can be done through;
 Clearance of weed.
 Eradication of unwanted fishes.
 Application of lime.
 Manuring of pond.
 Aquatic insect control.
 Stocking of spawn.
 Supplementary feeding

Fattening ponds
 Fattening ponds are used for the production of food fishes.
 Fattening ponds allow good access for feeds, fertilizers and equipment
 As well as easy transfer of harvested fish to storage ponds or outside market.
 Fish fattening represent the final rearing stage before harvest and sale.
 It concern the stage of fish growth between ±40g to the harvest size fish of 200 to
800g, the individual size determined by the market demand.

Stocking ponds
 Stocking ponds means those pond where rearing of fingerlings to table sized
fish need to be done.
 Polyculture of carps is followed in stocking pond .
 Spring or fall is the ideal time for fish stocking .
 Temperatures are mild and oxygen levels are high so fish growth
is at maximum.

Aquaculture and fisheries , ZOO561, Sabeela Naz, ZO320221018, Mphil Scholar , Department of Zoology ,
KUST
Size
 Ideal depth of stocking pond is 6 to 8 feet.
 Most biological productions occur near the water surface and water
deeper then 8 feet may create condition that lead to oxygen depletion
and fish killed.
