- 1. SECTION ONE: ACCENTS! Circumflex may stand over the ultima or penult only. Long ultima receives circumflex. Short ultima pushes Lesson Five circumflex to penult. BUT only if it is to be accented! Vocabulary: The diphthong υι with the rough breathing Masculine Substantives mark, as in υιος , is pronounce “hwee”. αδελϕος brother Neuter substantives of the o-declension have θεος God their nominatives singular in -ον . λαος people Pay close attention to the form of the article ουρανος heaven while learning the declension of the υιος son Neuter substantive “εργον ”. (Remember: in L ουρανω ουρανοις diphthongs −ου, −οις, the I ουρανω ουρανοις circumflex is over the second D ουρανω ουρανοις vowel.) IF Long Ultima Is Accented A ουρανον ουρανους it changes to circumflex in G, A, L, V ουρανε ουρανοι I, D cases. απο is a preposition meaning “from, off”, and is only used with the ablative case (which denotes “from”) in the New Testament.
