The Golden Age And The Golden Age
I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life
to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I
needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover,
Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended
up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry
about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this
young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday
life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how
it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the
grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first
grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age.
In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however,
reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be
insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not
as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have
been able

Essay about Comparing Billy Budd and Christ
Comparing Billy and Christ in Billy Budd
Herman Melville s Billy Budd provides us with a summation and conclusive commentary on the
ambiguities of moral righteousness and social necessity. The conflict that arises pitting natural justice
in opposition to military justice essentially deliberates over whether the sacrifice of the individual is
required for the continuum and conservation of social order. The deep allegorical theme of the passion
of Christ that resides in Billy Budd illustrates Melville s adjudication on this issue. The sacrifice of
Billy Budd for the upholding of social order is an illusionary backdrop to Christ offering up His life
for the forgiveness of the sins of mankind. Melville implements this theological staple ... Show more

Part of Billy s appeal to his shipmates was due to his unparalleled feats of strength that had become
canonized amongst them. Just as Jesus tales of miracle workings and deeds helped to further His
legend, Billy s prodigious exploits and physical attributes in turn furthered his own: Tales of his
prowess were recited. Ashore he was the champion; afloat the spokesman; on every suitable occasion
always foremost (1486). The recantation of Billy manhandling Red Whiskers, who is openly hostile
towards Billy, and subsequent winning of his allegiance, can be viewed as an allegorical tale of Jesus
winning over the stubborn Simon Peter into His congregation of Apostles. Billy, like Christ, is a
symbol of peace and unites the other sailors into a familial contingent: But Billy came; and it was like
a Catholic priest striking peace in an Irish shindy. Not that he preached to them or said or did anything
in particular; but a virtue went out of him, sugaring the sour ones (1488). The familial aspect of the
crew is alluded to in the description of Billy not having any known relatives or family members: for
Billy, as will shortly be seen, his entire family was practically invested in himself (1490). This idea
goes along with Christian theology often invoking the image of the

The Collapse Of Indymac Bank
The Collapse of IndyMac Bank
In 2008 the world faced the worst financial crisis since the great depression. Many banks closed their
doors for good that year. Among them were both small and large banks. One specific bank that
collapsed that year was IndyMac, one of the largest banks in the United States. IndyMac marked the
largest collapse of a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insured institution since 1984,
when Continental Illinois, which had $40 billion in assets, failed, according to FDIC records ( The
Fall of IndyMac 2008). This paper will talk about the cause of the collapse of IndyMac in 2008, the
handling of the issues, as well as the aftermath of the collapse. IndyMac was created by David Loeb
and Angelo Mozilo in 1985 and was originally called Countrywide Mortgage Investment. It was built
to collect Countrywide Financial loans that were too large to be sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.
IndyMac Bank was the largest savings and loan association in the Los Angeles area and the seventh
largest mortgage originator in the United States ( Too Good to Be True: The Fall of IndyMac , 2008).
In 1999, IndyMac loaned out record amounts. In the first quarter alone IndyMac loaned out $1.6
billion. In July of 2000, IndyMac became IndyMac Bank when it acquired SGV Bancorp. The total
purchase cost was $62.5 million and it made IndyMac Bank the ninth largest bank at the time.
IndyMac was also the 28th biggest lender in the country( Too Good to Be True: The Fall of

The Assumption And Implication Of Good Faith
Introduction When one party receives a check and transfers it, is the transferee a holder in due course?
The response to this question is it depends on the facts and circumstances. The assumption and
implication of good faith plays a role in determining a holder in due course. In our case, one party is
attempting to take advantage of the other through fraud and deceit. This paper explores who is a
holder in due course, the influence of fraud and deceit, the role of the stop payment, and who is
responsible when a situation goes wrong. Material Facts John G. Talcott, Jr., is a ninety three year old
Massachusetts resident, D.J. Rivera, a financial advisor to Talcott, and Salvatore Guarino, an associate
of Rivera. Rivera and Talcott ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He assumed that Rivera knew that he had stopped payment on the $10,000 check. Several years
earlier, Guarino established check cashing privileges at Any Kind Checks Cashed, Inc. using their
required documentation. Guarino took possession of the $10,000 check on January 11 and took it to
Any Kind s Stuart, Florida to cash the check. Standard operating procedure at Any Kind requires
supervisor approval of any check over $2,000. After checking Guarino s driver s license and asking
the purpose of the check, supervisor Nancy Michael determined the check was valid. A Federal
Express envelope validated this decision, despite an inability to contact Talcott. After deducting a five
percent check cashing fee, Guarino received a $9,500 check. Six days later, Guarino returned to the
same Any Kind location, presented a $5,700 check to the teller using similar proof, and required
supervisor approval again. The teller spoke to Michael regarding the check, and she instructed the
teller not to cash the check until she reached Talcott and received approval. Talcott approved the
$5,700 check, but Any Kind did not mention the $10,000 check from the previous day. Any Kind
cashed the second check after deducting a 3% fee. On January 19, Rivera called Talcott and told him
what transpired with Guarino. Talcott called his bank and stopped payment on the $5,700 check.
Talcott s daughter called Any Kind and told it of the stop payment on the $5,700 check. I agree with

In Psychology 101 I have learned new things that Psychology in high school didn t teach me. I was
very excited to learn about the different types of personalities. A Type A personality is someone who is
competitive, very organized, impatient, ambitious, great at time management and aggressive. Knowing
what these characteristics about a person will help me to better connect with them and know them

and that will help me more in my personal life to make friends and help others.

Essay about When Harry Met Sally
The film When Harry Met Sally is rife with examples of interpersonal communication victories and
utter failures. The main characters Harry Burns played by Billy Crystal and Sally Albright played by
Meg Ryan are captive to each other s company during a car ride from Chicago to New York and
quickly find they maintain very opposite viewpoints on much of life, especially relationships between
men and women. The premise for the argument and the remainder of the film is the disagreement as to
whether or not women and men can be friends without sex getting in the way. Harry maintains it is not
possible, and Sally takes the opposite position. Throughout the film Harry and Sally display a number
of different communication traits. Their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my current role as an account executive the organization places the entire roster of account
executives and their daily production on the company s intranet site for everyone to see. You cannot
access your numbers and reports without first seeing this report. Over the course of the last five years I
have heard numerous people compare themselves and make assessments regarding their ability based
on how the rank relative to others on the account report. I have learned, however, to avoid reviewing
the report in order to maintain a higher self esteem, which in turn creates better results, and becomes
self perpetuating. According to a 1993 study in the longitudinal consistency and change in self esteem
form early adolescence to early childhood by Block and Robbins, between the ages of 14 and 23 exists
the potential for great changes in how the self concept develops and is shaped. The study also
concluded that more males increased their sense of self esteem during this time than did females. After
people approach the age of 30, most self concepts remain relatively stable without significant
conscious effort (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 63). A realistic self concept should change over time as it
reflects the reality of current circumstances and previous experiences. The tendency, however, is to
resist those changes and instead seek out others than confirm the self concept. The powerful effect that

Dynamic Advocacy Model
A client by the name of Rick lives in Montclair, New Jersey. His current situation has been created by
several economic and social justice issues. Rick currently lives in a two bedroom apartment where his
rent is $1,900 a month, his wife has custody of the two children, he lost his job due to testing positive
for cocaine, and he is also the sole caretaker of his mother who lives in a nursing home. There are
many different obstacles facing Rick, from his inability to pay for his apartment, take care of his
children, his mother, or himself. The reason for him not being able to see his children is his inability to
feed them, his rent is too high for him to have enough money left over from his unemployment checks
which are $1,011.02. He would need to extend his benefits, but, due to changes in governmental
policies he cannot. Whether these policy changes are due to budget cuts, or related to his drug test, he
needs assistance of some sort in order to prevent him from spiraling into possible depression.
He was terminated from his job as a nursing assistant for testing positive for cocaine. He told his
Human Resources director that he is not a drug addict and only took the drug once, though this may or
may not be the case, they decided to terminate his employment given the importance of his job.

A Good Idea For The Green Party
There is clear evidence that invasive species of plants and animals can cause grave consequences to
native organisms. Charles Mann talks about this a lot in his book 1493, and provides his readers with
several examples of this problem. Some people believe that strict laws should be enforced when it
comes to the movement of plants, animals, and people between distant places. I m an environmental
friendly person and even support the Green Party, but I completely disagree with this. I realize that
this problem exists, but I do not believe that strictly enforcing laws against the movement of live
organisms is a good idea. I believe that we should loosely limit and control organisms being moved. In
Charles Mann s book, 1493, he talks about several problems throughout the world including the
movement of organisms from one location to a foreign location. One example that Mann provides his
readers with was, worms killing terraces in Ifugao (Mann 495). The worm species Pheretima and
Polypheretima are invading terraces and killing them because of their hungry appetite. These giant
earthworms came from oversees and can grow up to two feet in size. They leave huge tunnels and
water sluices out of them, killing the rice plants at the same time (Mann 495). These worms are
causing the terraces to become porous and sponge like, which should never be terms used for a
terrace. Another example that Mann uses is, the golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) which was

Measuring The Quality Of Clusters
Analysis Comparison
For measuring the quality of clusters four criteria have been used. The first three criteria are designed
so as to measure the quality of cluster sets at different levels of granularity. Ideally it s needed to
generate partitions that have compact, well separated clusters. Hence, the criteria used presently
combine the two measures to return a value that indicates the quality of the partition thus the value
returned is minimized when the partition is judged to consist of compact well separated clusters with
different criteria judging different partition as the best one. The last criterion is based on time
efficiency.
The term compactness and isolation are defined as follows: Compactness: This is a measure of
cohesion or similarity of objects in an individual cluster with respect to the other objects outside the
cluster. The greater the similarity the greater the compactness. Isolation: This is the measure of
distinctiveness or dissimilarity between a cluster and the rest of the world. The smaller the similarity,
the greater the isolation.
Presently simple distance based measure are used to evaluate compactness and isolation (Manhattan
Distance for the present work) has been used rather than statistical test of significance used in
multivariate analysis of variance. In this section, whilediscussing about each of the criterion R_i
represents an object or search result, C_j represents a cluster and C_jc its centroid. G_cis the global
centroid.

Biography Of Ronald Reagan
Good afternoon class, I am Shelbee Thompson and I choose Ronald Reagan as my president. Reagan
served two terms as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 1989. He was born in 1911 on
February 6th to Edward and Nelle Reagan in Tampico, Illinois. Before Ronald became president, he
was an actor, served in the United States Army, and served as a governor in California. During Reagan
s childhood, he and his family moved frequently to various small towns in Illinois because his father
switched sales jobs, but eventually settled in Dixon in 1920. In 1928, he graduated from Dixon High
School, where he was an athlete, was the student body president and performed in school plays. After

reelected as governor. In 1968 and 1976, Reagan was unable ] to win the nomination for president by
the Republican party. However, in 1980 he was successful, and at age 69, he became the nation s
oldest president. In March of 1981, a few months after his inauguration, he survived an assassination
attempt by John Hinckley Jr., who suffered psychiatric problems. The bullet punctured one of Reagan
s lungs and nearly missed his heart, but was back to work soon after. Ronald Reagans presidency is
famous for the reduction of the federal government s control over its citizens. He is recognized for tax
cuts which is known as Reaganomics. In his first term he had to make important decisions that would
decide America s place in the Cold War against the Soviets. In his second term he signed an agreement
with the leader of the Soviets which is recognized as settling the conflicts of the war. One of his

A Long Time Citizens
For a long time citizens have always respected the soldiers who stand to protect the nation, but none
care about how they do it or the psychological traumas they go through. After the Iraq War several
disturbing photos were released to the public. People who were distraught like Susan Sontag spoke up
and demanded an explanation for the events that took place in Abu Ghraib prison. Many have
questioned why no punishment was given to the perpetrators, but were disappointed when no direct
answer was given. Sontag tries to make a connection between the photos the military and their leaders,
and what they portray about the American society in her piece Regarding The Torture Of Others. She
displays acts of the military and their leaders showing justification in their act of torture to enemies
outside the United States. The act of generalizing a nation by an event in its history is not effective and
weakens her argument. This even has shaken the nation s image to the world, creating a different
interpretation about America and its citizens, which might not be accurate. The photographs of the
events that occurred in Abu Ghraib prison shows torture and abuse done to the prisoners by American
soldiers. The photos taken show how the military took pride in abusing and torturing victims. The act
of torturing prisoners gave the military a sense of achievement a memorable event that needed to be
recorded. Susan Sontag observed that, the perpetrators posing, gloating, over their helpless

International Accounting Standards Board s Preferred...
Introduction
International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC, 2003) define an asset as a resource controlled
by the entity as a result of past events and from which future economic benefits are expected to flow
to the entity. In a business model assets act as inputs, either directly (plant, machinery, inventory) or
indirectly (goodwill, patents, investment property) to provide products and services to the customer.
As assets are expected to generate future benefits, the income generated by these assets is reported
under the Income Statement while their value is reported in the Balance Sheet to deduce the value of
the said business.

an exit price) (IFRS13). Fair value is the market value of a firm s assets and ignores any special
benefits of the assets to the business resulting from competencies such as man management skills as
well as any transaction costs (Hitz, 2007). Therefore a fair value measurement is market based rather
than entity specific and it represents unbiased measurements that are consistent from period to period
and across entities (Penman, S. H., 2007). This helps to reinforce consistency and comparability
across various reporting entities. Fair Value measurements also have the property of objectivity as it is
non entity specific and reflects the market s valuation as compared to entity specific measurements
which are subject to managerial judgments (Whittington, 2010).
Entity specific measurements account for intangibles such as business competencies and managerial
know how, which gets reflected in the financial statements irrespective of whether they have been
demonstrated or not. Using fair value limits today s profit recognition to amounts market participants
would assess, and leaves to the future the recognition of profit associated with management skill and
synergies (Barth, 2010).
Hence we can conclude that market valuations incorporate market expectations regarding future cash
flows in an efficient and unbiased manner (Hitz, 2007). It can also be argued that fair value

What I Go Out of Media and Society Class On the first day of class, the question was asked why
everyone chose Media and Society. Most of us were truthful or maybe semi truthful and said that it
was a required course. The course was required for me, but I was eager to see what it was all about. I
was hoping to learn about journalism and possibly how media affects the way people think. Boy was I
back in the past. After a little coaxing; via reflections and videos, I started to understand this class and
what I was learning from it. At first these images of things moving at a whirlwind pace overwhelmed
me. I found from taking this class that I am very old school, much to my dismay. I feel this way for a

tempting, I m not fast to pick up these new gadgets. I don t really have an affinity for changing my

Heritage And Heritage Of Heritage
The one thing that sets an individual from other individuals is the uniqueness of one s heritage.
Heritage is the essential part of a person s life, it is the very foundation that an individual future is
built from. Heritage can be based on a family values, tradition and environment. Traditions, and
cultural legacies come from grandparents or older relatives, they contribute to our family values. We
all take the parts of the past that means the most to us, and combine it with the new traditions. In this
paper, I will discuss what heritage is, the importance of how heritage identifies an individual, or can it
inhibit an individual s self identity, and finally look at some family tradition that makes up one s
heritage.
What is heritage?
First, heritage is a critical piece that represents who you are; it is the history of an individual. Heritage
is something that you are born with or have inherited. This can be the color of your skin, an accent in
the language that you speak, or the passing down of a unique item. For example, the short story
Everyday Use , by Alice Walker, the narrator of the story Mama passes down two quilt to one of her
daughter s, Maggie. The quilt had been hand made with all kinds of material, one particular material
was from Maggie s Grandpa Ezra. Grandpa Ezra s materials had come from his uniform that he had
worn, while in the Civil War. Other material for the quilt had come from a dress that her Grandma Dee

Paul Bernardo Research Paper
Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka are dubbed as the Ken and Barbie Killers because of the crimes
they committed as a couple during the 1990s. Paul was 23 and Karla was 17 years old when their
relationship began. The two young adults were perfectly normal; with their good looks and charming
manners no one suspected these average Canadian citizens to be psychopathic killers.
Brief Background:
Karla Leanne Homolka, born in 1970, grew up in Ontario with a loving family which included her two
sisters and parents. Paul Kenneth Bernardo was born in 1964, in Scarborough and throughout
childhood, faced issues at home with an abusive father and depressed mother. Despite this he grew up

Bernardo was charged with two counts each of kidnapping, unlawful confinement, aggravated sexual
assault and first degree murder as well as one of dismemberment.
Bernardo received a life sentence without parole for 25 years. It is unlikely he will ever be released
because he was classed as a Dangerous Offender .
Karla received 12 years imprisonment due to the plea bargain. She was originally thought to be a
victim of Paul Bernardo s monstrous influence but when the tapes were watched they found her to be
a more active participant than what was originally thought. She is free today.
Theories of Punishment:
Both the theories of punishment behind the sentences were retribution. Paul is not expected to come
out of prison and Karla completed her 12 years in prison without much rehabilitation. In cases like
these where the criminal committed such terrible crimes, it would not be expected that anything other
the retribution be enforced. Unfortunately, the theory of retribution has hardly served justice for Karla
as she should still be receiving punishment by being in prison.

The removal of Confederate monuments in some cities has stirred up intense controversy because of
white supremacist protesting the removal of the statues. These white supremacist are protesting the
removal of the statues because when they think of the Confederacy they think back in history when

because they believe that by removing the statues, you re erasing the south s history. They say the

Informal And Informal Language
Informal Language is Dependent on Context
Many of us switch between formal and informal language without much thought. It has become
almost instinctual to adapt the appropriate language to the purpose, audience and the social setting of
the discourse. Informal language includes the use of discourse particles, hypertaxis and non standard
syntax which are used to increase social proximity, promote in group membership and reinforce the
exclusivity of the group. The use of informal language largely depends on context: where the
conversation is upheld, what text type and mode it is in and the audience to which it is directed to.
The situation plays an imperative role into the degree in which informal language is used. Teenage

The spoken mode, in general, is much more personal and informal than the written with slimmer
chances of misunderstandings and responses tend to be instantaneous rather than delayed. While the
written mode is more scripted and usually appears without non fluency features, the spoken mode
involves many prosodic and paralinguistic features could be used including stress, large range of
volume (from whispering secrets to exclamations) and a rising intonation can help the speaker hand

necessarily be viewed as important and a slower to medium pace may be used to ensure the audience
is comprehending what is said, this speed is more often used in formal language. Informal body
language may also be used such as waving of hands or excitedly jumping whilst formal, in
comparison, would include standing still and without the blatant display of emotion. By reviewing the

Essay On Opioid Epidemic
The Opioid Epidemic in Canada and the USA and its Effects on the Health of the Affected
Communities Canada is in the mist of opioid overdose. On a per capita bases Canada is second only to
the US in opioid consumption and overdose. No fewer than 2480 people died from opioid overdoses
in 2016 across Canada. Among the hardest hit provinces are British Colombia, Alberta, and Ontario.
British Columbia reported close to 800 overdose fatalities between January and June of this year, a
jump of nearly 100 percent over the same period last year. In Alberta over 100 deaths were attributed
to fentanyl overdose between January and March of this year. Similar trends are seen across the
country. Literature Review The medicinal use of opioids like ... Show more content on

Programs to Address the Opioid Epidemic Various levels of governments in different communities
across North America have initiated programs to deal with the opioid epidemic and its effect. Some of
these initiatives will be examined in more details below. Supervised Consumption Sites Supervised
consumption sites are seen as an effective means of reducing harm associated with illicit opioid
consumption. Generally these are sites where drug users can inject or consume drugs under the
observation of trained personal. The first of such consumption sites in Canada Insite was established
in Vancouver in 2003. So far there has not been a single reported case of overdose fatality at the site.
The success of Insite as a harm reduction approach has encouraged jurisdictions across Canada to
adopt or contemplate similar systems. In 2017, the federal government passed Bill C 37 with the aim
of streamlining the application process for communities who wish to operate supervised consumption
sites. In Alberta, there are five proposed supervised injection sites, four in Edmonton and another in
Calgary. Out patient Naloxone Treatment Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is designed to rapidly
reverse opioid overdose. Take home naloxone programs aim to reduce overdose fatalities by training

America s Slippery Slope Analysis
America s Slippery Slope In The War On Terrorism
Terrorism is a word that strikes fear into many hearts, thus causing immediate panic to many.
Although, the word terrorism is doesn t have a definite meaning. People often give their own opinion
on terrorism. President Obama said, according to an article by Laura Beth Nielsen What Is terrorism? ,
source Al Jazeera, Anytime bombs are used to target civilians, it is an act of terrorism. . While so
many people get caught up in who president Obama is, many people forget that he is also a human.
Just like any other human he has his own opinion and he also makes mistakes. An opinion is a view or
judgement formed about something. So this could mean Obama is incorrect in his assumption on the
definition of terrorism. Now, that is also my opinion, therefore I could be wrong as well, but what how
is anyone supposed to be correct when there is no legitimate interpretation of the word terrorism.

Thomas Paine, an American Philosopher
An American born philosopher, Thomas Paine, was a strong adherent for independence and was
agnostic in the government. Born on January 29, 1737, Paine lived what we would now call a tough
life (http://www.britannica.com). At a young age, Paine had to withdraw from school to help his father
with work. He attempted many jobs such as a hunting smuggler and a collector of tobacco and liquor
taxes (http://www.britannica.com). Paine failed at those other jobs he tried and in 1774, moved to
Philadelphia where he got a job as a writer for the Pennsylvania magazine
(http://www.britannica.com). Paine was a successful writer for the Pennsylvania Magazine. His first

Common Sense was Paine s most influential piece (http://www.ushistory.org). In Paine s Common
Sense, there is a central theme that shows up in multiple works he wrote, Independence. He was
strongly against the government and supports this belief with a quote from his work Common Sense,
Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil
(http://www.earlyamerica.com). This quote supports his belief that people do not need the government
and that they should be independent. Supporting this belief, Paine states that the natural state of man is
to live without government (http://www.sparknotes.com) To get the central theme across Paine uses
many literary devices making the theme easier to be interpreted. He uses logos in this specific work
helping the theme to be established. An example of logos being used is in the title itself. The title,
Common Sense, could be interpreted as saying anyone who believes that America will be successful
under government rule has no common sense. Along with logos, Paine also uses biblical references
appealing to people s moral beliefs. Paine also uses allusion when he refers to the bible. As far as why
the work was written, typically an author writes their works based on their beliefs, views, or maybe an
event that could have occurred. Common Sense happens to be

The Most Memorable Events
I live in a world where I determine greatness by the number of memories that remain with me as I
grow older. It s almost a sport, trying as much as possible to create all these memorable events.
Everything I did, I ensured it would be something that stood out to me if I had to recall it, and
eventually, I reached a point where every event in my mind was just a jumble of stand out moments.
This, however, never stopped me from adding on to the endless list I had created. There is a fixed
pattern; if you want to make something memorable, do something out of the blue. I planned out every
last detail in my mind and ran through the series of events over and over till it sounded perfect to me.
Executing it was the least of my worries because once you ve got your mind set on something, it never
fails to go the way you want it to. One of the more memorable events was the proposal to my wife. I
remember it clearly in my mind, how I got down on one knee, how I waited while she took off the
blindfold and the tears of joy that followed after. That moment led to a cascade of events soon after,
creating a novel in my head. You see, it was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memories can be unforgettable, traumatic experiences that shake you to the very core of your
existence. However, as I have learned to plan everything out, I have only ever experienced one
negative incident. Those metal bars that were stronger than my living flesh, locked me away from the
glistening sun. The death threats, the nasty looks, the unforgiving guards, all because I wanted a pair
of shoes. My life saw its end then, and I just hoped for eyes to shut and never open again. I cried and
raged and bruised my body while slamming into those metal rods, and my mind lost all sense of
clearness. Not until three months later did I see my wife s blue eyes, holding our little baby in her
arms. I will never ever forget this, was my only thought, angry that my own game had got the better of

Pros And Cons Of The Two Party System
Left Wing, Right Wing, Broken Wing
Have you ever considered the American government is corrupt, even though they claim to uphold
certain American values? The two party system is just that: corrupt. Right now, the government offers
two parties, and even though it has its benefits, it has a lot more weaknesses. Although the two party
system offers stability and accessibility for citizens, it is broken and needs to be drastically changed
for the government to be actually of the people, by the people, for the people. The two party system
was born after the American revolution, when our representatives for each colony chose sides between
federalists and antifederalists. This later became what we know today as the Democratic party and the

The two party system needs to be changed or completely abolished, because it offers limited ideas and
opinions to run the country. The two parties have their own perspectives on issues such as gun control
or abortion; Craig Goodman of the University of Houston claims he doesn t think it s very democratic.
Why should you exclude someone because they are a small number, and they don t get to express
themselves? (Cargo 1). The two party does not allow the middle ground or smaller parties to really
have a say (Mathias 4). Most voters only know the leading independent and the two party nominees.
Kate Cargo describes the two party system leaves voter with low quality ideas and frankly, low quality
candidates (Cargo 1) while the third party candidate could have a great compromise on a hot issue, it
will never see the light of day. While the two party system does allow people to have easy access to
the opinions of the parties on these issues, it does not make up for the limited options we have. As a
country we need to have as many options as possible even if they are extreme. Accessibility is
important, but it should never limit our options.
Along with giving us limited opinions and ideas, the two party system often offers a repeat of
candidates. Hillary Clinton has ran for the office of president

Gender Disparities In Law Enforcement
Law enforcement agencies across the nation are facing challenging and complex issues that demand
tailored solutions. From immigration to technology to recruitment and retention, the challenges are far
reaching. To effectively communicate and connect with an audience, leaders must be able to adapt to
each generation, technology, and evolving statutes, which govern a democratic society. Leaders must
be able to communicate the message clearly to ensure that the receiver understands the correct
meaning and the intention of the message. Equally important, it is critical for leaders to communicate
well in order to motivate and inspire followers to accomplish greater achievements. The culmination
issues of immigration and crime, racial disparity, and advancing technology have become the
landscape for modern law enforcement. Twenty first century leaders must be prepared to not only
navigate the technological changes, but also effectively manage controversial issues, such as

Elizabethan Poor Laws and the Unworthy Poor Essay
Elizabethan Poor Laws and the Unworthy Poor
Tara McFadden
Indiana University School of Social Work
Abstract
Beginning in the Elizabethan Era, unworthy poor was a label placed on able bodied people that
appeared to choose to not work. They were often treated harshly and in extreme cases, put to death
(Shelly, 2011). In today s society such treatment would be unheard of. The act of even labeling this
group of people or other groups is discouraged and even against the NASW s The Code of Ethics
(2008). When faced with the multi billion dollar price tag of welfare, we need to make a distinction of
who is worthy or unworthy to receive government assistance. The question arises on how this can be
done without impeding the rights of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main sources for this reflection paper have been; classroom lectures and skit, The Code of Ethics
(National Association of Social Workers, 2008), and the section of the Encyclopedia of Social Work
on Social Policy History. The classroom experience that stood out for me was the privilege of being
included in an audience participation skit presented by Professors Vernon and Glassburn Larimer It
was based an actual town meeting in the Elizabethan period and included in it was how they dealt with
their unworthy poor (2011). In addition to these educational experiences, I have my own personal
experience of living off of the government for over two years along with my two children. Hindsight
now leads me to label myself unworthy poor since I was able bodied, yet unwilling to work. Examine
The audience participation skit allowed the class to have a unique learning experience on how a town
dealt with managing its citizens including the unworthy poor. It appeared the town leaders kept the
problems and solutions simple, if a person didn t work and was able to, the person was punished. (R.
Vernon, S. Glassburn Larimer, classroom skit, September 3, 2011). Curiosity leads me to question if
the town officials took into account any other issues that may have interfered with a citizen s desire to
work such as various mental health concerns; depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.

Salisbury Sage Diner s Character Analysis
I had just turned ten when my mom first took me to the Salisbury Chess Club. The dilapidated Sage
Diner dressed as if it were in the 50s (Absolute), I was immediately enamored by the chess pieces.
Soon, I established a reputation for myself as a capricious, impatient tactician able to beat all but the
most experienced players. I played with one of the better players, Phil (Appositive), almost every
week. Through those games, I learned many values, like patience and carefulness, that not only apply
to chess but also to life. One late Autumn Wednesday night, after my mom and I had just settled in the
Sage Diner (Preposition), I noticed that there were only a few players. Two of them had already began
a game, so I asked Phil for a chess game.

Themes Of The Outsiders
Sammy Davis Jr. once said You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fears . This
means you can chose to be scared and back off, or commit to face your fears without worrying about
what the consequences or the result will be when you make this choice. This relates to the choices
made in The Outsiders, because Johnny faces his fears face on, not backing off and instead,
committing. He does this to save the ones who he most cares about the most. Correspondingly, the
theme of The Outsiders is that committing and making choices that you may not like, may have a
beneficial, long term effect on the people around you. To begin with, Johnny stabs Bob, the Soc, with
his switchblade because Bob was about to brutally beat Johnny up with his rings on his bare hands and
his hurtful words from his crude, deceptive mouth. Johnny also stabs Bob because Bob s gang was
trying to drown Ponyboy, so if he was able to stab Bob then his nasty and cruel gang would leave
Ponyboy alone. When Johnny stabs Bob, his plan ends up working and the other socs runaway
because they got frightened at the sight of Johnny stabbing and killing their what used to be alive
friend. I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy. (56) Johnny says this to Ponyboy as he awakens;
coughing up water from nearly being drowned by Bob s gang. When the socs runaway they go and try
to find police. Because of this, Johnny and Ponyboy now have to run away in order for them not to be
caught and punished by

Research Paper On Digestion
Digestion: From beginning to end
Digestion, how you get your energy and nutrients, seems simple. However, it is actually a complex
process involving three organ systems and many stages.
When food is put in the mouth, the teeth grind it up into a paste and the amylase in the saliva begins to
break down the carbohydrates. Swallowing takes the food into the oesophagus and by peristalsis
moves it into the stomach. In the stomach, strong hydrochloric acid breaks down complex proteins
over a period of a few hours. The resulting mixture then moves into the small intestine, the start of
which is called the duodenum. Here, bile from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas mix into the
food. As the mixture moves down the small intestine, the enzymes ... Show more content on

However, respiration requires two ingredients glucose and oxygen. The glucose is obtained from
carbohydrates, but the oxygen must be taken from the air. The diaphragm contracts, expanding the
lung cavity and sucking in air through the mouth and nose. It passes through the trachea, splits into
two when it meets the bronchi and splits many more times through the bronchioles and into the
alveoli.
The blood passes through the vena cava and into the right side of the heart, where the valves
accelerate it towards the lungs through the pulmonary artery. It travels into capillaries and passes by
the alveoli, where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen in the alveoli is taken by the red blood cells and
carbon dioxide from the plasma is passed into the alveoli. The newly oxygenated blood travels
through the pulmonary vein and back into the theart, this time the left side of it. The blood gets
pumped through the aorta and other arteries before it gets to the cells it needs to go

  • 2. The Golden Age And The Golden Age I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover, Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age. In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however, reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have been able ... • 5. Essay about Comparing Billy Budd and Christ Comparing Billy and Christ in Billy Budd Herman Melville s Billy Budd provides us with a summation and conclusive commentary on the ambiguities of moral righteousness and social necessity. The conflict that arises pitting natural justice in opposition to military justice essentially deliberates over whether the sacrifice of the individual is required for the continuum and conservation of social order. The deep allegorical theme of the passion of Christ that resides in Billy Budd illustrates Melville s adjudication on this issue. The sacrifice of Billy Budd for the upholding of social order is an illusionary backdrop to Christ offering up His life for the forgiveness of the sins of mankind. Melville implements this theological staple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of Billy s appeal to his shipmates was due to his unparalleled feats of strength that had become canonized amongst them. Just as Jesus tales of miracle workings and deeds helped to further His legend, Billy s prodigious exploits and physical attributes in turn furthered his own: Tales of his prowess were recited. Ashore he was the champion; afloat the spokesman; on every suitable occasion always foremost (1486). The recantation of Billy manhandling Red Whiskers, who is openly hostile towards Billy, and subsequent winning of his allegiance, can be viewed as an allegorical tale of Jesus winning over the stubborn Simon Peter into His congregation of Apostles. Billy, like Christ, is a symbol of peace and unites the other sailors into a familial contingent: But Billy came; and it was like a Catholic priest striking peace in an Irish shindy. Not that he preached to them or said or did anything in particular; but a virtue went out of him, sugaring the sour ones (1488). The familial aspect of the crew is alluded to in the description of Billy not having any known relatives or family members: for Billy, as will shortly be seen, his entire family was practically invested in himself (1490). This idea goes along with Christian theology often invoking the image of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Collapse Of Indymac Bank The Collapse of IndyMac Bank In 2008 the world faced the worst financial crisis since the great depression. Many banks closed their doors for good that year. Among them were both small and large banks. One specific bank that collapsed that year was IndyMac, one of the largest banks in the United States. IndyMac marked the largest collapse of a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insured institution since 1984, when Continental Illinois, which had $40 billion in assets, failed, according to FDIC records ( The Fall of IndyMac 2008). This paper will talk about the cause of the collapse of IndyMac in 2008, the handling of the issues, as well as the aftermath of the collapse. IndyMac was created by David Loeb and Angelo Mozilo in 1985 and was originally called Countrywide Mortgage Investment. It was built to collect Countrywide Financial loans that were too large to be sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. IndyMac Bank was the largest savings and loan association in the Los Angeles area and the seventh largest mortgage originator in the United States ( Too Good to Be True: The Fall of IndyMac , 2008). In 1999, IndyMac loaned out record amounts. In the first quarter alone IndyMac loaned out $1.6 billion. In July of 2000, IndyMac became IndyMac Bank when it acquired SGV Bancorp. The total purchase cost was $62.5 million and it made IndyMac Bank the ninth largest bank at the time. IndyMac was also the 28th biggest lender in the country( Too Good to Be True: The Fall of ... • 7. The Assumption And Implication Of Good Faith Introduction When one party receives a check and transfers it, is the transferee a holder in due course? The response to this question is it depends on the facts and circumstances. The assumption and implication of good faith plays a role in determining a holder in due course. In our case, one party is attempting to take advantage of the other through fraud and deceit. Standard operating procedure at Any Kind requires supervisor approval of any check over $2,000. After checking Guarino s driver s license and asking the purpose of the check, supervisor Nancy Michael determined the check was valid. A Federal Express envelope validated this decision, despite an inability to contact Talcott. After deducting a five percent check cashing fee, Guarino received a $9,500 check. Six days later, Guarino returned to the same Any Kind location, presented a $5,700 check to the teller using similar proof, and required supervisor approval again. The teller spoke to Michael regarding the check, and she instructed the teller not to cash the check until she reached Talcott and received approval. Talcott approved the $5,700 check, but Any Kind did not mention the $10,000 check from the previous day. Any Kind cashed the second check after deducting a 3% fee. According to a 1993 study in the longitudinal consistency and change in self esteem form early adolescence to early childhood by Block and Robbins, between the ages of 14 and 23 exists the potential for great changes in how the self concept develops and is shaped. The study also concluded that more males increased their sense of self esteem during this time than did females. After people approach the age of 30, most self concepts remain relatively stable without significant conscious effort (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 63). A realistic self concept should change over time as it reflects the reality of current circumstances and previous experiences. The tendency, however, is to resist those changes and instead seek out others than confirm the self concept. The powerful effect that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. A Good Idea For The Green Party There is clear evidence that invasive species of plants and animals can cause grave consequences to native organisms. Charles Mann talks about this a lot in his book 1493, and provides his readers with several examples of this problem. Some people believe that strict laws should be enforced when it comes to the movement of plants, animals, and people between distant places. I m an environmental friendly person and even support the Green Party, but I completely disagree with this. I realize that this problem exists, but I do not believe that strictly enforcing laws against the movement of live organisms is a good idea. I believe that we should loosely limit and control organisms being moved. In Charles Mann s book, 1493, he talks about several problems throughout the world including the movement of organisms from one location to a foreign location. One example that Mann provides his readers with was, worms killing terraces in Ifugao (Mann 495). The worm species Pheretima and Polypheretima are invading terraces and killing them because of their hungry appetite. These giant earthworms came from oversees and can grow up to two feet in size. They leave huge tunnels and water sluices out of them, killing the rice plants at the same time (Mann 495). These worms are causing the terraces to become porous and sponge like, which should never be terms used for a terrace. • 12. Measuring The Quality Of Clusters Analysis Comparison For measuring the quality of clusters four criteria have been used. The first three criteria are designed so as to measure the quality of cluster sets at different levels of granularity. Ideally it s needed to generate partitions that have compact, well separated clusters. Hence, the criteria used presently combine the two measures to return a value that indicates the quality of the partition thus the value returned is minimized when the partition is judged to consist of compact well separated clusters with different criteria judging different partition as the best one. The last criterion is based on time efficiency. The term compactness and isolation are defined as follows: Compactness: This is a measure of cohesion or similarity of objects in an individual cluster with respect to the other objects outside the cluster. The greater the similarity the greater the compactness. Isolation: This is the measure of distinctiveness or dissimilarity between a cluster and the rest of the world. The smaller the similarity, the greater the isolation. Presently simple distance based measure are used to evaluate compactness and isolation (Manhattan Distance for the present work) has been used rather than statistical test of significance used in multivariate analysis of variance. In this section, whilediscussing about each of the criterion R_i represents an object or search result, C_j represents a cluster and C_jc its centroid. G_cis the global centroid. ... • 14. A Long Time Citizens For a long time citizens have always respected the soldiers who stand to protect the nation, but none care about how they do it or the psychological traumas they go through. After the Iraq War several disturbing photos were released to the public. People who were distraught like Susan Sontag spoke up and demanded an explanation for the events that took place in Abu Ghraib prison. Many have questioned why no punishment was given to the perpetrators, but were disappointed when no direct answer was given. Sontag tries to make a connection between the photos the military and their leaders, and what they portray about the American society in her piece Regarding The Torture Of Others. She displays acts of the military and their leaders showing justification in their act of torture to enemies outside the United States. The act of generalizing a nation by an event in its history is not effective and weakens her argument. This even has shaken the nation s image to the world, creating a different interpretation about America and its citizens, which might not be accurate. The photographs of the events that occurred in Abu Ghraib prison shows torture and abuse done to the prisoners by American soldiers. The photos taken show how the military took pride in abusing and torturing victims. The act of torturing prisoners gave the military a sense of achievement a memorable event that needed to be recorded. Fair value is the market value of a firm s assets and ignores any special benefits of the assets to the business resulting from competencies such as man management skills as well as any transaction costs (Hitz, 2007). Therefore a fair value measurement is market based rather than entity specific and it represents unbiased measurements that are consistent from period to period and across entities (Penman, S. H., 2007). This helps to reinforce consistency and comparability across various reporting entities. Fair Value measurements also have the property of objectivity as it is non entity specific and reflects the market s valuation as compared to entity specific measurements which are subject to managerial judgments (Whittington, 2010). Entity specific measurements account for intangibles such as business competencies and managerial know how, which gets reflected in the financial statements irrespective of whether they have been demonstrated or not. Using fair value limits today s profit recognition to amounts market participants would assess, and leaves to the future the recognition of profit associated with management skill and synergies (Barth, 2010). Hence we can conclude that market valuations incorporate market expectations regarding future cash flows in an efficient and unbiased manner (Hitz, 2007). It can also be argued that fair value ... Heritage is the essential part of a person s life, it is the very foundation that an individual future is built from. Heritage can be based on a family values, tradition and environment. Traditions, and cultural legacies come from grandparents or older relatives, they contribute to our family values. We all take the parts of the past that means the most to us, and combine it with the new traditions. In this paper, I will discuss what heritage is, the importance of how heritage identifies an individual, or can it inhibit an individual s self identity, and finally look at some family tradition that makes up one s heritage. What is heritage? First, heritage is a critical piece that represents who you are; it is the history of an individual. Heritage is something that you are born with or have inherited. This can be the color of your skin, an accent in the language that you speak, or the passing down of a unique item. Elizabethan Poor Laws and the Unworthy Poor Essay Elizabethan Poor Laws and the Unworthy Poor Tara McFadden Indiana University School of Social Work Abstract Beginning in the Elizabethan Era, unworthy poor was a label placed on able bodied people that appeared to choose to not work. They were often treated harshly and in extreme cases, put to death (Shelly, 2011). In today s society such treatment would be unheard of. The act of even labeling this group of people or other groups is discouraged and even against the NASW s The Code of Ethics (2008). This means you can chose to be scared and back off, or commit to face your fears without worrying about what the consequences or the result will be when you make this choice. This relates to the choices made in The Outsiders, because Johnny faces his fears face on, not backing off and instead, committing. He does this to save the ones who he most cares about the most. Correspondingly, the theme of The Outsiders is that committing and making choices that you may not like, may have a beneficial, long term effect on the people around you. To begin with, Johnny stabs Bob, the Soc, with his switchblade because Bob was about to brutally beat Johnny up with his rings on his bare hands and his hurtful words from his crude, deceptive mouth.
