The document discusses how to run applications on Amazon EC2. It covers choosing a region and availability zone, defining the architecture, selecting instance types, bootstrapping and configuring instances, deploying applications, and scaling. Key points include using Chef for configuration management, deploying with Capistrano hooks, and addressing issues with idempotency and documentation. The goal is to set up a browser game with 1.2 million daily users on over 130 EC2 instances to handle 120,000 requests per minute.
Overview of how to manage deployments and clusters in the Amazon cloud. Introduction into Chef. Presented by Jonathan Weiss at RailsCamp DE in Cologne.
Writing good, maintainable code is hard. You need a lot of experience with the framework to know the little tricks and pit-falls. In this session we take messy code and make it beautiful. We do this by going through examples and refactor them to be more resilient, easier to read, easier to test, and easier to maintain.

Much has changed in the MySQL world over the past few years with it being first bought by Sun and then gobbled by Oracle. So is it going to be sucked of oxygen or are Oracle serious about keeping MySQL popular and open?
The good news is that despite going quiet for a long while (one releases in 4+ years) it looks like Oracle have shown some love and rolled out significant changes and welcome improvements that improve the MySQL's overall maturity and performance.
This talk will walk through practical examples that demonstrate how these features can be best used.
Topics include:
With InnoDB being chosen over MyISAM as the default storage engine we'll explore the pros & cons of these and other table types.
A key to high availability is redundancy, so replication is vital. This talk will walk through real-world examples ranging from simple master-slave setups to more complex multi-master and multi-slave configurations.
Now that you have multiple servers up & running the next logical step is a look at the load balancing and failover features built into the latest JDBC drivers.
To round things out we'll examine options for backing up your mysql data and check out some of the new monitoring tools Oracle are providing as enterprise (i.e. non-free) add-ons.
This session was presented at Reboot IT conference in Bangalore, India. This session intends to introduce the Hyper-V Replica feature and the related technologies such as Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager.

OSv presentation from Linux Foundation Collaboration SummitDon Marti
OSv is a lightweight operating system designed to improve performance and administration for applications deployed in the cloud. Learn about the speed and manageability wins from a brand-new OS that works on your private or public cloud.
Cloud providers like Amazon or Goggle have great user experience to create and manage PaaS and IaaS services. But is it possible to reproduce same experience and flexibility locally, in on premise datacenter? This talk describes success story of creation private cloud based on DC/OS cluster. It is used to host and share different services like hadoop or kafka for development teams, dynamically manage services and resource pools with GKE integration.
What do the terms serverless, containers, and virtual machines mean? Which should I use to build my app? The answer (as always) is "it depends." In this session learn the tradeoffs between these different approaches, whether you're building your app from scratch or want to move an existing web or mobile application to the cloud. We'll discuss open source tools such as Kubernetes, Istio, and Knative, and we'll discuss Google Cloud Platform tools like Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), App Engine, and Cloud Functions.

Kubernetes vs dockers swarm supporting onap oom on multi-cloud multi-stack en...Arthur Berezin
Kubernetes vs Dockers Swarm supporting ONAP-OOM on multi-cloud multi-stack environment
Description: ONAP was set originally to support multiple container platform and cloud through TOSCA. In R1 ONAP and OOM is dependent completely on Kubernetes. As there are other container platforms such as Docker Swarm that are gaining more wider adoption as a simple alternative to Kubernetes. In addition operator may need the flexibility to choose their own container platform and be open for future platform. We need to weight the alternatives and avoid using package managers as Helm that makes K8s mandatory.
The use of TOSCA in conjunction with Kubernetes provides that "happy medium" where on one hand we can leverage Kubernetes to a full extent while at the same time be open to other alternative. In this workshop, we will compare Kubernetes with Docker Swarm and walk through an example of how ONAP can be set to support both platforms using TOSCA.
DCSF19 Transforming a 15+ Year Old Semiconductor Manufacturing EnvironmentDocker, Inc.
Jeanie Schwenk, Jireh Semiconductor
Jireh Semiconductor bought the Hillsboro fab and its contents including the manufacturing tools, servers, and software running the fab. The previous company had been winding down for years so server and software upgrades had not been on the radar for some time. In 2011 Jireh became the proud owner of the building, the tools, and its legacy software running on servers that weren’t even made any more.
That's when I started my adventure with Jireh in September 2016 with a charter to modernize the applications running the manufacturing facility process and move them into VMs with no impact to manufacturing. That led me down a path of exploration and questions. “What’s the goal?”
The goal wasn't to move to VMs. It was to become independent of the aging PA-RISC architecture, bring forward the ~230 java 1.4.2 applications (10-15 years old), scale to allow increased the load on the software and hardware in order to ramp the factory output to numbers never seen previously. And do it without manufacturing downtime.
The solution included a transition from waterfall and silo development to agile scrum. Rather than simply migrating to VMs, it became obvious the lynch pin for a successful software transition with the required uptime, flexibility, and scalability was Docker Enterprise.
Join me for this session where I'll talk about my journey modernizing 15+ year old applications and infrastructure at Jireh.
Presentation about unikernels and java held at JavaCRO 2016 conference.
Talk abstract:
Unikernels are specialized virtual machine images containing application code and only those part of operating system the application actually needs to operate. They provide many benefits compared to a traditional OS, including improved security, smaller footprints, more optimization and faster boot times. This talk will introduce the concept of unikernels and immutable infrastructure explaining how unikernels work and how to use them to optimize the resources application uses while running. A demo will be presented to show how to build and deploy java application as a unikernel application - bundled with its own specialized operating system.
Configuring and maintaining a continuous integration environment is quite a bit of work. It requires ongoing resources both in terms of manpower and hardware infrastructure. As an application evolves so does the number of ongoing projects. The challenge is creating a scalable continuous integration environment which does not impede development and can handle the complexities of Java EE testing. This session covers how to setup and configure a cloud-based continuous integration environment for Java EE applications.
The presentation will focus on demonstrating how to use Atlassian Bamboo running on AWS to build and test a Maven/Gradle Java EE project that uses Arquillian for testing. Topics that will be covered include creating a custom AWS VM for use with Bamboo, creating an Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) along with test database using Amazon RDS. The presentation will delve into the specifics of testing EJBs, WebSocket endpoints, RESTful web services, as well as performing load testing in this environment. Security, cost control, and build monitoring will be covered as well.
