An introduction into Backbone.js – a lightweight MVC framework. Backbone supplies structure to JavaScript-heavy applications by providing models with key-value binding and custom events, collections with a rich API of enumerable functions, views with declarative event handling, and connects it all to your existing application over a RESTful JSON interface.
Build your own clouds with Chef and MCollectiveJonathan Weiss
One important part of the DevOps movement is infrastructure automation, especially if you are running your application on top of services like Amazon EC2.
Everybody's dream is to be able to bootstrap and deploy hundreds or even thousands of machines with a few simple commands. This talk will tell you how you can do this using Open Source tools like Chef and mcollective. Chef manages your servers configuration using a nice Ruby DSL while mcollective orchestrates and commands all your nodes.
Docker at Shopify: From This-Looks-Fun to Production by Simon Eskildsen (Shop...Docker, Inc.
Since July 2014 Shopify's been serving thousands of requests per second of production web traffic from Docker containers. This was an 8 month effort, with multiple pivots of direction from the team—and we're only getting started. This talk covers the lessons learned through the trial and error of an in-flight architecture redesign, spanning hundreds of hosts, as well as the technical vision of the future of our platform.
(APP313) NEW LAUNCH: Amazon EC2 Container Service in Action | AWS re:Invent 2014Amazon Web Services
Container technology, particularly Docker, is all the rage these days. At AWS, our customers have been running Linux containers at scale for several years, and we are increasingly seeing customers adopt Docker, especially as they build loosely coupled distributed applications. However, to do so they have to run their own cluster management solutions, deal with configuration management, and manage their containers and associated metadata. We believe that those capabilities should be a core building block technology, just like EC2. Today, we are announcing the preview of Amazon EC2 Container Service, a new AWS service that makes is easy to run and manage Docker-enabled distributed applications using powerful APIs that allow you to launch and stop containers, get complete cluster state information, and manage linked containers. In this session we will discuss why we built the EC2 Container Service, some of the core concepts, and walk you through how you can use the service for your applications.

Kubernetes your tests! automation with docker on google cloud platformLivePerson
Arik Lerner, Automation Team Leader, and Waseem Hamshawi, Automation Infra Developer, present how to build a large scale automated testing platform by leveraging containers orchestration over GCP, with the ability to scale out and provide fast feedback while maintaining a highly reliable test infrastructure.
The presentation includes new approach of managing a scalable testing platform of distributed automated tests with Kubernetes and Docker over Google Cloud Platform.
Topics:
• GCP and Kubernetes introduction for automated testing
• Traditional Selenium Grid vs Selenium Standalone with Kubernetes and Docker for Web and Mobile tests
• Distributed and containerized testing environment over container cluster - different use cases
Ephemerals - "Short-lived Testing Endpoints". An Open Source by LivePerson which makes automation testing at large scale like a "Walk in the park".
This session covers new improvements that will be introduced in WildFly 9:
• Wildfly-core will be extracted from the codebase and the ability to assemble a server on top of it will be introduced. WildFly 9 will be provided in two versions: Wildfly Web and Wildfly Full but users will be able to create their custom packaging of WildFly.
• Users will be able to shutdown the application server in a graceful manner - after the shutdown command is executed server will reject new requests and allow existing requests to finish before it shuts down.
• Support for HTTP/2, a new version of HTTP protocol based on SPDY, will be introduced.
• Users will be able to use WildFly as a load balancer. Consequently, it will be possible to manage the balancer with the same tools that are used to manage the rest of the domain. What is more, users will be able to use more efficient protocols, such as HTTP/2, for communication between the balancer and backend servers.
• An OpenShift cartridge, which will enable users to use WildFly 9 in cloud environment, will be provided.
• WildFly 9 will use OpenJDK ORB library instead of JacORB.

SQL Server is coming to Linux in the next major version of SQL Server. Having SQL Server in Linux containers makes it much easier for dev/test, CI/CD, and build automation pipelines to be automated. This session describes some of the common challenges currently faced in trying to use SQL Server in Linux containers and how to overcome them. Integration with Red Hat Open Shift is also discussed.
Wouldn't it be great for a new developer on your team to have their dev environment totally set up on their first day? What about having your CI tests running in the background while you work on new features? What about having the confidence that your dev environment mirrors testing and prod? Containers enable this to become reality, along with other great benefits like keeping dependencies nice and tidy and making packaged code easier to share. Come learn about the ways containers can help you build and ship software easily.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
