Rails is optimised for the first weeks of development. At the later phases it's no longer the speed of adding new views and data that matters. It's often more about the different (and changing!) ways of using the data. The business logic gets more complicated.
DDD has answers to those problems. Detecting the bounded contexts is the crucial skill. Choose which parts of the app leave as CRUD and which could go into more of the tactical DDD.
Rails applications are always fun for the first 2 months. After some time, the initial conventions don't always fit the project. The controllers get fat, the models get fat, and the views gather more logic. How to deal with this complexity?
We'll show how to apply typical refactoring recipes to put the code back in order. You'll see examples of service objects and other patterns. All of that using the RubyMine refactoring support, extended with custom shortcuts.

We built event-driven user interfaces for decades. What about bringing the same approach to mobile, web, and IoT backend applications? You have to understand how data flows and what is the propagation of changes, using reactive programming techniques. You can focus on the core functionalities to build and the relationships among the resources you use. Your application behaves similarly to a “spreadsheet”, where depending resources are updated automatically when something “happens”, and is decomposed into scalable microservices without having to manage the infrastructure. The resulting architecture is efficient and cost effective to run on AWS and managing availability, scalability and security becomes part of the implementation itself.

Event sourcing is a great way to implement event-driven microservices. When one service updates an entity, the new events are consumed by other services, which then update their own state.

Apache Kafka is a popular distributed streaming data platform. A Kafka cluster stores streams of records (messages) in categories called topics. It is the architectural backbone for integrating streaming data with a Data Lake, Microservices and Stream Processing. Data sources flowing into Kafka are often native data streams such as social media streams, telemetry data, financial transactions and many others. But these data stream only contain part of the information. A lot of data necessary in stream processing is stored in traditional systems backed by relational databases. To implement new and modern, real-time solutions, an up-to-date view of that information is needed. So how do we make sure that information can flow between the RDBMS and Kafka, so that changes are available in Kafka as soon as possible in near-real-time? This session will present different approaches for integrating relational databases with Kafka, such as Kafka Connect, Oracle GoldenGate and bridging Kafka with Oracle Advanced Queuing (AQ).
We will take an introductory look at CouchDB with a brief review of the NoSQL movement. We will spend most of the time in actual code and examples from real projects and the Futon web interface, giving a better feeling for what's going on. Plenty of time for Q&A.
