This slide show is from my presentation on what JSON and REST are. It aims to provide a number of talking points by comparing apples and oranges (JSON vs. XML and REST vs. web services).
1. The document discusses several popular JavaScript frameworks including AngularJS, Node.js, Agility.js, and Backbone.js. It provides overviews of each framework and their architectures.
2. AngularJS is an open-source framework maintained by Google that assists with single-page applications. Node.js is a platform for scalable server-side applications. Agility.js is a lightweight MVC library, and Backbone.js helps organize code for single-page apps.
3. Each framework has advantages like reusability, testability and being lightweight, though some have disadvantages like learning curves or added complexity. The document provides examples of applications that use each framework.
NGRX provides tools for implementing Redux patterns in Angular applications. The key components are:
- The Store holds the single source of truth application state as plain JavaScript objects and uses reducers to immutable update state in response to actions.
- Actions describe state changes and are dispatched to the Store which passes them to reducers. Reducers pure functions that return new state.
- Selectors allow slices of state to be accessed.
- Additional libraries provide debugging with devtools, routing integration, side effect handling, and entity management functionality. Files can be organized by domain or feature module.
Introduction to the SharePoint Client Object Model and REST APIRob Windsor
As Microsoft was releasing SharePoint 2013 it was pretty clear that they were steering people away from using the product as a portal to using it as a gateway to external systems and services. Since the Server Object Model cannot be used remotely, developers building these external systems will need to become familiar with the Client Object Model (CSOM) and/or the REST API if they want to communicate with SharePoint. This session will introduce these two APIs, give a brief overview of their history, and then show you how to get started using them through a series of demonstrations.

This document discusses moving away from an ActiveRecord pattern to using events and CQRS architecture. It describes capturing all changes as a sequence of events stored in an event store. Events are raised by domain models and handled asynchronously. Reads and writes are separated, with denormalized data stored in a read database. This allows for simpler domain models focused on objects and events rather than data access. Code examples demonstrate raising domain events, handling commands, and updating read models from stored events.
Domain Driven Design (DDD) is an approach to software development that connects implementation to an evolving domain model. Its core concepts include the domain, model, ubiquitous language, and bounded context. Key building blocks are entities, value objects, aggregates, aggregate roots, services, repositories, units of work, and factories. Entities have identity and continuity while value objects are defined by attributes and treated as immutable. Aggregate roots compose other entities to ensure validity. Domain objects describe the system and are technology-agnostic. Repositories abstract data access while units of work coordinate changes. Services provide infrastructure, domain logic, and application interfaces. Factories create domain objects for interchangeability.
React JS is a JavaScript library for building reusable UI components. It uses a virtual DOM for efficient rendering. Components are the building blocks of React, and can be either functional or class-based. Functional components are simpler while class components can maintain state. Props are passed down from parent to child components while state is local. The virtual DOM improves performance by only updating the real DOM with actual changes.
React JS is a declarative, efficient, and flexible JavaScript library for building reusable UI components. It uses a virtual DOM which works like a lightweight copy of the real DOM to improve performance by only updating what changes. Components are independent and reusable bits of code that serve the same purpose as functions but return HTML. There are two main types of components - functional components which are simple functions, and class components which can maintain their own state and work together.

This document discusses web application architecture and frameworks. It argues that frameworks should not dictate project structure, and that the code should separate domain logic from infrastructure logic. This allows focusing on the core problem domain without concerning itself with technical details like databases or web requests. It also advocates splitting code into ports that define intentions like persistence, and adapters that provide framework-specific implementations, allowing for independence of the domain logic from any particular framework or technology. This architecture, known as hexagonal or ports and adapters, facilitates testing, replacement of parts, and future-proofing of the application.
Patterns (contd)Software Development ProcessDesign patte.docxdanhaley45372
Patterns (contd)
Software Development Process
Design patterns used to handle change
More time extending and changing code than developing it.
The Strategy design pattern handle change by selecting from a family of external algorithms rather than rewrite.
Design point: Make code closed for modification of code, but open for extension
Problem
Computer object created
Description Method returns
Getting a Computer
Problem
Program has to change every time
Customer changes options
Decorator Pattern
Wrapper code used to extend your core code
Extend a class dynamically at runtime
Decorator uses wrapper code to extend core functionality - decorating the code
Decorator Pattern
description() returns “You are getting a computer”
Wrapper description() returns
“You are getting a computer and a disk”
Wrapper description() returns
“You are getting a computer and a disk and a monitor”
Decorator Pattern
Core component: Computer
Variables holding computer objects should also be able to hold objects that wrap computer objects.
Extend the wrapper classes from the Computer class.
Abstract class cannot be instantiated
Ensures all wrappers are consistent
Developers have to provide their own description
Decorator Pattern
Method calls the core computer object’s
description method and adds “and a disk”
Decorator Pattern
Method calls the core computer object’s
description method and adds “and a disk”
Extend the core object by wrapping it in decorator wrappers. Avoids modification of the core code.
Each successive wrapper called the description method of the object it wrapped and added something to it.
Factory Pattern
Based on type, call the
Connection method
Factory Pattern
Create a method that returns the
correct connection type
Factory Pattern
New operator used to create OracleConnection objects.
New operator used to create SqlServerConnection objects, and MySqlConnection objects.
New operator to instantiate many different concrete classes
Code becomes larger and needs to be replicated in many places
Factor that code out into a method.
Code keeps changing
Encapsulate code into a factory object
Goal: Separate out the changeable code and leave the core code closed for modification
Building the Factory
Creating the Factory
FirstFactory class encapsulates the connection object creation
Pass to it the type of connection (“Oracle”, “SQL Server”,)
Use the factory object to create connection objects with a factory method named createConnection
Building the Factory

Flutter is an open-source SDK developed by Google that allows building high-performance mobile apps for both Android and iOS using a single codebase; it works by compiling to native code instead of using widgets from each platform's SDK, and uses a reactive widget-based framework instead of traditional MVC or MVVM architectures. Flutter provides its own set of customizable widgets that serve as the building blocks for apps and handles layout, design, and business logic.
This document discusses how to use Naked Objects, an open source framework, to implement domain-driven design. Naked Objects encapsulates business logic and data access within domain objects and automatically renders user interfaces directly from those objects. This allows for a "DRY" approach where the domain model defines both the application logic and user interface. The document outlines various features of the Naked Objects framework, including different deployment options, persistence mechanisms, and viewer plugins that can be used. It argues that Naked Objects is a useful tool for prototyping domain-driven design applications and getting started with DDD.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Domain Driven Design in Rails
1. Domain Driven Design
With emphasis on Repository Pattern
Application: Where do my domain objects come from and go to?
Repository: That’s none of your business!
Presented at November Ruby Lightning Talks T.O.
2. Rails Controller Layer
❖ Connects a request with a response, delegates all the business logic in
between to the model layer, and the presentation logic to the view layer
3. Rails View Layer
❖ Takes data from a controller and assembles a response
❖Some view layer components:
➢ Templates
➢ Partials
➢ Serializers
➢ View Helpers
4. Rails Model Layer
❖ All the business logic that takes place between request and response!
❖Fat ActiveRecord models can only go so far
❖DDD to the rescue!
5. Entity
❖An object that is identified by its identity
❖In other words, an entity has an identity
❖Changing an entity’s properties does not change its identity
❖Examples
➢ A user of an application with authentication
6. Value Object
❖An object with values but lack an identity
❖Should be treated as immutable
❖Two value objects with the same values are indistinguishable
❖Changing a value object’s properties yields a different value object
❖Example
7. Aggregate
❖A collection of objects that are bound together by a root entity known as
the aggregate root
❖Objects external to the aggregate can only hold reference to the aggregate
root and nothing else in the aggregate
❖Changes to the aggregate are done through the aggregate root to ensure
consistency
9. Service
❖ Carries out an operation that does not conceptually belong to any object
❖Examples
➢ A user purchases a product in an e-commerce application (ProcessTransaction)
➢ A new user registers in an application (RegisterUser)
➢ A user confirms an email verification (ConfirmUserEmailVerification)
10. Factory
❖ Carries out the operation of creating and initializing objects
❖Not responsible for persisting objects that get created
❖Example
➢ A BlogFactory that generates a blog from author, title and body text
11. Abstract Factory
❖ Specifies an interface for factories
❖Example
➢ A phone abstract factory that creates or gets inherited by iPhone 6 factory, Nexus 7
factory, and Galaxy S6 factory
13. Repository
❖One of the major structural patterns encountered in DDD
❖Mediator between application and data storage layers
❖Solely responsible for fetching objects and persisting objects
❖Exposes an interface that deals with object collections
❖Usage is controversial with ORMs such as ActiveRecord
14. Benefits of using repositories
❖An explicit layer that exposes data access to the application
➢ No query builders in controllers and models!
➢ Consistent query logic when queries are reused
❖Flexibility of using multiple persistence strategies without spilling that
knowledge to the application
➢ ActiveRecord, Raw SQL, Redis, MongoDB, memory, CSV, etc.
15. ❖ Allow object access decisions to be clearly communicated
➢ User can only be retrieved by ID, username or email
❖Hide multiple data sources!
➢ SoA with multiple distinct databases
➢ Aggregate of objects persisted in different databases?
More benefits of using repositories...
