This circuit allows remote control of home appliances like lamps or fans using an IR TSOP1738 sensor and CD4017 decade counter IC. The IR signal from the remote is received by the TSOP1738 and amplified by a transistor before being fed to the CD4017 IC. The CD4017 switches between red and green LEDs to indicate appliance power state and uses another transistor to drive a relay that physically turns the appliance on or off by connecting it to the main power supply. The circuit can be operated remotely from up to 10 meters away.

Solution
RS-232 is the most common serial interface and ships as a standard component on most Windows-compatible desktop computers. RS-232 only allows for one transmitter and one receiver on each line. RS-232 also uses a Full-Duplex transmission method. Some RS-232 boards sold by National Instruments support baud rates up to 1 Mbit/s, but most devices are limited to 115.2 kbits/s. Note that RS-422/RS-485 interface is not available on most IBM PCs.
RS-422 (EIA RS-422-A Standard) is the serial connection used on Apple computers. It provides a mechanism for transmitting data up to 10 Mbits/s. RS-422 sends each signal using two wires to increase the maximum baud rate and cable length. RS-422 is also specified for multi-drop applications where only one transmitter is connected to, and transmits on, a bus of up to 10 receivers.
20 mA Current loop: The current loop interface for serial data communications is used in a number of applications. As the name implies, the current loop serial data communications scheme uses the level of current instead of voltage to provide the signalling method. Often the scheme is called a 20mA current loop interface in view of the standard level of current that is often used.

Rs 422
RS-422 is a telecommunications standard for binary serial communications between devices such as computers and printers. It uses a balanced four-wire system with two wires for transmitting from the data terminal equipment to the data communications equipment and two wires for transmitting in the opposite direction. RS-422 has advantages over RS-232 such as higher data rates, longer cable lengths, and better noise rejection, though it is only unidirectional and less common.
Max 232
The MAX232 device is a dual driver/receiver that converts between TTL/CMOS and EIA-232 voltage levels to allow RS-232 communication over longer distances and higher speeds than the RS-232 standard specifications. It includes a capacitive voltage generator to supply the necessary EIA-232 voltages from a single 5V supply. Each receiver converts EIA-232 inputs to 5V TTL/CMOS levels, while each driver converts TTL/CMOS inputs to EIA-232 levels.

- 1. RS-232
- 2. What is RS-232 ? RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232). It is basically a interface standards. It is commonly used in computer serial ports. The standard defines the electrical characteristics and timing of signals. The current version of the standard is TIA-232-F ,issued in 1997.
- 3. History of RS-232 RS-232 was first introduced in 1962. For many years, an RS-232-compatible port was a standard feature for serial communication. The standard continued to be revised and updated by the Electronic Industries Alliance and since 1988 by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The C revision of the standard was issued in August 1969.

- 5. Architecture of RS-232 Architecturally RS-232 is a bi-directional point to point link. Two independent channels are established for two-way (full duplex) communications. RS-232 can also carry additional signals used for flow control (RTS, CTS) and modem control (DCD, DTR,DSR, RI).

Limitation of RS-232 The limited transmission speed, relatively large voltage swing, and large standard connectors motivated development of the universal serial bus(USB) which has displaced RS-232. Multi-drop connection among more than two devices is not defined. Also multi-drop have limitations in speed and compatibility.
