2. CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Self-confidence tends to focus on the individual’s future performance. It is a strong
feeling of self-belief which is commonly used when one needs self-assurance. It gives us a boost
to do something that fears us. There are number of people possess it and many people are
achieving their goals because of self-confidence. For us students, confidence plays a role to our
school life. The more confident we are, makes more chances of success. Additionally, self
confidence brings us more happiness. Usually, when you are confident about what you can do it
makes you happy and feel more motivated to achieve our goals.
It is important that we tackle about self-confidence and how we should face them
since there are a lot of issues about people with low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is a
combination of anxiety and depression. People often spend their time criticizing themselves
which it is possible that it may lead them to suicide. Bad childhood experiences, bullying, and
personal problems may cause low self-esteem.
The Importance of self-confidence in students helps them develop social skills,
withstand from difficult conditions or situations, and to embrace their full potential. Self
confidence helps improve relationships, motivation, and more resilience. In other words, self
confidence allows us to break out from our negative thoughts and makes us more willing to face
and take risky challenges in life, having greater freedom from anxiety. Students having self
confidence and resilience will make them feel more at ease without worrying anything. They will
be able to withstand failure, learn from their mistakes, and try again. This will make them learn
about their self-worth.
3. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Many people are experiencing or has experienced lack of self-confidence, specially,
teenage life. For example, some of them are comparing how they look to their friends,
comparing their grades, comparing their life with someone who is privilege, and many more.
These are the possible causes why one individual has low self-confidence and low self-esteem.
Having lack of self-confidence is a normal behavior of a person. Self-confidence is likely
the most used term for these related concepts outside of psychology research, but there is still
some confusion about what exactly is the true meaning self-confidence. Base on one of the most
self-confidence refers to it as “simply believing in oneself.” Another popular article defines self-
confidence as “an individual’s expectations of performance and self-evaluation of abilities and prior
performance.”
Psychology defines self-confidence as an individual’s trust in his or her own abilities,
capacities and judgements, or belief that he or she can successfully face day to day challenges and
demands.
Self – confidence brings about more happiness. Typically, when you are confident in
your abilities you are happier due to your success. Also, when you are feeling better about your
capabilities, the more energized and motivated you are to take action and achieve your goals.
But nowadays, many students are experiencing a motivate self-confidence that they always feel
that their world is dangerous, they were afraid to handle a situation, they are afraid to show
their thoughts and emotions resulting hesitation to express themselves that can affect their
academic performance in school.

8. CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Local Literature
According to (Bandura, 1986) self-confidence is considered one of the most influential
motivators and regulators of behavior in people’s everyday lives. A growing body of evidence
suggests that one’s perception of ability or self-confidence is the central mediating construct of
achievement strivings.
As explained by (Crawford, 2019) Your environment has a big impact on who you are and how
you feel. The same is said for our confidence levels. Our environment can make us feel more or
less confident depending on what’s around us most, how we feel about it, and how it impacts our
mental and emotional health. Other people with confidence or big personalities can sabotage our
own. This is because of our old-time favourite thing comparison.
In line with (Jacqui,2018) children that grow up in unstable households tend to have lower self-
confidence and self-esteem and often end up carrying that burden with them throughout their
entire lives. The people that you spend time around have a considerable influence on your
confidence. Your friends can help you build your self-confidence, your self-image, and self-
respect, or they can bring it down.
9. Foreign Literature
Based on (Markway, 2018) self-confidence is linked to almost every element involved in a
happy and fulfilling life. Understanding these benefits is an important first step toward living
your best life with confidence. Less fear and anxiety. The more confident you become, the more
you’ll be able to calm the voice inside you. Excessive rumination is linked to both anxiety and
depression, and it can make us withdraw from the world. Greater motivation. Building
confidence means taking small steps that leave a lasting sense of accomplishment. With self-
assurance, those thoughts will no longer be paralyzing. More resilience. As you keep pushing
yourself to try new things, you’ll start to truly understand how failure and mistakes lead to
growth. Improved relationships. Stronger sense of your authentic self. You’ll be able to accept
your weaknesses, knowing they don’t change your self-worth.
In the light of (Wheeler, 2018) self-awareness helps us become at peace with who we are
and better manage our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and reactions. Self-awareness is the
foundation on which we will build confidence because it separates the real from the perceived.
If we truly understand what’s real, instead of believing false things about ourselves, we have a
better chance at being confident. Greater self-awareness leads to greater self-confidence. Being
deeply aware of who we are, what we value and what we’re good at are the key foundations
for building confidence and making it a habit. Remember that confidence is our ability to
believe in ourselves.
As per (Festinger, 1954) claimed that social networking sites lead many people to do self-
evaluations and make social comparisons between themselves and others based on social
classes, social roles, beauty, popularity, wealth accumulation and other social functions. People
engage in two types of comparisons on social networking sites, upward and downward
comparison. The former one is the comparison between an individual and those superior from
him and possessing positive attributes while the latter one marks the comparison between an
individual and those inferior than him and possessing negative attributes.
10. Furthermore (Dunn, 2016), nobody is born with limitless self-confidence. If someone
seems to have incredible self-confidence, it’s because he or she has worked on building it for
years. Visualize yourself as you want to be. Visualization is the technique of seeing an image of
yourself that you are proud of, in your own mind. When we struggle with low self-confidence,
we have a poor perception of ourselves that is often inaccurate. Practice visualizing a fantastic
version of yourself, achieving your goals. Start by setting yourself small goals that you can win
easily. Once you have built a stream of successes that make you feel good about yourself, you
can then move on to harder goals. Make sure that you also keep a list of all your achievements,
both large and small, to remind yourself of the times that you have done well.
Conforming to (Morin et.al, 2019) self-confidence is defined as a feeling of trust in one’s
abilities, qualities, and judgment. Self-confidence is important to your health and psychological
well-being. Having a healthy level of self-confidence can help you become successful in your
personal and professional life. When you believe in yourself, you’ll be more willing to try new
things. Ultimately, you’ll perform better when you feel confident. Stop Comparing Yourself to
Others. Exercise boosts self confidence. Researchers found that people who compared
themselves to others, experienced envy. And the more envy they experienced, the worse they
felt about themselves. Take care of your body. It’s hard to feel good about yourself if you’re
abusing your body. A 2016 study published in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment found
that regular physical activity improved participants’ body image. And when their body image
improved, they felt more confident. Practice self-compassion.
As claimed by (Omoike, 2017) self-confidence is not shallow. It’s a deep sense of self
awareness within you that makes you confident without the clothes or modern-day armor we
love to cover ourselves in. Self-confidence makes you attractive. You need to be able to attract
the right kind of people into your life. Self-confidence helps you aim for things you only dream
about. If you want to live the life of your dreams, you need to be confident Self-confidence
helps you make the right decisions. When you are self-confident, you choose yourself. Most
people who lack self-confidence love to please people. They don’t choose themselves. Because
they don’t, they make the wrong decisions. The more you make the right decisions aligned with
11. your deepest desires and your core values, the faster you will achieve your goals. Self
confidence makes you productive You need to be productive and manage your time wisely.
Consistent with (Nyagah et.al 2015) researchers have identified the major benefits and
advantages of social networking sites. For example, Facebook gives individuals a sense of
freedom and identity, boosts up the confidence level of individuals and cheers them up during
hard times. It also helps shy and introvert students, who find it difficult to initiate conversation,
to build social capital as it reduces the level of restrictions involved in communication and offers
a forum to build healthy and strong bonds and relationships. Many introverts build relationships
through social networking sites because usually they find difficulties during face to face dealings.
