eam Concepts is a Leadership Development and Team Building company founded by World
Champion and Olympic oarsman, Dan Lyons. Dan's background competing and coaching
elite level teams for over 20 years as well as his experience as a retired Naval Commander
(Annapolis Academy Graduate) has formed the foundation of the Team
Concepts Inspirational Leadership™ philosophy. Dan has culled together a Team of athletes,
academics, business leaders, military professionals and artists from every field of endeavor with
expertise in high performance leadership. Based on Dan’s expertise in observing and coaching
High Performance Teams, Team Concepts has developed a unique and proven Leadership
Development process of Integrated Learning combining academic instruction with innovative,
entertaining, experiential programs that are designed to get teams out of their comfort zones and
guide them to think critically about their leadership style and how to manifest a culture of high
performance achievement throughout their organization. In addition to our work in the corporate
sector we are pleased to be partnered with the leading Executive Education programs in the
country including: The Wharton School, The Darden School, Emory University, Columbia University
and Thayer Leadership Academy (at West Point).
This powerful combination provides the framework for building and maintaining high performance
teamwork. Our fundamental belief is that you if you are going to engage real transformational
leadership cross organizationally you have to tap into "the hand, the heart and the head" to drive
successful organizational change. Through the Integrated Learning process teams are constantly
engaged and coached from those "who have walked the walk" with regards to leadership,
incorporating your organization’s critical areas of focus while teaching teams in a practical hands
on way how to build and sustain high performance teamwork cross organizationally.
Our Integrated Learning approach combines several key elements:
! Experiential Learning: Participants are divided into teams, emphasizing the psychology of
bonding mechanisms. Teams are introduced to challenging but fun experiential programs
such as rowing, film-making or Olympic Festival games emphasizing elements of stress,
time, and competition to heighten awareness and open participants up to learning.
! Seminar: Dan Lyons leads participants through the Inspirational Leadership™ philosophy
he developed from his background competing on the world stage, his military service and
study of high performance teams. The seminar component always links the observations
from the experiential event.
! Break-out Learning: Teams break out to discuss the internal issues facing the group and its
Global implications for the company and develop strategic road maps toward achieving
their goals.
! Assessments: Personality profiles such as MBTI, Birkman, Belbin, 360 Leadership Inventory,
and Positive Psychology based assessments can also be administered to help identify
team traits, skill sets and personality types to help understand inner-team dynamics.
The Team Concepts approach emphasizes the importance of creating teams that are fully
engaged at all times. Programs are never ‘static’ with an ‘authority based’ figure speaking at
participants. The Leadership process weaves the goals of your company, narrative, and action-
learning with an Inspirational Leadership™ approach.

Leadership through Team Concepts signature Team Champion (Rowing) experience. The
objectives of this program are:
! Create a powerful bonding experience that will strengthen the ties that bind among the
XYZ Company Management Team
! How to shape a powerful vision of the future, create energy and excitement around that
vision
! Emphasis on Teamwork and how to Create and Lead High Performance Teams.
! Additional topics maybe covered and further developed at client’s request.
The staff of Team Concepts is comprised of individuals who have expectations for high
performance, and have already achieved at a high level - Olympic medalists, world champions,
scholars, and leaders of industry. With this program, the XYZ Company Team and Team Concepts
will become a team dedicated to training XYZ Company leaders in high performance teamwork.
TEAM CHAMPION:
Team Concepts will provide an exciting catalyst program of integrated learning based on the sport
of rowing. This catalyst program will instill in its participants the Inspirational Leadership philosophy.
Rowing—known as the ultimate team sport—will be used as an experiential element in this program.
Team Concepts has assembled an accomplished staff of individuals dedicated to the sport of
rowing. Dan Lyons, the company founder and President, is a member of the US Rowing Hall of
Fame, as is Carol Bower and Ted Nash, two Team Concepts Associates. Each has represented the
US in Olympic competition, and together they have amassed dozens of championships, including
Olympic, World, and Pan American Games gold medal victories.
For 15 years, Team Concepts has specialized in training novice corporate teams to row and race in
a safe and fun learning environment. Participants are divided into learning teams in which the
psychology of bonding mechanisms are highlighted and a journey of discovery into their leadership
styles begins. Rowing is a team sport in which technique, discipline, and mental tenacity combine
to determine the success of a particular boat. Each eight-person crew is required to draw upon
each other’s strengths in order to move the boat effectively. Teamwork is not just ideal but is
essential to achieve performance and flow in the boat.

Program Description
The Team Concepts Team Champion Rowing program will follow Team Concepts’ unique method
of integrated learning, consisting of experiential, classroom, and motivational elements, as
described below. Your team will be taking part in its own Regatta - including training, a race, and
medal ceremony.
Seminar & Breakout Sessions
Team Concepts leadership philosophy of Inspirational Leadership will be presented by Dan Lyons.
The seminar component will be delivered after each experiential component in the day directly
relating observations made on the water. The Inspirational Leadership™ philosophy will be directly
linked to the leadership goals of the XYZ Company Management Team and re-enforced in the
team break-out sessions.
Team Formation
Your group will be divided into equal teams. The team members will be provided with team shirts,
and hats, and each team will be assigned a rowing shell (boat), coach, and supporting crew. They
will be asked to create banners that reflect their team’s unique personality, objectives, and unifying
forces. Teams will develop a name, motto, symbol/mascot, and goal that reflect their
commonalities as individuals. This process demonstrates the basic elements of team bonding and
acts as a mechanism for group formation and synergy.
Experiential Component
After an on-land introduction and ergometer (rowing machine) training, the teams will be trained to
row together during a two-hour experiential session on the water. While on the water, professional
coaches and athletes will emphasize the themes of Inspirational leadership and high performance
teamwork.
The on-water program involves physical activity, although participants are able to take part within
the limits of their own abilities. Each individual is required to sign a standard waiver, a copy of which
will be made available upon request. In instances where the participant is physically unable to take
part in the rowing, he or she will be assigned a role to support a team in the coaching and training
component of the activity.

I find the Eight Secrets to be so powerful in their truth and simplicity that I carry a copy of them with
me wherever I go. Team Concepts has helped transform the culture of Vanguard over the past
three years.

The Team Concepts’ “Leading Teams for Growth & Change” was the best adult Executive
Education program I’ve ever participated in.
Mark Rossi

I wanted to add my kudos and share the evaluation summary from participants. Bravo! We love
working with Team Concepts for a number of reasons – most importantly you treat us as a partner
which engenders trust. Thank you!

I am obviously a huge believer in the system. It is by far the best exercise of translating the concept
to team building to actual practice I’ve ever been involved with.
Rick Martin
Director M&I Strategic Accounts
I want to thank-you for the great job you and your staff did for our sales team with your wonderful
program on the “Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership.” The unique nature of the day was
highlighted by the intense, but fun, competitive exercises, motivational talks, and the breakout
sessions that allowed everyone in the group the opportunity to learn and apply the lessons of the
course to our challenging work environment. Your Olympic experiences and video presentations
were outstanding! It helped everyone see their possibilities and gave all the determination to
succeed. Our entire staff came back to work refreshed, motivated, and with easily applied and
long lasting lessons for the future. I couldn’t be happier. The entire department is working toward
achieving our second quarter goals so we can work with you again on a “rowing” team-building
event.
Judith O’Flynn Kayser
Ritz Carlton
I thought it was not only a great experience, but a valuable lesson in true team participation. It was
very obvious that all oars needed to be in the water a the same time in order for the boat to go
smoothly forward. Any variation would cause the boat to do strange things. The same thing is true
with a business team. Failure to execute results in a lost sale, an unhappy client and a loss of
revenue. It was the most appropriate team training exercise t that I have ever been through.
