3. Developing leadership - some top tips for
Trustees
1. Be clear about your values and the behaviours they imply for the
conduct of your Board
2. As a member of the Board collectively, and as Chair in particular,
provide role models of leadership consistent with your values
3. Include a final item of reflection at each Board meeting and build
continuous improvement from this
4. Demonstrate leadership through regular board reviews, Trustee
appraisals including the Chair, engaging with senior managers in doing
this
5. Adopt the Good Governance Code as your framework for the reviews
6. Prioritise the development of a strong relationship of constructive
challenge between the Chair and Chief Executive
7. Ensure that funding for leadership development is a priority in any
allocation of resources to staff development eg skills development in
coaching and mentoring with a requirement for all managers to mentor
and use coaching as part of line management
8. Refresh the approach to induction of new Trustees and include
mentoring
9. Review emerging as well as known risks and develop your risk appetite
10. Look after yourself and your own resilience
