Introduction To Business Architecture – Part 1Alan McSweeney
This is the first of a proposed four part introduction to Business Architecture. It is intended to focus on activities associated with Business Architecture work and engagements.
Business change without a target business architecture and a plan is likely to result in a lack of success and even failure. An effective approach to business architecture and business architecture competency is required to address effectively the pressures on businesses to change. Business architecture connects business strategy to effective implementation and operation:
• Translates business strategic aims to implementations
• Defines the consequences and impacts of strategy
• Isolates focussed business outcomes
• Identifies the changes and deliverables that achieve business success
Enterprise Architecture without Solution Architecture and Business Architecture will not deliver on its potential. Business Architecture is an essential part of the continuum from theory to practice.

This describes the concept of a Process Oriented Architecture. A Process Oriented Architecture is a way of linking process areas to actual (desired) interactions – customer (external interacting party) service journeys through the organisation. It allows two views of any process to be maintained and operated:
1. External view – that experienced by user
2. Internal view – that worked on by the organisational competency
An organisation will interact will multiple external parties. Each external party will have a number of interaction paths or journeys. These journeys are the routes of experience of external parties. These routes of experience need to be mapped (as) seamlessly (as possible) to internal organisational operational process competency groupings.
The interaction paths or journeys represent the Straight Through Processing that the customer (external party) wants to experience. The complexity of internal organisational operational process competency groupings needs to be masked from the customer (external party). Process Oriented Architecture is a key enabler of successful digital transformation.

Principal Solution Architect
Teradata Corporation
ROLES &
ENGAGEMENTS
Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore July 2014 – current)
Roy is full-time seconded from Teradata into the bank’s Group Architecture
team based in Singapore.
Responsibilities include defining, documenting and monitoring the adoption
of a multi-platform, multi-technology Enterprise Data Management
architecture. The objective is to retire existing data warehouses, data marts
and point-to-point data transfers and implement a Data Lake (Hadoop) and
Data Warehouse (Teradata). Roy represents the bank’s architecture team
on key review and program management boards.
Major initiatives include:
• Defining utilities and standard patterns to enable data migration from
legacy platforms and processing on the target platforms
• Selecting technologies and toolsets to enable rapid progress while
moving the bank to the new target architecture
• Project and design reviews, including the tracking of technical debt
created by tactical implementations to meet regulator and market
deadlines
• Monitoring major projects to ensure they are exploiting the new data
management architecture and components as required.
TeleSonera (Sweden January - June 2014)
Roy was asked to work for the BI Operations manager to operationalize the
Data Warehouse. This full-time, 6 month assignment was complicated by
outsourcer and client politics and was more of a consulting and program
management than a technical assignment.
Major responsibilities included:
• Defining roles and ownership for deployment management,
operational acceptance, performance, capacity and impact
predictions, etc
• Defining metrics to monitor the health of the production environment
• Developing and rolling out tools for project design quality assurance,
capacity and performance predictions, etc
• Developing, delivering and recording technical training for
TeleSonera’s system integrator and IT operations providers.
Maersk Shipping (Denmark October 2011 – Dec 2013)
Roy was full time seconded into Maersk’s BI Organisation as lead
Architect. The challenging role included monitoring architecture and design
compliance, developing and implementing standard design patterns, data
modeling QA, capacity forecasting, operational performance and capacity
monitoring, and technical inputs into database and query performance
issue resolution.
Major initiatives included:
• Managing Teradata database version upgrades
• Adoption of Informatica Power Centre for Extract, Load and
Transform processing (ELT)
March 2015 page 3
4. Roy Elgar
Principal Solution Architect
Teradata Corporation
• Introducing formalized capacity forecasting based on existing and
new workloads (ie projects)
• Retro-fitting standard design patterns to optimize performance and
support
• Introducing and using system, workload, and query-specific metrics
to measure the health of the operational system, identify poorly
performing workloads and change impacts.
Industrial Commercial Bank of China (China 2007-2011)
Roy was the lead Teradata Architect supporting the ongoing development
and enhancement of the bank’s Petabyte Teradata investment. The role
included:
• project reviews and mentoring
• An Architecture Renewal and Maturity Assessment
• Introducing new architecture, design and development practices
and methods to optimize the effectiveness and return on investment
for the bank
• Account planning and Teradata-internal strategy definition.
Land Transport Authority (Singapore 2009 – 2010)
This government organization uses Teradata for route planning, capacity
and throughput planning, ticketing and route profitability management. The
development, implementation and operation of Teradata is outsourced to
an India SI. Roy’s role was periodic design and implementation Quality
Assurance Reviews, introducing the customer and the SI to new Teradata
capabilities, coaching the SI technical team in design and modeling.
Korea Telecom (South Korea - 2 episodes: the first as an IBMer and
then for Teradata. 2003 – 2011)
Architecture definition and design monitoring/mentoring. The role included
reporting to the Project Steering Committee as well as mentoring and
coaching the customer and SI design and development teams. The key
challenge in this assignment is aligning business and IT expectations,
requirements and success criteria – the client IT department has little
experience in business-lead architecture and design. Mapping of business
requirements to the Teradata cLDM data model, mapping of the
customized model to source systems, and translating business needs into
technical requirements (throughput, capacity, resilience, systems
management) requires strong leadership – Roy’s role and responsibility.
State Bank of India (2008 – 2009)
Roy lead the Information Discovery, Technical Architecture Design, RFP &
Benchmark Definition and implementation planning phases at this
challenging customer in Mumbai and Delhi. The Teradata team of 12 was
on-site for 6 months – Roy was living in India at the time and was on-site
67% of the time whilst supporting other initiatives and projects in India.
Daewoo GM (South Korea 2010)

5. Roy Elgar
Principal Solution Architect
Teradata Corporation
Coaching and mentoring of the local Teradata team as they defined the
architecture, data capture and data integration approach from Oracle OLTP
systems. Roy simplified the proposed architecture and data integration
approach as the real requirements became apparent: minimizing data
staging and duplication. The project delivered a fully functional CRM
solution to support the launch of a new model series in Korea – delivering
the CRM system on time was a major success for the client IT department.
Standard Chartered First Bank (South Korea)
Roy lead the Teradata Technical team through 2009, before other work
pressures meant he had to hand over the role.
The client is an existing Teradata customer with an IT focused approach to
project definition and delivery. The existing Data Warehouse was not
delivering direct business advantage or functionality, the requirements
were not reflected in the logical data model, and the physical data model
was source based rather than a technically optimized version of the logical
model.
Roy lead a new project and introduced Teradata Best Practice approaches,
methods and architecture to the client – with business unit support but
against existing IT culture and practice. The technical architecture
definition and linkage of requirements to LDM, LDM to source (rather than
source to LDM), PDM to LDM and source and hence the architecture and
mechanisms of data capture, data integration and information delivery have
been accepted by the customer, and implementation phase 2 is underway.
Telkomsel (Indonesia) and Smart (Philippines)
Roy mentored local Teradata teams through Proofs of Concept, liaising
between the projects and the business, ensuring scope and success
criteria were understood and acknowledged. After the successful POC’s
Roy played a “trusted advisor” role at both customers (both have 100’s of
GB of Teradata) at the Project Manager and Architecture levels. Both
customers re-affirmed their belief in Teradata’s value with substantial
upgrades.
Axa SunLife (England)
The Special Projects group required support to bring together the disparate
architectures, technologies and methods used to deliver MIS and BI around
the world – a pre-requisite for rolling out a standard set of reporting
applications, dashboards and KPIs. Roy hosted an Architecture Workshop
for the lead (customer) architect from each of the territories at IBM’s
International Education Centre in Belgium, and facilitated the sessions. He
was asked to use the outputs from the workshop to define a Global
Roadmap, and ended up building a road-mapping tool that IBM refined into
a formal tool.
Bank of Scotland (Scotland)
Roy was asked to assist the customer project manager in the planning,
preparation and execution of merging 2 IBM and 1 Teradata Data
Warehouse into a single DW Environment. The role was 2 weeks a month

for 5 months: mapping data coverage, functionality and technologies
across the 3 platforms, defining an optimal architecture and recognizing all
the technical and process changes needed to support the consolidation.
Lucas Aftermarket Operations (England)
The customer needed to bring together data from legacy and new ERP
systems to support product portfolio and warehouse logistics management
across Europe. Roy lead the logical modeling, physical modeling and data
integration design for the customer, and was then retained as a (part time)
mentor and advisor.
