Experience Summary
I have over twenty five years of business and technical consulting experience focused primarily on managing
large volumes of data. The majority of my experience has been with Oracle technologies, however, I am also
familiar with Hadoop and NoSQL products. I specialise in enhancing productivity, performance and value
through my extensive experience, versatility and value driven approach.
I have successfully applied a combination of architecture, analysis, consulting, technology, design and
implementation skills for blue-chip European and US based clients including Walgreens Boots Alliance, E.On
(formerly Powergen), Millward Brown (part of WPP), Vodafone, MBNA, Halifax Building Society, Croner
Publications, Chemical Bank and NCM Credit Insurance.
Selected Project Experience:
WalgreensBoots Alliance – April, 2018 – Present [CONTRACT]
I have recently joined the Analytics team at WBA to assist with architecture and data engineering services,
using Oracle 12c and Wherescape ELT tooling to deliver agile delivery of a combined data lake and data
warehousing environment on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
E.On (formerly Powergen) – October, 2001 – April 2018 [CONTRACT]
I have undertaken a number of roles for Powergen (as was) and then E.On who acquired Powergen, covering
architecture, design, development, database administration, project and team management, tuning and
education, working with individuals right up to Director level.
I was originally engaged by Powergen to deliver a Data Warehouse and once funding was secured, I was at
the heart of the team that delivered the first ever Data Warehouse for Powergen, on time, in budget and
meeting success criteria whilst in the process saving tens of millions of pounds to the business annually.
Over successive years I played a pivotal role in the small team that has developed and extended the Data
Warehouse to provide a platform that services a million queries a month for over 1500 users on a clustered (3
node RAC) Oracle relational platform holding 85TB+ of content. I have architected and implemented several
upgrades of the hardware and software platforms to ensure continued delivery to service levels whilst
continuously enhancing functionality for the user community.
Due to the success of the UK platform, several other regional units within E.On sought advice from the UK
team which led to knowledge sharing exercises to allow them to develop their own platforms. I later
architected and led the team that implemented the platform to support the Business Intelligence requirements
of the German Sales business, which was based on the conceptual and data architecture of the UK platform
and which was implemented with an agile approach in under 6 months to meet all success criteria.
Latterly I have taken on the role of Lead Technical Architect as E.On look to plan the platform for the next five
years, with technologies such as Cloud, Hadoop and Data Vault 2.0 being considered. I have been working
closely with E.On representatives in Germany on their Hadoop platform running in Microsoft Azure cloud,
offering the benefit of our considerable experience of developing the UK Data Warehouse platform.
I am also attached to the Customer Contact Platform project where E.On are implementing the Genesys
Contact Centre software platform and a migration project moving an on premise Oracle 11gR2 based Data
Warehouse to Azure SQL Data Warehouse.

Millward Brown – January, 1997 – August 2001 [CONTRACT]
I undertook Lead Architect and Lead Developer roles in helping Millward Brown to develop a system to
manage the delivery of the UK Charts information to clients including BBC Radio. The Radio 1 Top 40 music
chart is just one deliverable from the system which is still running today.
I created the technical architecture for a Web fronted (Microsoft IIS Web server, Oracle Web Application
Server 3), hybrid Data Mart / Operational system (Oracle 8i on VMS). The system takes daily feeds from over
5000 retail outlets throughout the UK to pull together a multiple terabyte, multi billion row, replicated database.
As Lead Technical Architect for the Oracle 8i Release 3 based database, I was responsible for:
Analysis – From the outset of the project, I was involved in the analysis phase to determine the business
requirements which led to the functional hierarchy and logical model supporting them. I was also involved in
assessing legacy systems to determine which components needed to be redesigned and which reused.
Design – I designed the physical database design and database topology whilst also choosing the software
platform (8i R3) and assisting in the specification of the hardware platform. I designed a hybrid operational /
Data Mart database which worked effectively and is still in daily operational use.
Education – The system was significantly larger than any developed previously within Millward Brown which
required that I not only lead the team but also educate them along the way in terms of design.
Development – I assisted in developing the supporting framework for the ETL processing for the database
including the auditing and DDL management routines together with the appropriate standards for the ETL
development team to follow in designing the handcrafted SQL & PL/SQL mapping processes. I also
developed a significant number of mappings during the development phase.
Implementation – During the implementation, I supported the Test teams together with internal and external
users of the system.
Support – I performed a significant amount of tuning at both the database and application (mappings) levels
whilst also assisting in various benchmarking exercises.
Oracle UK – November 1994 to December 1996 [PERMANENTLY EMPLOYED]
I was a key member of the Finance Consulting Practice within Oracle Consulting Services. I worked for a
number of clients on a mixture of consulting, DBA, development and design engagements.
My main engagements included:
Conversion of a series of Pro*C programs from Ingres to Oracle for Vodafone
Developed the Year End Card Summary statement production facility for MBNA
Team leader of 6 developers on a major consultancy engagement for NCM Credit Insurance over a
15 month period. I acted as a design authority to the client data management team and acted as a
consultant on tuning issues to the DBA team who were new to using Oracle on a mainframe platform
Implementation of backup and recovery strategies for a series of risk management projects at
Chemical Bank
Implementation of an Oracle Designer based data modelling approach at Halifax Building Society
Team leader of three developers on an Oracle Forms 3 upgrade project for Croner Publications
Fraser WilliamsLtd – June 1993 to November 1994 [PERMANENTLY EMPLOYED]
I undertook a multifaceted role involving DBA, design and development on a range of Oracle 5, 6 and 7 based
systems for numerous clients.
