Rotenone is a naturally occurring insecticide and piscicide derived from the roots and stems of several plant species. It is an isoflavonoid compound with the empirical formula C23H22O6. Rotenone has various agricultural and pharmaceutical uses including as a pesticide for potato beetles and other insect pests, and to kill invasive fish species. It decomposes readily in sunlight and is toxic to fish and other aquatic life at low doses, but has relatively low toxicity to humans. Prolonged exposure may potentially cause neurological effects however. Common formulations include powdered extracts in dusts or solutions for spraying.

commercially powdered roots is finely
ground and diluted with a suitable
carrier (talc, clay) to a concentration of
1%. Coated dusts, made by mixing the
carrier with a liquid extract of the root
and then drying, yield particles more
uniform in size than are in the
powdered root.

however, a non-aqueous extract using
ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene,
or chlorbenzene is preferable

5. PROPERTIES OF ROTENONE
.
It is naturally occuring in nature and is
biodegradable.
It decomposes in the presence of
sunlight and warm weather and slowly
loses its toxicity. Hence its amount in
atmosphere is limited.
It is an excellent piscicide with low
LD50 values for many invasive fish
species
Rotenone is sparingly soluble in water
but is readily soluble in many organic
solvents and oils

6. In water bodies and fisheries ,
rotenone is used to kill invasive
pest fish such as carp and
rainbow trout.
In agriculture rotenone is used to kill
potato beetles, cucumber beetles,
flea beetles, cabbage worms,
raspberry beetles, nds most other
arthropod pests.
Rotenone is also used to treat
scabies and head lice on humans as
well as various ectoparasites on
livestock and pet animals.

7. HAZARDOUS NATURE OF ROTENONE
Classified as non-carcinogen
Light Environment hazard
Slightly toxic
Rotenone is easily combustible and and catches fire
easily on heating.
Given sufficient exposure, rotenone may cause
specific damage to nerve cells causing signs of
neurotoxicity similar to Parkinson’s disease
In a fatal poisoning case, the estimated oral dose
was 50 mg/kg, and the symptoms were coma and
respiratory arrest within 8.5 hours of ingestion

Inhalation of high doses can cause
increased respiration followed by
depression and convulsions. The
compound can cause a mild rash in
humans
Since rotenone is used as a fish toxin
(piscicide), it follows that it is highly
toxic to fish especially rainbow trout,
channel catfish and bluegill.
Oral consumption of rotenone is
associated with a LDLo value of 143
mg/kg in humans which causes
gastrointestinal changes and induction
of vomitting and diarhoea.
