Dioxane is a colorless liquid ether used as a solvent and stabilizer for transporting chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is miscible in water but resistant to biodegradation and can leach into groundwater. Dioxane exposure through inhalation or skin contact may cause eye, respiratory, and central nervous system irritation and damage organs like the liver and kidneys. While low in toxicity to aquatic life, dioxane presents environmental hazards when it contaminates groundwater supplies.
