Rome is the capital city of Italy known as the Eternal City, with a population of over 2.7 million people. Some of Rome's most famous landmarks include the Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built; the Pantheon, a circular temple dedicated to all gods; and the Trevi Fountain, the largest and most famous Baroque fountain. Other notable sites are the Roman Forum, the historic center of Roman political and social life; St. Peter's Basilica, located above St. Peter's tomb; and the Sistine Chapel, famous for its Michelangelo frescoes. The Vatican City, home to the Pope, is its own independent state located within Rome.
