5. RomeThese are some places in Rome that are awesome to visit. Some of them are buildings or incredible
monuments like the Colosseum or the Fontana di Trevi.

6. The Catacombs in Rome
The Catacombs in Rome are ancient burial places. Christians used it in the 2nd century AD to bury
their dead and hide, because they were persecuted. They're very important for the art history
because they contain frescoes and sculptures and
because you can find a lot of saints' remains in
mausoleums.
The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian are one of the
smallest and least preserved. They're very important,
because people can see the crypt of Saint Sebastian
and a bust, attributed to Bernini. There's a few more rooms, with different examples of art and
graffitis or paintings. Some of them were used for funeral banquets, others were mausoleums and
had inscriptions in Latin or Greek.
Saint Sebastian
This painting is called Saint Sebastian, and it was painted by Giovanni Bazzi in the 1576. It's
located in Galleria degli Uffizi, in Florence, Italy. It measures 145cm high and 204cm wide.
The painting is made of oil on canvas. In the middle
of the picture appears Saint Sebastian, tied on a tree
and with arrows pinned on his body. At the top of the
picture there's an angel who comes to help and adore
the martyr.
It's not a very realistic picture, although, its elements
give a sensation of movement and it makes the picture
look more realistic. There's a lot of contrast between
the darkness of the background and the light of the
front. That's called chiaroscuro.
It was painted in a very religious time, so it's normal
that its thematic is religious too. Probably, it tells a story about the Bible and the Saints, for its
thematic and the angel, for example.

7. The Colosseum
The Colosseum is the biggest amphitheatre in the world and is considered one of the greatest works
of Roman architecture and engineering. Is also named as
one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and it was listed
as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980. It's
situated just east of the Roman Forum. The construction
of the Colosseum took ten years, starting in the year 70
and finishing in the 80. It was ordered by the emperor
Vespasian, and was finished during the reign of Titus,
both from the Flavian dynasty.
In the Roman Era, it was used mainly for celebrations and events, such as gladiators battles, public
spectacles and animal hunts. Throughout the history, it has suffered some accidents that have
damaged it. For example, in the medieval era, it suffered an earthquake, causing the outer south side
to fall. A lot of people have tried to turn it into many different things, like churches, industries and
even cemeteries.
The perimeter originally measured 545m. The central arena is an oval 87m long and 55m wide,
surrounded by a wall 5m high. The Colosseum could accommodate around 50,000 people.
Emperors usually organized these bloody fights to gain popularity.

9. Fontana di Trevi
It's a fountain located in Rome. It was built by Nicola Savi and Pietro Bracci in 1732-
1762. It's tittle is Fontana di Trevi. It
stands 26.3m high and 49.15m wide, so
it's the largest baroque fountain in Rome.
It's has sculptures of gods related to
water, as well as some mythological
creatures like Tritons taming hippocamps
and guiding Oceanus chariot. The theme
of the fountain is the Taming of the
waters. In the centre there's a triumphal arch.
It symbolizes a scene that took place when Romans tried to bring water from the river
Tiber to the city, located at 13km from the city. It also marks the terminal point of the
modern Acqua Vergine, the revived Acqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied
water to Ancient Rome.
It's one of the most visited attractions in Rome, the biggest fountain and one of the
most important baroque fountains in the world.

10. Piazza Navona and Piazza
di Spagna
Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in
1st century AD. Piazza Navona is a highly significant
example of Baroque Roman architecture and art.
There's some important buildings, like the Palazzo
Pamphili or the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, that means
“Fountain of the four rivers”, and it represents the river
Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate. There's also two
additional fountains, the Fontana del Moro and the
Fountain of Neptune.
During its history, the piazza has hosted theatrical events and other activities, for example, Ancient
Romans came there to watch the Roman games. Actually, a Christmas market is held in the piazza.
The Piazza di Spagna is one of the most important and famous squares of Rome. It has its name
from the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the Embassy
of Spain. It's located at the bottom of the Spanish
Steps. In the middle of the square is the famous
Fontana della Barcaccia, and there also some great
buildings as the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide,
Babington's tea room or the Column of the
Immaculate Conception. Nowadays, is one of the
most visited places of Rome. Not far from the square, you can find the Via Condotti, popular
because it's exclusive stores.

11. Pantheon
The Pantheon is a Roman monument and temple, devoted to all gods. The word Pantheon derives
from an ancient Greek adjective, meaning: “temple
consecrated to all gods". The Pantheon is one of the
best preserved Roman-buildings. It was built by
Marcus Agrippa during his third consulship in 27BC.
A fire destroyed the temple in the year 80AD, and
thirty years later, it was again destroyed by another
fire. The Romans rebuilt the temple under the
emperor Hadrian. Since the 7th century, the Pantheon
has been used as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs". The Forum is
located in Piaza de la Rotonda in Rome.

12. The Vatican CityThe Vatican is the smallest and least populous country in the world. It's located in Rome. The
Vatican City is ruled by the Pope Francis, that is also the most important person in Christianism.
The Vatican is the only country in the world with Latin as an offcial Language.
The most important tourist attractions are Saint Peter's square, the Vatican
Guards, the gardens, the Vatican museum and the Saint
Peter's Basilica, located in Saint Peter's square, were the
martir was crucified. The first impression you get when
you enter the Saint Peter's Basilica is that is huge and
glorious.
Inside the Basilica, there is the sculpture of La Pietà, by
MichelAngelo, that also designed the
Dome. In the museums, you can find a lot of kinds of
art, like frescoes, sculptures, graffiti and paintings by the most important artists like Da Vinci or
MichelAngelo. The altar in the basilica is attributed to the same artist of the Saint Sebastian's bust,
Bernini. It's from the Baroque. In the centre of the square there's an inscription saying: TU ES
PETRUS, that means “You're Peter”.

13. Siena
-Siena is a city in Tuscany and the capitol of the province of Siena. The historic centre of Siena has
been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The
Piazza del Campo has a shape similar to a shell. The
town square, houses the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre
del Mangia. The Palio di Siena is a traditional medieval
horse race around the Piazza del Campo twice each year,
on July 2 and August 16. The earliest known antecedents
of the race are medieval. The town's central piazza was
the site of public games.

14. Venice
-Venice is a very famous city located in the Adriatic Sea. It's famous for being a flooded city, and
one of the largest car-free cities in the world. The most
common transport is the Gondola, a little and expensive
boat that goes through the streets. The tallest building in
Vencie is the Saint Mark's campanili, located in the Saint
Mark's square, where you can have a (quite expensive)
coffee and buy some souvenirs like the masks of the
popular Carnival of Venice, jewels and even some
paintings. The central canal that goes through Venice ins
named Canal Grande. The Vaporetti are water buses that are used by a lot of people in Venice.
Murano is an island located on the northof Venice, well known for glass making.

15. Florence
-Florence is a city at the feat of the Apenine Mountains. Florence is a city famous for it's art and
famous artists like Dante, Da Vinci or Michel Angelo. Florence was one of the most important cities
in the Middle Ages and is considered the
birthplace of the Renaissance. In Florence,
museums close
on Mondays. The most popular building is
the Galleria Uffizi. In La Galleria de la
Academia,
there's the famous David, from Michel
Angelo. The Duomo is a cathedral, it's
entrance is free,
except for it's bell tower. The Dome was painted by Brunelleschi. The climate in Florence is quite
hard, with winters below 0ºC and summers up to 48ºC. The Palazzo Vecchio is a very important
building where you can visit secret walls and more.
