2.  Raja Rao was born in
8 November 1908 .
 He was an Indian
writer of English
language .
 He lived in France till
1993 ,returned to
India on the outbreak
of World war-1 in
1940 .
 His major novels are;
1) The Serpent and
The Rope (1960)
2) Kanthapura (1938)

4.  “Kanthapura” is the
story of a village in
South India.
 The people here
were mostly
poor,illiterate and
backward.
 The village was
casteridden with
different quarters in
it housing people of
different castes-the
highest caste being
Brahmins,the lowest
the Pariahs.

5.  Kanthapura is the first major Indian novel in
English by Raja Rao.
 This is the story of Indian village before the
independence.
 Gandhi is in the center in this novel.
 Gandhi was a political leader and there were
some follower of his ideas.

6.  Achakka narrates the whole story.
 She is an village woman and the story
revolves around in a village Kanthapura in
South India.
 In this village there are clear discrimination
between Brahman,Shudra,Pariah
 Rao depicts beautifully the participation of
the village in different festivals like;

 Sankara Jayanti
 Kartik Purnima

ghing,harvesting,arrests
,release all are watched
over by Kenchamma.
 People thinks that she
will continue to protect
them in wind,rain or in
any distress.

8.  The protagonist of the novel is a young
Brahmmin boy.
 Villagers called him as “The Young Gandhi”.
 He is the spiritual guide,friend and
philosopher of the people of Kanthapura.
 The author’s own self is projected in the
character of Moorthy.

9. Kanthapura itself become character
at the end of the novel it convert in
to Kashipura it show the end rebirth
of the culture.
Kanthapura has become a melting
point of nationalism.
Gandhi has been made a medium to
define India.
