R.K. Narayan's first novel Swami and Friends provides insight into life in pre-independence South India through the eyes of a 10-year old boy named Swami. Swami navigates the complex social dynamics of school where he tries to please both demanding peers and bossy adults. Two incidents change his life, and he loses his friendship with Rajam, the son of the police superintendent. Though Swami sincerely believes in their friendship, Rajam remains aloof and impersonal.
