Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist, philosopher, linguist and semiotician born in 1915 in Bayonne, France. He was raised by his mother, aunt and grandmother after his father died when he was an infant. Barthes moved with his family to Paris at age 11. He died in 1980. Barthes discovered that any narrative contains five codes: the code of actions, the code of enigmas/puzzles, connotations, widening cultural knowledge, and composed opposites.

1. Roland Barthes was born on the 12th of
November 1915. He was a French literary,
linguist, philosopher, linguist, semiotician
and theorist critic. He was raised by his
mother, aunty and grandmother in Bayonne
a city in, South-western France, after his
father died before he was one. When he was
eleven he moved with his family to Paris.
He died on the 26th or March 1980

2. He discovered the idea of the five codes that make
up any narrative:
The code of actions. Any action proposed has to be completed, in a
logical order or sequence. The result of these actions form the plot of
events within a text.
The code of enigmas or puzzles. The mystery to a character or
situation in a text that is difficult to understand.
The gathering of connotations that present an implication of
additional information to what is already portrayed, through a
logical order of thoughts and actions of a character.

3. Widening the audiences cultural knowledge, ideology and mortality.
Composed opposites or themes in a text, presenting something or
someone that is the complete opposite of something or someone else;
relating to the organization of the cultural code.
